DP has invited his ex wife for Christmas dinner and says I’m being petty

Me and DP are having a bit of an argument about Christmas and I’m starting to wonder if I’m being unreasonable here.

We’ve been together 3 years and live together. I have a DS13 and DD8 from my previous relationship and he has two DDs, 15 and 10, from his marriage. His girls are with us alternate weekends and some of the school holidays. They are coming to us Christmas Eve and staying until Boxing Day this year.

We’d agreed we would have everyone here for Christmas dinner. His brother and my sister were invited as well, so its already going to be quite a full house. I don’t mind that, I like having people round for Christmas and the kids all get on well enough. I am the one who does most of the organising though, sorting food, presents, making sure everyone has got what they need etc. DP will help if I ask him but he isn’t the sort to think ahead about things.

Anyway a few days ago he mentioned that his ex wife would be coming for Christmas dinner as well. I actually thought he was joking at first and said what do you mean coming for dinner? Apparently he’d invited her because she would otherwise be on her own.

For context she has recently split up with her boyfriend and doesn’t have much family nearby. I do feel sorry for her in that respect and I’m not saying she should have to sit on her own all day if there is another option. But DP had already invited her before even mentioning it to me. I had no idea he was planning this and we hadn’t discussed it at all.

He said he thought it was the right thing to do and the girls would be happy having both their parents there. Which they are, his eldest especially was really pleased when she found out. I haven’t said anything to them about it and wouldn’t want to spoil their Christmas or make them feel like they have to choose between us.

But I don’t really understand why he couldn’t have asked me first? It’s my home as well and I’m going to be doing most of the work on the day. I finish work late on Christmas Eve so there is already going to be a lot to get sorted in a short space of time. I know having one extra person isn’t the end of the world but it isn’t really about the food or having enough chairs. I just feel like he’s made a decision that affects all of us and told me afterwards as though it’s already settled.

When I said I wasn’t comfortable with it he got quite annoyed and said I was being petty and making something nice into an issue. He said it was for the children. I said that I wasn’t stopping his girls seeing their mum. They could see her earlier in the day or he could take them to see her, or she could come over for a bit. I just hadn’t agreed to having her here for the whole dinner.

He then said it would be awkward if she only came for an hour and that the girls wanted her there. I do get that. They are old enough to understand their parents aren’t together but obviously it would be nice for them to have a Christmas where everyone can be in the same room and get along. I am not trying to make things difficult for them.

I don’t think she has done anything wrong either. We are civil when we see each other but we aren’t friends and we don’t socialise together. She’s never been rude to me and I have no reason to think anything is going on between them. They were married for a long time and have children together so obviously they will always have a connection. I’m not asking him to cut her out of their lives.

It is just that he does sometimes agree to things with her or the girls and then tell me afterwards. Usually it’s small things and I let it go, but this feels different because Christmas dinner is happening in our house and I’m the one who will be getting everything ready. I feel like if I had invited my ex to spend the day with us without discussing it with him, DP would have something to say about that.

My sister thinks he should have asked me first but says now that the girls are excited I should probably just let it happen. My friend says she wouldn’t have her partner’s ex wife sitting at her Christmas table at all, but I think that’s a bit harsh when she’s recently split up and would be alone otherwise.

I haven’t told DP she can’t come. I just said I wasn’t happy that he had invited her without even asking me, and now he’s acting like I’ve got a problem with his ex when that’s not what I said.

AIBU to think he should have spoken to me before inviting her, or am I making too much of it and should just get on with Christmas?

You can come to mine if you want.

The idea of working away in my kitchen at Christmas while my dh and his ex were in another room having a lovely old time of it, waiting to be served…is not a pleasant one

Hi op he’s obviously putting his exs feelings before yours. You have every right to be upset any decent person would have discussed first. It’s not exactly your fault she’s single she might have a new fella by then will he also be invited. Seriously make your dp do more than his fair share of everything let him see how much effort goes into the day. Would you invite your ex to even things out? I wouldn’t blame you if you did. He’s being a prick he’s calling you petty because he knows he is in the wrong. He’s not considered your kids either there not with their dad but it’s ok for his kids to have mum present disrespectful of him.

I have actually got on alright with my ex and we are on good terms but I know for a fact DP wouldnt be happy if I invited him to Christmas dinner without asking first, he would have something to say about it.

I do agree DP hasnt really thought about how much work it is for me either, although I dont want to turn it into tit for tat and invite my ex just to make a point. I just want him to understand its our home and he cant make decisions like this for both of us then call me petty when I say something. If he’d asked me properly in the first place we probably wouldnt even be having this argument.

Wait until the ex gets a new boyfriend and wants to invite him as well ...

I dont have any bad feelings towards her at all, honestly. If he’d asked me first and explained the situation I probably would have been fine with it. It’s more that he’s just decided and told me afterwards, then when I’ve said I wasnt happy about not being asked he’s called me petty.

He's been extremely unreasonable

There's nothing you can do about it now

But you DO need to give him jobs to do to help from now until Christmas.

Do NOT do everything this year

CinnamonBuns67 · Yesterday 21:31

I wouldn't be happy either. I'd be telling him he'd be doing all the work. The cleaning, the shopping both gifts (apart from my own childrens) and food/drink, he'd be doing the wrapping, the food prep, the cooking, the serving and every other part of hosting and he'd be doing the clean up after.

I wonder if he invited her without really considering. I can be prone to that too. Out of kindness and realising after it might actually be a bit of a stretch. My husband can actually do it too come to think of it. I think it’s a nice trait to have - including people.

Do you call people affected by your impulsive invitations petty if they object?

Tinkalinkalink · Yesterday 21:29

He should have asked.

I dont think this makes him a conttolling abuser or that yorue a doormat
I think hes desperate to make his girls happy.
If shes not horrendous if you can welcome her, I think do

Restlessdreams1994 · Yesterday 21:25

He should have asked first. However it’s healthy for kids to see their parents getting along so I think it’s good that she’s coming.

Why are you doing all the work alone though?

Do you want to spend the rest of your life with this inconsiderate dick who thinks your feelings count for nothing?

His ex wife comes before you.

And after him. He is a thoughtless lazy user.

Escape from him while you can.

Shatteredallthetimelately · Yesterday 21:18

I'd be furious that he didn't ask me first, and more so that he feels i'm in the wrong, but it's done now so you can either say no and have him and his DC on your back or tell him fine but as with most families she can help him out as he'll be doing the brunt of Christmas dinner.

I'm blowed if i'd be stuck in the kitchen fixing food for my DP's ex while they're all playing happy families round the Christmas tree.

3luckystars · Yesterday 21:17

He is a total USER.

It’s probably why his marriage ended. He is a manipulative USER that calls names to get his lazy way.

Disgusting.

As allthingsinmoderation·
Says
"If you would have even reluctantly agreed given the current circumstances, let it happen."

And he needs to help with planning, shopping and cooking etc.

Minasama · Yesterday 21:15

He is bang out of order to have invited someone to your house without discussing it with you. Doubly so given this is Christmas, triply so given it’s his ex wife.

I do think he is doing the right thing by inviting her but you should have had a say in that, especially given you are the one who cooks.

Funnily enough, your feelings are important given it is your Christmas and your house too.

3luckystars · Yesterday 21:15

AnneLovesGilbert · Yesterday 20:04

I’d be taking my DC and going somewhere else for Christmas. Fuck being called petty by a pathetic loser who expects you to create a lovely Christmas for him, his kids and his ex wife because he can’t be arsed to bother doing any of it himself and didn’t have the courtesy to ask you first if she could come. Utterly pathetic and nasty, shows exactly where you sit in his priorities. Go along with this and you accept doormat status.

EXACTLY

CorkedWellbeing · Yesterday 21:14

You are not being unreasonable at all, but I don't think it needs to be an argument. It is nice for the kids, and it gives your kids an amazing example on how inclusive and kind blended families can be.
He should have asked you though, not like a permission thing as such (although it is a unique tricky balance with an ex) but just because it is your home and you'll likely be cooking and organising and it is a courteous thing to do.

Italiangreyhound · Yesterday 21:12

As *BriarTime suggests. *

sunshinestar1986 · Yesterday 21:12

I've recently realised that reasonable, logical and logical decent people are always taken advantage off.
Don't be reasonable, say no or leave the house!
Or how about you invite your kids dad eh
Be one big happy family haha, see how he likes it, say it even if it isnt true!

I get on really well with my husbands ex wife…over the past 20 years we have become very good friends…lots of mutual love and care and respect ….in fact myself and DH went to her wedding to her new DH last year ….and they would be more than welcome to come over for Xmas dinner….but….only if my DH ran it by me first….its basic manners…I won’t be “ told” who is coming, we will discuss it….

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · Yesterday 21:10

Tell him youve thought about it and you agree it would be nice for the kids so youve invited your ex as well so your own children can enjoy being with both parents too.

I agree with this, mainly because two kids will have both of their parents there and two will only have their mum. That seems very unfair to two children.

@IcyPortal I hope you can invite your ex so your children are not left out of the family Christmas.

Urgh, absolutely not.

I am very suspicious of men who behave like this with their ex wives. I have a civil relationship with my ex husband but no way on earth would I invite him to Christmas dinner especially if I had a partner attending! I do buy him a Christmas present off ds despite him not celebrating it.

The only 2 times I’ve dated single dads, they’ve behaved in this exact pisstaking manner (never again). Both went back to their ex-wives and one messages me off random numbers (blocked him on everything) trying his luck every few months.

Tell him bluntly he can celebrate Christmas at his with his daughters and ex wife.

Edited

Only suspicious of men doing it? What about women who invite their exes?
