Drinking wine in the park while children play?

jamimapuddlejump · 16/10/2026 13:45

I took my little one to the park yesterday afternoon and there was a mum and daughter sitting on a blanket with a picnic and a bottle of wine with 2 plastic glasses while the little ones were playing.
They were sitting chatting and watching the kids who were around primarily school age playing together.

I didn’t think a lot at the time but maybe thought it was a bit funny, would you think it was ok to crack open a bottle of wine in the play park?

I think they should serve it in soft play areas might create less dramas, amongst parents that is

Timeforachange26 · 16/10/2026 23:18

I don't see an issue tbh

Obviously you don't live near me as no one would've wanted to be in the park with or without a glass of wine the last couple of days

@BobbleBear

how exactly do you think it would affect the child. ?

I'm guessing the child would be delighted with a chilled out Mum!

I’m not judging, my first thought was there’s no toilet in this park and I know after the first glass I’d have to go and find a loo but maybe that’s just me.

"I'm not judging"...then why post in AIBU, come on at least have the courage of your convictions

I used to do this all the time in 90's, me and my friends lived in flats in London, no gardens, we would decamp to the park at weekend's, picnic, glass of wine for us, playground and paddling pool for the kids, honestly whats so wrong, no one got drunk.
EtA definitely toilets in park and a cafe..
London Parks are the best

Why can't people do anything without alcohol? Why couldn't they just drink Fanta in the park, or take a flask of tea or something?

EmeraldShamrock000 · Yesterday 00:20

I have never seen a parent drinking alcohol in a park while looking after children. I saw a few alcoholic people without children drinking in a public park, they’re usually homeless.

Because they fancied a nice glass of wine with their picnic. Presume you don't know these two women so it's quite odd to suggest they "can't do anything" without alcohol. If someone was drinking on the 8am train to Paddington or in the dentist surgery or in the back row at church I might wonder if they had a problem. A picnic is a completely normal occasion for a glass of wine

Carjuke · Yesterday 00:37

When my children were at primary school it was normal to go to a pub with a garden on a Friday and have a couple of drinks with other parents.Children playing together on the green and having fun. Not sure what the problem is TBH .

Do you personally know the women and know they can’t do anything without alcohol?

OonaStubbs · Yesterday 00:55

If they can't sit and watch their children play without resorting to alcohol it sets a fairly low bar. There's just no need for it.

It might be the only alcohol they’ve had all year for all anyone here knows. It could’ve even been non-alcoholic!

Girasoli · Yesterday 09:26

I've seen lots of people drink alcohol in the park...its popular for birthday parties in the summer. The adults sit by the big picnic with and prosecco/beer and the children play. I've not seen anyone get drunk though at a children's birthday party.

CarbootJunction · Yesterday 09:37

Many years ago, our childminder always had a glass of wine poured for when the last child of the day had been collected.
She had two of her own to care for, but no-one questioned her need for 'medication'.
Needs must.

Theres no “need” for a sandwich or a soft drink or an ice cream either. People are entitled to their little treats.

For a start, supervising kids on roads is likely to be , shall we say, observant. or on play equipment, for that matter.

Do you actually have any experience of drinking alcohol? You do know that one or maybe two glasses of wine is not going to turn most adults into a stumbling, slurring, barely conscious mess who can’t cross a road safely?

Ilovelurchers · Yesterday 10:07

As long as they were still sober enough to supervise the kids effectively, it's fine. I don't think it's necessarily bad to notice what other people are doing though. Because if they did seen incapable of caring properly for the kids (totally inebriated) - it would be right of OP to notice and take action.

And she is just asking for others' views. Which is the whole point of a parenting website, after all.

If it was men drinking cans of beer would people think it was ok?

Yes of course, why is it any different? I’ve also seen women drinking cans of beer in the park.

If you have ever been to a city centre, a pub or a public transport hub, you will surely have observed that mothers with young children are generally rather less of a threat to other people and public order than groups of men on the beer.

Tbf men have higher body weight in general than women and beer has a lower alcohol content. The amount of alcohol in one can of beer is significantly lower than that in half a bottle of wine (not that she saw them drink the entire thing, and not that we actually know the alcohol content, if any, of the bottle in question). But you’re right people would probably judge that more harshly. Life’s not fair is it? You can’t even have a glass of schloer with your friend without the internet jumping to conclusions.

I thought we’re talking about parents drinking in a park. So two men sitting on a picnic blanket with a beer each, while the kids run around kicking a ball? Doesn’t sound very threatening to me. But then where I grew up, I experienced a much higher threat from the women in pubs than the men.

Yes, and I do think that up to half a bottle of wine, or even two glasses (of indeterminate size) for a lot of people, is too much in that situation. I mean, it’s illegal to drive on that amount . Think it through.

If half a bottle doesn’t affect you adversely, then you may have a bigger problem.

Isnt half a bottle 2 glasses? If so then only the most lightweights would be shitfaced on that especially drank slowly with food
