Drinking wine in the park while children play?

jamimapuddlejump · 16/10/2026 13:45

I took my little one to the park yesterday afternoon and there was a mum and daughter sitting on a blanket with a picnic and a bottle of wine with 2 plastic glasses while the little ones were playing.
They were sitting chatting and watching the kids who were around primarily school age playing together.

I didn’t think a lot at the time but maybe thought it was a bit funny, would you think it was ok to crack open a bottle of wine in the play park?

I don't feel they are doing anything wrong necessarily. A nice day, a one off perhaps? Like with anything if they can't get through the day without it, there's the problem. People who drink and have kids will be doing this around them at some point and this is not necessarily a bad thing. Everything in moderation and all that.

HedgerowD · 16/10/2026 15:53

Sounds like a really lovely afternoon to me. I don't drink too often now but I do enjoy a glass of wine.

InterestedDad37 · 16/10/2026 15:52

Sitting on a picnic blanket having a 'naice' glass of prosecco? No probs.
Sprawling on a park bench covered in vomit and singing "Dirty Old Town"? Probably not 🤣

The playmobil playground set had a park bench and a nice green bottle of whatever for the parents... just saying!

Get them early, that's what I say !! 😁

And very soon those children will be drinking in the park because they have grown to believe it is normal behaviour.
Hopefully none of the children in their care ever have an accident when Mummy & Granny are boozing in the park or go missing. Can you imagine the paramedics or police turning up and you reek of booze?

My parents never drunk in the park and I never did.

I did however regularly have several cans of cider/beer around the back of the community hall before going to the "youth club disco" though, however I'm sure my mother never drank her Harveys Bristol Cream there.

mumumental · 16/10/2026 15:47

No it’s not reasonable, FFS. Drinking half a bottle of wine when out with children isn’t safe.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 16/10/2026 15:45

Friday after school loads of the parents meet at the park and drink some beers or wine while the kids play! It’s very social and we did it loads over the summer 🤷‍♀️

EscCtrl · 16/10/2026 15:44

Usually fine. Though some local councils misuse PSPOs to classify all drinking of alcohol as anti-social behaviour. Perhaps councilors think people can't be trusted to drink responsibly without the imposition of the nanny state? Or is it partial Sharia law?

I mean I can’t believe anyone would drink Tennents Super for pleasure and the alcohol content is nearly the same as some wines… I have never known anyone drink it who didn’t have a problematic relationship with alcohol.

But yeah I do accept your point.

Having an ice cream in the park is unnecessary. Talking to your friend rather than both sitting in silence is unnecessary. Wearing a pretty dress and a colourful hair clip instead of a black sack and black hairtie is unnecessary.

People sometimes do things for enjoyment. Even, shockingly, on a sunny day at the park.

Well this is just it…women especially mothers should not do things just for the fun of it. It’s being unseemly. They are here to serve men and kids, not to enjoy themselves.

I get what you’re saying but drinking alcohol during what’s essentially a child’s activity really isn’t necessary. There’s many a time and place to enjoy an alcoholic beverage and I personally believe that a children’s play-park isn’t one of them.

Where does OP say they were drinking in a "children's play park"? I read it as a park. The sort of place adults go for a picnic, people walk their dogs, kids play.

There's only so much hours of daylight and free time in the day though. If you can combine catching up with your mum over a glass of wine with your children having a play, isn't that better than - for example - leaving them with a babysitter to go meet your mum in the pub for the same amount of time?
I don't think that just because children are present it has to be a wholly "child's activity". As someone without young kids I would find my friends very boring if they only wanted to do child focused things while seeing me and I was expected to watch their kids play. That isn't fun for me. Makes total sense for both the kids and the adults to be having fun at the same time.

I’m not judging, my first thought was there’s no toilet in this park and I know after the first glass I’d have to go and find a loo but maybe that’s just me.

@jamimapuddlejump Be honest, would you have started a thread if they had both been drinking a can of Tango...? That has the same effect on toilet requirements.

Come off it, OP Grin

Your first thought was unlikely to be about the provision of public loos, but the thread didn't start off the way you hoped, with a ton of appalled posters.

Maybe they hadn't seen each other for ages and it was someone's birthday? Maybe they just fancied it? When I meet my mum and siblings in the summer, it's often on a blanket, with a fabulous picnic and bottle of something chilled.

Don't pretend your OP wasn't judging, we're not daft.

FKAT · 16/10/2026 15:36

Where I am many kids summer birthday parties are a picnic in the park with alcohol for the adults. My kids are too old for this now (they are the ones getting drunk in the park...) but some of my happiest mummy memories are sitting in the sunshine watching kids play while chatting and having a beer.

Come on, don't pretend you're worried about their bladder health.

What you've described doesn't sound worrying. I'd probably notice it because it would be a bit out of the ordinary in my local park, but I'd think it looked like a nice set up.

Thepeopleversuswork · 16/10/2026 15:34

Pallisers · 16/10/2026 15:24

Well, fair cop on the Tennents vs wine but my point was there's nothing to suggest they were getting hammered. There's a big difference between having a couple of drinks socially and getting drunk.

But your post said what I think a lot of posters would think themselves. Two young mothers in trackies on a park bench having a tennents while their kids play - those poor kids. Two middle class women having a picnic and a bottle of wine while their kids play - how lovely. What is actually happening is exactly the same thing.

I mean I can’t believe anyone would drink Tennents Super for pleasure and the alcohol content is nearly the same as some wines… I have never known anyone drink it who didn’t have a problematic relationship with alcohol.

But yeah I do accept your point.

"I'm not judging"

Of course you were. It's different strokes for different folks though. I've got no issue with wine in the park but I did inwardly roll my eyes at a colleague the other day who couldn't operate an ipad because her fake nails were too long.
It's up to her of course. Maybe she doesn't mind not having functioning fingers.

Spain would blow your mind, loads of parks here have a bar or are right next to one. Parents eat and drink (yes, alcohol) while the kids play in the park.

This.

we were in Berlin recently and found a lovely wine shop where in addition to buying to take home you paid an extra € for each glass (a bit like corkage I guess just take glass back when done) and were encouraged to make use of the lovely ladies benched and tables in a park overlooking a playground and stay and have a drink.

There were actually several other cafes and restaurants using the same area and no one was intoxicated and where applicable kids were also being supervised.

We were with DD 18 who had her nose stuck in a book so she didn’t use the playground but did say the zip wire looked awesome and she wished she could have a go.

There is a surprising number of people who can’t seem to do anything that doesn’t involve guzzling alcohol.

you're doing a disservice to the multi-taskers - guzzling alcohol into their cocaine stream

I guess I just don’t understand why someone would take their children to a play park and decide to drink alcohol at the same time. It’s not something I’d ever do and (besides the two women I mentioned) I’ve never witnessed it locally. I personally find it unusual and unnecessary but again, each to their own.
