Drinking wine in the park while children play?

jamimapuddlejump · 16/10/2026 13:45

I took my little one to the park yesterday afternoon and there was a mum and daughter sitting on a blanket with a picnic and a bottle of wine with 2 plastic glasses while the little ones were playing.
They were sitting chatting and watching the kids who were around primarily school age playing together.

I didn’t think a lot at the time but maybe thought it was a bit funny, would you think it was ok to crack open a bottle of wine in the play park?

It's a picnic - maybe they are celebrating something

Somersetbaker · 16/10/2026 16:47

Not allowed in any of the parks near me. Public Space Protection Orders in place, likewise the town centres. If you're caught and are lucky you'll be made to pour it down a drain, if you're not lucky you'll be arrested. In the eyes of the law there is no difference between Special Brew and a naice prosecco.

Can you still buy Tennents Super 🤔? Only tried it twice. First time, I blacked out at an event at a school where my friends were the live band. After the event I was apparently in an animated political conversation with a teacher for half an hour, then attempted to steal the school's electronic keyboard. Managed to get it to the car-park but it was confiscated as I was climbing into a taxi. Second time (shortly after), I smashed a shop window on the way home and we were all arrested. Had to personally apologise to the shopkeeper and pay £200 to replace it (quite a lot of money at the time). At least I was under 20. Having an uneventful day, so might pop to the corner shop in a minute... 🤨

😆

Flipped from unexpected junior political activist to budding musical criminal - sounds like you opened a second can !

It used to be on tap in one of the local flat-roofed pubs where I grew up, but "watered-down" to just under 7%

mugs of neat gin AND at midday??

Jesus Christ

All that's missing there is an eye-patch, peg-leg and a shoulder parrot

and/or ankle tag

Edited

Pirates drink rum not gin!! (Notoriously lol)

This is pure class. How did you think you were going to steal a keyboard from a school?

I thought I'd had a wild youth but I can't hold a candle to that. I did once pass out on a toilet floor after a substantial amount of Red Label Thunderbird and had to talk the landlord out of calling an ambulance.

Let's just say I'm very glad Gen Alpha doesn't have a taste for booze...

No it’s not reasonable, FFS. Drinking half a bottle of wine when out with children isn’t safe.

Can you tell us your source for this. Or better still show us the detailed research that proves it.

I barely even drink these days but I think this is ridiculous.

Small amount of wine with food in a park, what exactly are you worried is going to happen? If they were chugging Tennents Super you might have a point.

Unclench.

It’s much more common than you would imagine. There is a whole demographic of parents who drink alcohol while doing even the most mundane tasks with their children. I used to be one of them (I don’t drink anymore) and I know lots of them. I used to take wine to the park all the time. I was once there and bumped into a mum I knew from nursery who was with another mum who lived next door to the park. This other mum was like, who wants a gin?! It was about noon on a Tuesday. Off she trotted to her house and returned with 3 mugs of neat gin! 😳

Back in the day, school sports afternoons, in the local park, always involved a group of mums, a picnic, and a couple of glasses of wine. 🙈

LancashireButterPie · 16/10/2026 16:26

Sounds good to me!! But then I used to take my kids to a mums and tots group in a little Cheshire village hall on Friday afternoons and there'd be prosecco and nice nibbles laid out.
Lots of fun and laughter and the kids had a blast too.

ElixirMaker · 16/10/2026 13:56

Is this different to drinking some wine at home in the garden whilst the children play?

Im guilty of this and I hardly even drink. Maybe if OP saw me she would assume I was an alcoholic.

That's the thing about assuming!

jamimapuddlejump · 16/10/2026 13:57

I’m not judging, my first thought was there’s no toilet in this park and I know after the first glass I’d have to go and find a loo but maybe that’s just me.

That wasn’t what you meant though, was it? You were definitely judging.

Tattletail · 16/10/2026 16:23

I cracked open a beer with our friends at the playground/park recently while the kids played together. We was all fine, not drunk, just enjoying a catch up, some autumn sun and letting the kids run around.

It's a shame playgrounds don't have gin bars for the adults... As per Jen Bristers brilliant stand up piece 😂

I tried 2 of those exactly once, between age 17-19

The first time I was sober and thought the Super Strength would make for a refreshing beverage on a summer's day after sports - 3 cans got tipped / unblocked the town's entire sewer network

They have a taste of lager mixed with spent nuclear fuel

Completely get you on the nuclear fuel. Don't get me wrong, I've tried most if not all of these in my 20s.

But I stand by the idea that most people who drink them over the age of about 25 are pissheads/street drinkers. If you're drinking something like this around your kids you're definitely in problem territory.

BustyLaRoux · 16/10/2026 15:55

Oh purrrrleaase….. you absolutely were judging! “I was just concerned they might need the loo!” Give over. That’s not what you said. You came home and posted on MN about it and asked if other people thought this was acceptable.

This was my thought too. Then when the OP didn't get the onslaught of outrage they were anticipating it suddenly switched to concern in case they needed to pee!

Thunderbird red
White Ice
Crucial Brew (is that still a thing?)

etc

Maybe I am being a snob. But most people who buy these drinks aren’t buying them for the taste.

Growlybear83 · 16/10/2026 15:59

Whatever was wrong with what they were doing? Presumably two people weren’t going to get falling over drunk sharing a bottle of wine?! 🤣

@mumumental

a bottle of wine is not a large amount . No one is staggering about puking and pissing themselves after half a bottle of wine

seahorsessky · 16/10/2026 15:56

It's banned in all of ours. If you're in England, I'm surprised if yours doesn't have signs up. Mind you, ours are too cold to picnic now IMO.
Of course, it could be non-alcoholic wine they had!

Tipples for the discerning 'connoisseur'

Kestrel Super Strength
Carlsberg Special Brew
Gold Label No. 1 Barley Wine

If you buy a 4-pack, they come with heavy-duty gardening gloves

Thunderbird red
White Ice
Crucial Brew (is that still a thing?)

etc

Maybe I am being a snob. But most people who buy these drinks aren’t buying them for the taste.

Strangedreamer · 16/10/2026 15:54

I don't feel they are doing anything wrong necessarily. A nice day, a one off perhaps? Like with anything if they can't get through the day without it, there's the problem. People who drink and have kids will be doing this around them at some point and this is not necessarily a bad thing. Everything in moderation and all that.

HedgerowD · 16/10/2026 15:53

Sounds like a really lovely afternoon to me. I don't drink too often now but I do enjoy a glass of wine.

InterestedDad37 · 16/10/2026 15:52

Sitting on a picnic blanket having a 'naice' glass of prosecco? No probs.
Sprawling on a park bench covered in vomit and singing "Dirty Old Town"? Probably not 🤣

ChateauMargaux · 16/10/2026 14:58

The playmobil playground set had a park bench and a nice green bottle of whatever for the parents... just saying!

Get them early, that's what I say !! 😁
