To think people shouldn't park on yellow lines or park dangerously near schools?

It happens constantly; both at my little one's primary, and also at my older child's secondary?
Junctions are also parked on, and driveways blocked.
Sadly a lady was knocked over at a crossing near the primary school a few weeks' ago. Of course we don't know the ins and outs, but selfish parking does absolutely reduce visibility.

Think about your logic there. A car driver killed a child... but you say it doesnt count as the child was on a bicycle instead of on foot.

Yes but schools actively encourage children to cycle to school instead of been driven by their parents, pretending there are no risks involved. Where I live two children were killed by vans within a year of each other whilst cycling to school. There have been no children killed so far by children being dropped off by parents, not to my knowledge anyway.

@AnnaQuayRules I'm the OP, but this wasn't my post?

Just wondering if the headteacher thought to ask the parents directly why they are parking there before contacting the police? It seems extreme to call the police on children's parents. Have they ever thought of the knock on effect on the wellbeing of the children in her care if the police choose to act on it. The implications for the children could be severe if parents get into trouble. That should be at the forefront of any good headteachers mind instead of willy nilly contacting the police.

No prizes for guessing if you are one of the offenders, @Wishingplenty

It is hardly likely to happen though is it? There has been more children killed riding a bike to school in the past couple of years than children being dropped off safely by parents. But that fact is too inconvenient a truth for the anti car brigade agenda pushers!

I don't know why councils don't send traffic wardens round more often. The takings would more than cover the overtime+bonus and booze for the council's Christmas party.

At our school they show up every couple of weeks and on the days they do, people suddenly seem to be very considerate drivers and parkers. Next day it's back to normal. I think unless they are there daily it makes no difference. The area we are in is very suburban so they would never just be passing by.

The parents would be in a lot more trouble than a parking ticket, or points on a license, if they were to injure or kill a child.

My Dad lives opposite a primary school. There was this one parent who parked on his driveway every day, blocking his car in. He repeatedly asked her not to, to which she giggled and said "Ooh but it's so handy" 🙄 The head eventually managed to get her to stop, so now she parks on the zig zags instead. What a prize tosser.

Didimum · 16/10/2026 15:00

My kids' school is always emailing about this. It's a real issue.

nuttymut · 16/10/2026 14:45

It’s not a new thing , my kids are 33 and 35 and we had dickheads parking irresponsibly then . I regularly drive past my local primary school and the parking is crazy , on the double yellow lines , the zigzag lines , over residents drives . Today I saw a parent doing a three point turn outside the school gates!!!! . 8.45 am really busy with parents and children .
some parents leave their brains at home on the school run and it’s often the ones in big SUVs and 4x4s.

JohnofWessex · 16/10/2026 14:33

Police officers can give points for parking offences.

I suggest that if they did it would 'deter' at least some drivers

Either that or start towing

In my area it is chaos at school time. We are over run with traffic wardens at other times of the day but at school time they are all in the pay and display car parks ( of which there are many) ticketing the people who have overstayed by one minute. It is easier than being abused by parents.

looselegs · 16/10/2026 14:08

I'm a childminder and have done school runs to our local primary school for 25 years. I actually gave them up in July, and the driving and parking was one of the reasons why.
I've seen it all- I could write a book about it.
But it's gradually got worse over the last few years. Parents parking on people's driveways then swearing at the owner when asked to move...parking on the zebra crossing.....shouting at the crossing lady and the traffic wardens....literally abandoning cars in the road so it's completely blocked....the entitlement of people is astounding. Unfortunately the head teacher has no jurisdiction over the area outside of school grounds so can only send out letters. So glad I don't go there anymore- I don't miss it!

KassandraOfSparta · 16/10/2026 14:00

I live very near a primary school and have seen it all, and then some.

It boils down to the fact that some people just don;'t care. They don't care if they are parking like a dickhead, endangering others, block in residents. The ONLY thing that matters is being as close as humanly possible to the school gate to minimise their walking time.

When challenged it's all "I'll only be a minute", or "why do you care?" or "but it's raining!"

Selfish, lazy fuckers.

Yet another email has been sent out by the secondary school, but it won't change anything.
I don't understand why people think they have the right to park dangerously and/or illegally?

I've noticed most of the offenders park at best inconsiderately and at times dangerously or illegally wherever they are - supermarket, street parking, car parks ect. When you do something every day, every time you get in your car, I suppose their awful moral compass is so desensitised to their inconsiderate and dangerous parking so they no longer think what they are doing is wrong.

I've seen many of the key offenders at our school parked in disabled bays, parked across 2 normal spaces, parked up on the curb so wheelchairs and prams can't get passed, parked on double yellows, double parked on a busy road with hazards flashing so they can use a cash machine ect.

I do wonder if some do it purely for attention. The worst offenders round us either have personalised numberplates or custom detailing on their car which means their cars stand out.

TigerRag · 16/10/2026 13:53

I live near a school. I'm glad because of the way the roads are laid out, this doesn't seem to be an issue. The parents are sensible enough to park on the side roads

TheCoolHare · 16/10/2026 13:51

Just how it is nowadays. It's the same people, in the same spaces every day at my DDs primary. The double yellows mean nothing at all.

It's the attitude of 'Oh, I'm only picking up/dropping off and won't be long' that they seem to say to themselves to justify it. When you combine it with a couple of dozen of them, it's the usual bunfight to get out of there.

Always the Mercs, BMWs and Audis too, isn't it? 👀

Quine0nline · 16/10/2026 13:44

Good. Breaking the law is a crime. You know what a double yellow line or zig zag means. You follow the law. If the local authority can persuade the local.pilce to enforce a law and fine a few drivers then all to the good.

@Bjorkdidit They will be the selfish people putting other's lives at risk by parking wherever they like.

Yes, but they don't usually acknowledge it or admit it on here.

Bearbookagainandagain · 16/10/2026 13:39

Actually I saw a car yesterday parked on the zig zag outside my son's school... The rest of the street was empty since it was 5pm, so a parent coming to get there kids from school club. They had about of dozens of other options, but really needed to save those 10 sec...

I'm amazed so many parents need to park near the school at all. Particularly primary when everyone (here at least) lives within 10-20 min walk of the school (20 min max, we are at the threshold, most families live much closer than this).

It's an all other level of laziness.

BurntBroccoli · 16/10/2026 13:32

Who are the 18% who think you are being unreasonable?!

Assume they are guilty of doing it. I live near a school and it drives me nuts the amount of entitled parents I see.

That's what I want to know. This sounds like one of those threads where there is no argument for the unreasonable, but apparently there are 4 or 5 people who think it's fine to park dangerously.
