To think people shouldn't park on yellow lines or park dangerously near schools?

It happens constantly; both at my little one's primary, and also at my older child's secondary?
Junctions are also parked on, and driveways blocked.
Sadly a lady was knocked over at a crossing near the primary school a few weeks' ago. Of course we don't know the ins and outs, but selfish parking does absolutely reduce visibility.

Well of course it is not okay. At best it is entitled, at worst it is dangerous. There are 2 primary schools and a secondary at the top and bottom of my road. I live in a city but border farmland and a road 2 schools are on is single track. School pick up times are worse than the rush hour on the m621. Getting my car out to get to work in the morning, if I time it wrongly, takes longer than the drive to my office! I get (irrationally)? pissed off about the high school traffic. Most children who attend are local and there are bus stops for those who do not want to walk up the massive hill. I understand that there will be some children who for various reasons are not able to get themselves there independently, but otherwise it appears secondary age children are not expected to get themselves to and from school.

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 21:46

@ithinkthereforeyouarewrong
How would staggered pick-up times work for working parents, as just one example? For teachers and for safeguarding?
It isn't the volume of parents parking that is usually the issue - it's the selfish way that some of them are parking that is the problem.
In addition, both of my children attend schools that are many, many years old - over 100 years old in fact - so it's not as simple as just building new schools and factoring in parking.

ithinkthereforeyouarewrong · 16/10/2026 21:43

I do agree but I also think councils should consider parking when they build schools not because parents deserve somewhere to park but purely because of the chaos it causes and danger to children. Or staggered start/ finish times although I appreciate there would still be people with multiple children.

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 21:42

@seahorsessky Schools will of course make provisions for blue badge holders. I know that at the schools my children attend, they are offered permits which enable them to park in the school car park in the allocated disabled bays. And, as someone has already said, blue badge holders are permitted to park on double yellows under certain rules and restrictions (providing their badge is displayed I believe)?

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 21:35

@FrippEnos No - I mean people. They're not all parents/carers/grandparents.

OP posts:
MrsKeats · 16/10/2026 21:11

I live opposite a primary school. Parents block my car in every day by parking across my drive.
Parents regularly park dangerously on the zigzag lines as well.
The sense of entitlement is astonishing.

RaggedRocks · 16/10/2026 21:09

Yesterday, a car parked on the pavement, up against an electrical box, so impossible to pass without walking in the road. Called the driver a Muppet, don't think I was being unreasonable.

fridaynightzzz · 16/10/2026 20:31

They double park outside DDs secondary school (it’s okay because they put hazard lights on) even though there’s a sports centre next door with a massive car park you can use.
One day there was parents double parked on both sides blocking the extremely busy road entirely. It was quarter to three as well. They wouldn’t move until they were made to. It was chaos.

putitonthewrongway · 16/10/2026 20:28

It’s always the same faces, at least you know who the CFs are and they are best avoided! One of the mums that does it near my daughter’s school also parks in the mother and baby parking when she doesn’t have her kids with her so these people feel entitled in all areas of their life I’m guessing.

DoubleBusy2026 · 16/10/2026 20:25

I’ve just now been told off for ‘idling’ (in my EV!) in the school car park whilst picking DD up from her school disco. Parked perfectly legally, in a space, but apparently I’m “idling” 🤯 Complete with faked coughing 😆😆😆

Shoobadadoo · 16/10/2026 20:22

We have parking wardens at our school every single drop off and pick up windows for 15 mins. They ticket you within 30 seconds. It’s such low hanging fruit!! My husband got one, stupid man. Didn’t do it again.

ive seen 3 other cars with tickets. Usually dads. Usually once once before they realise it’s serious. It’s a great deterrent for stupid parking

DoubleBusy2026 · 16/10/2026 20:22

Just responding to the yellow lines part - don’t forget, those with blue badges can legally park on double yellow lines for up to 3 hours, as long as they are not blocking anyone’s driveway or obstructing a lane.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 16/10/2026 20:19

Bizarrest thing here is the school has a car park that parents can use... but apparently parking on the housing estate opposite is better.

seahorsessky · 16/10/2026 20:14

BurntBroccoli · 16/10/2026 13:32

Who are the 18% who think you are being unreasonable?!

Assume they are guilty of doing it. I live near a school and it drives me nuts the amount of entitled parents I see.

Agree, I guess they're thinking of people with disabilities? But I wouldn't think OP meant those who legally can park differently due to this.
A lot of people who don't have kids think that those of us who do these days tend to be very entitled. Can't deny a lot are. But I suppose a generation or two ago, most mums didn't have to rush to work, and grandma/dad often didn't work so could help with pick ups, roads were quieter, schools were smaller so parking spots weren't all taken, and generally kids were better behaved, so less last minute rushing, so it was easier in the past.
But it's no excuse, and I wouldn't park badly.

LadyChilli · 16/10/2026 20:00

The argument will be "But where do you expect us to park?", as though parking at the immediate destination is a right akin to breathing (breathing apparently less of a right, for the children who stand breathing the fumes from their idling engines as they wait on the zig zags). Because people cannot countenance walking a couple of streets. Of course they would be horrified if they had to explain to their DC that a classmate was dead. I imagine each one thinks they personally are only making things a little bit unsafe, and don't stop to think that their selfishness multiplied by many parents means significant danger for a lot of children.

FrippEnos · 16/10/2026 19:54

By people, do you actually mean parents?
because you can say that.

LeBonBon · 16/10/2026 19:53

BirdLandedonmyHead · 16/10/2026 19:23

Think about your logic there. A car driver killed a child... but you say it doesnt count as the child was on a bicycle instead of on foot.

Tbf near us you really have to drive at 2mph and be super vigilant to avoid an accident. There's a road just next to the high school that we have to turn right into to get DCs to the nursery behind, and the boys on bikes appear out of nowhere and bomb across without looking. It's really frightening when you think you've done your checks and can see all the pedestrians stopped but then the bikes don't. I do crawl and just stop if I see a hint of a wheel.

I know lots wouldn't though.

Livelovebehappy · 16/10/2026 19:39

Agree. I live very near a school and it seems parents turn into monsters at drop off and pick up times. We get sworn at or screamed at if we point out that theyre blocking a drive or parking dangerously. Just park a little further away. Often the parents and their kids who park on the zig zags look like a bit of exercise would benefit.

Error404FucksNotFound · 16/10/2026 19:36

They dont care.

Im sure I their minds they have a reason
I have to get to work
Im in a rush
I cant park further away
We'll be late
Its only a few minutes
Everyone does it
Its not a big deal

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 19:34

@Wishingplenty What do you think the solution is?

OP posts:
AnnaQuayRules · 16/10/2026 19:34

@Wishingplenty we are not the "anti car brigade" - I and DH are both drivers, as are most parents. I am, however, an anti "selfish parent driver" . It's fine to drive your child to school if you have to, but there is absolutely no need to park dangerously, block driveways, park on yellow lines or zig zags etc. people who do that are incredibly entitled and have no worries about putting children in danger

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 19:33

@Jimmyjumpy So if everyone genuinely thinks it isn't reasonable, why on earth it is such a widespread problem?!!! Someone's got to be parking irresponsibly!

OP posts:
Wishingplenty · 16/10/2026 19:33

AnnaQuayRules · 16/10/2026 19:26

No prizes for guessing if you are one of the offenders, @Wishingplenty

Edited

Nope sorry I am not. However I have witnessed vigilante type behaviour from parents directed at other parents and the outcome was not good. I don't think it is good to encourage parents to turn on each other, often the "do gooders" end up causing the most harm.

Jimmyjumpy · 16/10/2026 19:31

YABU for asking if YABU! Its against the law isnt it for that kind of parking?

AnnaQuayRules · 16/10/2026 19:30

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 19:28

@AnnaQuayRules I'm the OP, but this wasn't my post?

Apologies, meant to cite @Wishingplenty. I've now amended my post!
