FOUR out of FIVE new jobs went to foreigners in the past decade, new report reveals

Four in five jobs created over the past decade have been taken by migrants.

Of the 3.7million new roles recorded under the PAYE system since 2014, just 734,000 were taken by UK nationals, a think-tank has found.

EU citizens accounted for 408,000 jobs, while the vast majority – 2.5million – went to migrants from the rest of the world, the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) said, with most of the surge coming since the pandemic.

The think-tank warned that while employers gained 'unprecedented access to overseas labour', taxpayers have been forced to absorb the cost of millions of Britons being 'written off' and left on benefits.

As the number of migrant workers soared by 2.1million from 2020, the number of people receiving out-of-work benefits across the UK rose by 2.3million.

More than one in four (29 per cent) of the jobs that went to migrant workers from outside Europe were in health and social work.

So much for British jobs for British people!

Do we think this is due to Brits being 'too lazy to work' or because of a combination of employers wanting to pay lower wages and offer worse working conditions to migrants/preferring to employ migrants/not wanting to invest in training Brits/diversity hire tick boxes etc.

You understand that immigrants are a wide range of people? It is quite possible for different parts of the immigrant population to doing both?

We have highly skilled immigrants coming in to be Doctors, AI specialists, architects etc and we have low skilled immigrants coming in to do care work, cleaning, coffee making, fast food sales.

And unless they have ILR they won’t be eligible for benefits. Although given the data source includes UK citizens as well as those with ILR it’s a moot point.

Ahh pesky schrodingers immigrant.

Both claiming 3k a week in benefits and taking all our jobs.

Oh dear, is that because you don't like what I'm saying. Dismiss me as a bot 😂

Why would a Russian bot want to come on a Mums forum?

Bots appear on all sorts of forums. Their purpose is to whip people up into a frenzy, sow discontent and destabilise nations.
Sounds like a conspiracy theory? It's really not.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 15/10/2026 12:19

My best mate is a chef. Trying to hire people for the kitchen. Very often, British people don't turn up for the interview, turn up late, or have a load of unworkable conditions like they won't work weekends or split shifts. Often when they start, they last a couple of shifts before walking out because its too difficult. The workers who were not born in the UK don't tend to have as many of these issues and tend to stick at the job. They can't increase the wages because the increases in costs of energy and ingredients has already caused huge increases in the costs of running a restaurant, and any further price increases will mean customers just won't go. Customers don't want to pay 2x more to eat out than they do already, or accept that their meal takes an hour longer to come out because employees haven't turned up again.

Boomer55 · 15/10/2026 11:47

If Brits applied for the jobs, and were willing to fit in with potential employers, I’m sure there would be more employed.

The care services just can’t get that many British staff.

@Meatymeatytimetoeaty gave a good analysis of the problems with the CSJ report in a post at 18.18 yesterday. I am scrolling casually and apologise if I’ve skipped over anyone else.

Worth chucking the report through AI with a prompt asking about credibility and bias btw….

Hi, @titchy -

I haven’t got beyond this excellent suggestion yet, so others may have replied already. What better use of a slow day?

As you may have guessed the report is methodologically suspect. It confuses correlation and causation: many British went on benefits owing to aftereffects of COVID, and their jobs were not filled by British workers. The report also over counts, as it counts PAYE entries at HMRC. Employed immigrants are more likely to work more than one job, and each job is counted separately.

Furthermore the report counts naturalised British citizens as immigrants forevermore (hence part of the immigrant count), which I find borderline racist.

I could go on, but I will only say that in the care sector in particular British people do not seem to want the jobs that are available. (I first took against Zack Polanski when he made a disparaging comment implying that reasonable people don’t want to wipe other people’s bums.) The sector is so big that this has an impact on numbers.

ForPlumReader · 15/10/2026 10:03

I live and work in a city. My workplace advertised a generic job recently, above minimum wage, standard 9-5, and no specific skills required. We didn't receive any applications from UK nationals.

This site is well known to be left wing. People on here literally parrot Labour sound bytes with no critical thinking whatsoever. No one is spending time and effort posting on here in the hope of influencing someone to vote in a particular way. If they actually believe they are, I truly despair.

Left wing? Are you taking the piss?! 😁
I've been on here for absolute years, and yes, it used to be very left wing leaving but it changed quite a while ago. There's been a definite shift to the right for anyone paying attention.
It used to be "underneath" and people denying it, but it's out and blatant now.

I should imagine a vast majority of those with families will be claiming top up benefits like housing benefit, universal credit, child benefit and also using services like the NHS, schools, etc while paying very little in.

We are also paying the same benefits to Brits who can't find a job.

You do the Math.

Are you in the UK? It's Maths. Not math.

But hang on - I thought they all came here to not work , claim benefits and hang around doing nothing. So which is it or are you just stirring up hatred .

This.

No real surprise. Many Brits have got too fat and lazy to be employable. Cut the amounts paid in benefits and they will soon get off their arses and get a job job.

I agree with this. Able bodied young people should be working. We need a system of carrots and sticks to get things back on track. No young person should be on benefits and dependent on their mum to pay for their IPhone, unless they are severely disabled.

5MinuteArgument · 15/10/2026 09:38

Skippydoodle · 14/10/2026 21:46

No, cheapest.

Yes, and it was Gordon Brown, Labour prime minister, that said we should have British jobs for British workers. This used to be something people on the left believed in. Now they seem to be quite happy for us to have millions of our own people festering on the dole while importing millions from abroad which has led to pressure on all our services and has caused housing costs to sky-rocket.

Crazy situation.

Well, I use various approaches to lobby and canvas but yes, I enjoy talking to people face to face and I don't need to save time.

Use social media - reach 8 million people
Speak face to face - maybe 30 people a day.

Still it's good that you enjoy it. Whatever it is.

BIossomtoes · 15/10/2026 08:40

They won’t if they’re not employable. Who’s going to give them a job or even a job job?

There have recently been £5000 incentives for businesses to hire someone from India, which costs businesses less overall because they can pay them less. From a purely business decision, it makes sense. It's not right, but it makes sense.

And don't get me started on employees on "skilled worker" visas working at kebab shops.

I think there's a lot of scams going on like this. Yes, we do have a problem with work ethic amongst some people but I think there's things like this which are making it harder for UK people to be recruited.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 14/10/2026 22:17

The Centre for Social Justice is basically the policy factory for the Tory Party. I wouldn't pay too much attention. They caused the current stagnant economy.

It’s horrible to see our young people left on benefits because they cannot find work.
My dd who finished her A level with great grades is struggling to find anything and has gone for hundreds of jobs.
She is polite, hardworking and drives yet has been rejected from retail, catering and various other roles despite being flexible and open minded about what she does.
its soul destroying and leaves the question what are employers looking for?
Unfortunately I do believe the employment market is being taken over by foreign nationals who tend to like to employ their own.
Our young people have no opportunities in their own country it’s depressing.

Yes, I think this does happen. The consequences of young British people being pushed out of their own labour market will be dire for this country.

Skippydoodle · 14/10/2026 21:46

Naurrr · 14/10/2026 17:03

British jobs for British people!

Who said that? Sounds like something from League of Gentlemen.

Employers want the best candidates for their roles.

No, cheapest.

5MinuteArgument · 14/10/2026 21:42

I think there's a whole load of issues leading to this. But building an economic scrapheap of British people, especially young people, while importing mainly low waged workers from abroad is an absolute disaster for this country.

It means we have massive pressure on housing, all our services, water, sewage, and it means our wildlife and natural environment are depleted and diminished. All while a mental health crisis develops, partly caused by people being unemployed.

But never mind. Diversity innit.
