FOUR out of FIVE new jobs went to foreigners in the past decade, new report reveals

OpenScroller · 14/10/2026 16:48

Four in five jobs created over the past decade have been taken by migrants.

Of the 3.7million new roles recorded under the PAYE system since 2014, just 734,000 were taken by UK nationals, a think-tank has found.

EU citizens accounted for 408,000 jobs, while the vast majority – 2.5million – went to migrants from the rest of the world, the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) said, with most of the surge coming since the pandemic.

The think-tank warned that while employers gained 'unprecedented access to overseas labour', taxpayers have been forced to absorb the cost of millions of Britons being 'written off' and left on benefits.

As the number of migrant workers soared by 2.1million from 2020, the number of people receiving out-of-work benefits across the UK rose by 2.3million.

More than one in four (29 per cent) of the jobs that went to migrant workers from outside Europe were in health and social work.

So much for British jobs for British people!

Do we think this is due to Brits being 'too lazy to work' or because of a combination of employers wanting to pay lower wages and offer worse working conditions to migrants/preferring to employ migrants/not wanting to invest in training Brits/diversity hire tick boxes etc.

a. Fruit picking veg picking etc a lot of which is LIVE IN work. If you rent social housing you have to actually live there. You are not allowed to live away from home for the length of time these employers want you to. If you want that you will need to give SH tenants more rights! But that would also mean giving them more rights to leave their home for other reasons Up for that are we? Dont bother cos i know the answer to that already.
b. Gas safety checks fire door checks electric checks Surveys My tenancy agreement says i have to be home for these and no i cant get a friend or neighbour to do it for me.
c. the hatred there is for SH tenants ensures that some busybody would probably report the flat as abandoned if a tenant were to risk their tenancy by taking this job (which id bet money some on this thread would do)
d. i have mentioned SH tenants because they will be the most likely group expected to take these jobs yet their hands are tied and they cant And even if they wont perhaps they want a life after the working day (just like home owners have) You know the ones who arent expected to do these jobs instead of sharing a berth with a stranger"

The MN hypocrisy on this is stark . Moan like fuck when tenants break their tenancy agreements for any other reason but are happy for tenants to break tenancy agreements by not living there. Oh but only when it comes to back breaking work. Not for other reasons. Cos when you rent social housing you actually have to live there. Retired friend of mine is currently going through a benefit check. Ive seen the letter and one of the questions queries that hes actually living there. You want SH tenants to do these jobs you will have to allow them more leeway and rights but that would also mean they could leave their home for other reasons and have more choice and i know lots of Mners would not want that. Because they want it both ways.

As I wrote, the farm had a bus that could pick people up before work and take them home after work. The farm had also informed the job centre that they were willing to add more stops for the bus, in case people lived too far from the existing stops.

So no, it was not necessarily live in work. It was live in work for some of the foreigners, but most of us preferred to live in town just like the Brits. I worked in the office but some of the fruit pickers lived close to me in town. Mind you, they were all foreign.

I would also like to add that while the farm had more fruit pickers in the spring and the summer, there were a lot of fruit pickers/farm hands who worked all of the year. This was mainly due to the fact that most of the plants were in greenhouse tunnels, which extended the season for most of the fruit. For instance, when you grow strawberries outside, the season is six weeks long, but in a greenhouse or greenhouse tunnel, the strawberry season is six months long.

So no, actually not hypocrisy.

I thought I was going mad too. PP was on about people going to Australia to pick fruit.

Yes Her exact words were "yet Brits go to Australia to pick fruit" Well the only ones who can afford to do that are middle class teens. Its an attempt at back tracking and not a successful one And as for the name calling Well that usually happens when someone has lost their side of the debate.

Why is it less productive than working in a shop or something

Young, generally middle-class Brits go backpacking around Australia and do fruit picking/seasonal work to help fund their trip.

If you cannot see the difference between a young, middle-class Brit taking a gap year and a working-class parent who needs to be home to do the school run and isn't allowed to leave their HA house empty, I don't know how to help explain it to you.

Posted before i saw this. Im so so sick of repeating myself when it comes to the rules on social housing

I can tell you that it is completely impossible to get ethnic British people to work as fruit pickers. When I worked for a farm, they all laughed when I asked where they advertised in Britain. Once, in 2014-2016, I can't remember when, they contacted a job centre that informed the farm that they would send 45 people for an interview. 7 turned up. Only 4:were physically capable of doing the job. Ie. only 4 were not obese. The farm had a bus and was willing to pick up people several places in the city centre each day and drive them home in the afternoon.

It is beneath Brits apparently. A lot of them have the same reaction to jobs like cleaners and carers.

I remember reading on Facebook that a non-British woman who was a manager got told by the company receptionist, that she ( the receptionist) had voted for Brexit because she hoped she could then get the manager's job. The manager had a Master's degree and spoke several languages. The receptionist had her GCSEs and only spoke English.

I also heard from a science professor at a British university that the majority of his team was foreign because most of the Brits with an education in science simply didn't know maths on a sufficiently high level. It was also a problem to find Brits who can do large scale programming. Ie. they cannot handle large data sets. He felt that the problem is that they students pay for their education and therefore the universities have a tendency to let students pass who really really shouldn't pass or to lower the level of the exam so that everyone can pass.

My point here is that the problem isn't the foreigners.

Left wing? Are you taking the piss?! 😁
I've been on here for absolute years, and yes, it used to be very left wing leaving but it changed quite a while ago. There's been a definite shift to the right for anyone paying attention.
It used to be "underneath" and people denying it, but it's out and blatant now.

Yet brits go over to Australia and pick fruit there

To be fair, it's one of few jobs you can do on a tourist visa AND many Australian farmers complain at how work-shy the English and Aussie workers are compared with other migrants workers. Some go as far as refusing british immigrant workers.

Do 16/17/18 year olds get benefits?

Because I specifically mentioned young people in my post, not unemployed people. I don't think my friend particularly cares about when applicants last worked or how long they've been unemployed.

You have to be 18 to get Universal Credit. A 16 or 17 year old would only get it in exceptional circumstances like they have no parental support, they are a young parent or they are disabled.

Fimofriend · 16/10/2026 09:27

Well I think they are going because they ran out of job prospects in the UK. They go to Australia and hope they'll gain experiences there which will help with the job hunt when they return - or they'll find more meaningful work there.

So you have actually never met anyone who has gone to Australia as a fruit picker. Ok.

I would also question this
I also heard from a science professor at a British university that the majority of his team was foreign because most of the Brits with an education in science simply didn't know maths on a sufficiently high level.

Britains education results are actually pretty good compared to the rest of the world. The UK scores in the top ranks of the global Pisa ranking for maths (It's basically the UK, Estonia and all the rest are Asian countries in the top ten). At a higher education level the science training/research and the connections top universities have to businesses are usually cited by industry leaders as one of the things the UK has going for it for industry (countered by the high electricity costs, lack of space, Brexit etc). That doesn't mean that employers won't want to recruit from overseas as well because if you want someone who is the very best in a very specialist area you spread the net wide. The UK is also very attractive to very talented people from India/Asia. Partly because the pay is better. Partly because of the high regard its Universities are held in ironically. So UK graduates are competing against the very best of much more populous countries (who to be fair take maths very seriously and also do very well in the Pisa rankings). We have issues
But it is nonsense to suggest that science degrees from top UK universities are looked down on or providing substantially inferior graduates.

I think you and the PP you quote can both be both correct; she is referring to a very specialised situation. I don’t think she is disparaging British degrees.

In several Continental countries and in North America, STEM students in maths-intensive disciplines take maths course units with maths students and other STEM students. (I am less familiar with the organisation of Asian undergraduate programmes.) Depending on the STEM discipline, some of these can be quite advanced.

The English Russell Group+ norm is to offer courses within each School, sometimes within each degree programme, focusing on the specific maths needed for the degree. At the BSc and MSc levels this is more efficient, and it presumably works well at the business and manufacturing interface.

But it does not produce anything like the same depth of knowledge, and this limitation will show in a research lab. It’s a question of optimising your curriculums for your national educational goals (or perhaps, across all countries, doing it the way it has always been done).

I think we need to realise the realities of fruit picking and the era we live in now.
My partner and both did fruit picking and tattie riddling in our youths but.times have changed!

For one thing the climate has changed a lot since I was doing it in the middle to late 90s, growing things has become a lot more challenging and unstable. A big strawberry farm in our area closed permanently last year because it has just become too much of a struggle to grow the fruit every year.

The other aspect of climate change is expecting people to be out in very exposed fields in searing heat! I can remember getting sunburnt to hell when I used to do it and that's before we had these long heatwave summers! You can't just drop people at a field and leave them there all day without shelter because temperatures are too high in the summer.

In my fruit picking / tattie riddling days, you never had access to a toilet, hand washing area or anything all day! You were dropped off out in the fields in the back of beyond and left there all day with nothing! I don't think in this day and age that farmers can get away with doing that now! I wouldn't want to do it now as I have IBS now. I think this is why you don't see many fruit picking / field work jobs advertised because farmers nowadays would probably have to fork out for hiring mobile welfare units and mobile cleaners to keep them clean and well stocked with soap and toilet paper.

My friend owns and runs a shop and does this. It's not because she wants or needs 3 years' experience; it is to put off the applicants who gaze gormlessly at you as if you're speaking an alien language when you ask them to mop the floor, or the ones you need to take 10 minutes to explain to them why tins should be put on the shelf label-forward.

She doesn't like employing young people with no experience, not because they're young or British, but because she's taken too many chances on them only to find out they have no life skills and very little in the way of common sense. They want to work; they apply in droves when she advertises, but she's very reluctant to give any more of them a chance, hence advertising for 3 years' experience.

The problem is that's why so many people can't get a job when they leave school or higher education because you are simply not allowed to have not worked before - I get the issues but that also causes issues because it's blocking so many people from ever working.

Where do they even advertise these infamous fruit-picking jobs? I live in the NE, so near plenty of countryside. I have never ever seen any jobs for fruit picking advertised.

I imagine that is the biggest reason why British teens don't "want" to pick fruit. They don't know it is an option available to them because the jobs are advertised overseas to attract foreign workers who will work longer hours than is legal, for less pay than is legal.

They mostly do it as mass recruitment through agencies so the jobs will be advertised abroad. Generally I would be very against that but fruit picking is the sort of job it makes sense for. This also happens in the UK where you can sign up with an agency to pick fruit in Australia etc. It's a popular way for young people to part fund a year travelling (pick fruit for some of the time, see the sights the rest) and there just aren't the Aussies available to do it in large enough numbers.

I have a (UK) friend who lived rurally and they did do farm work.like fruit picking. They wernt stopped from doing it but almost all the other employees were Easter European because there just weren't enough people living locally to do it. And it's easier for the farmer to outsource to a recruitment agency etc and just provide accomodation to everyone

I guess you could look into ways of making it more accessible to UK terms as I am sure there are some it would work for. But they would be in a minority and Id rather the government focussed on apprenticeships etc because those provide longer term solutions.

Ok, and most "youngsters" will also be applying for jobs actively. It's almost a full time occupation and you can't really be out of contact for a long time because if someone comes back with a job offer or asks you to come to an interview and you don't reply on time you lose the opportunity. 6 weeks work isn't worse than sweet fuck all but it is worse than getting a full time job because you were there when they rang. Even temporary jobs in shops, factories etc can easily turn into permanent jobs. Even a part time job on Mcdonalds offers the chance to go full time and progress to manager. Fruit picking work isnt like that. There isn't anything to be promoted to after the season is over if they really like the work ethic.

I already explained why it's more attractive for people coming from overseas. Reading comprehension darling.

I graduated in 2008 just as everything went to absolute shit economy wise. And I can remember the utter misery of living at home applying for job after job after job. And then hearing helpful opinions on how young people today don't want to work.

I applied for every job out there. I also applied for jobs I really wanted that I was qualified for because why wouldn't I? A "dream job" if you will
And in the long run all of that paid of because Inended up getting a job I really wanted just as I had given up hope. I wouldnt have been able to get it now because of Brexit but that's another conversation.

By "dream job" substitute maybe "job that lasts longer than 6 weeks and that pays above minimum wage? And yes, I imagine a young person would be pretty gutted if they missed out on such a job or on a job they really wanted due to not replying to a job offer in time. Because they don't hate themselves and wish I'll.on themselves

Where does this idea that people younger than you are lazy.come from? It's quite unpleasant. Maybe you could go pick strawberries to prove how much better you are? Don't be lazy and wait till spring, get yourself down to a farm with your CV and ask to start work now. See how that goes.
