To expect people ill with Covid stay home?

LakelandHiker · 12/10/2026 18:09

This week, my manager and a friend who goes to my exercise class are ill with Covid. I don't know if they've tested, but they've both said they have it. However one is still coming into the office and the other still attending the exercise class. AIBU or overreacting here... but why don't they stay home until clear? Even if 'feeling 95% better' wouldn't you wait until potentially exposing others? I can't help but feel mad at them both for being so selfish. I often look after an elderly relative and can't risk passing Covid on to her as she is frail. I get life can't be on pause forever but my manager can get paid sick leave and my friend can miss a class, it isn't like there's anything at stake...

In a word: yes. In more words: you also make decisions that benefit you and you only care about this because you're impacted.

The elderly have been dying each year in their thousands from the flu for how long? Did you ever stay home to protect them or think to wear a mask? No, you didn't. You only care / we only care when we are personally impacted.

Who on earth goes out and about with the flu?

And yes, I absolutely would be considerate of elderly people if I had a virus/bacterial infection of any description.

I continue to be happy
about my workplace that bans people with known contagious illness from the building. People are free to work from home, but exposing others to illness is not acceptable.

It’s terrifying how quickly so many people went back to being selfish. Covid could have helped people learn about how disease impacts vulnerable people and chosen to do better. Truly the only option is to legislate against antisocial behavior and make people responsible for knowingly spreading disease.

It was the same at my last workplace. My boss told me to stay home for four days when I had a cold - it wasn't covid, I tested every day. I couldn't even wfh either.

aliasfrog · 12/10/2026 19:51

You were all happy to do that during the pandemic and then pat yourselves on the back for protecting the vulnerable.

Don't worry though, it'll never happen. Nobody is willing to even wear a mask to potentially save a life. We disabled people know where we stand in the pecking order. It sure would be nice if we didn't have to constantly be at the bottom though.

I'm bowing out of this thread now.

Your first sentence shows you were on MN during the pandemic Did you miss the threads detailing where disabled ppl and people with certain conditions couldnt wear masks and the way they were treated on here because of it. One of them was even featured in a book

How do you know that noone tests? The tests are easy to find in the pharmacies. I always take one when I have a cold that I think may be Covid.

Why? What difference does it make?

Ooh, aren’t you the tough one (I assume that’s what you want us to think, anyway)…

Ever heard of sick pay?

You know not everyone gets sick pay, surely?

Because people talk and no one at work, friends or relatives test or know anyone who tests. Because of the multiple responses on this thread saying no one tests. Because of the multiple responses on similar heads saying no one tests. And I said “almost” no one tests.

Covid is not a variant of the cold. It is a different virus.

Staying home when contagious, regardless of the virus causing it, is just common decency. Obviously, it’s not always possible if you don’t get paid sick leave or an option to work from home but nobody needs to spread their germs at an exercise class.

Common decency doesn’t pay my bills 🙁

FunPartyIdeas · 12/10/2026 19:59

@SquirrelGG Self-employed people, no. Zero.

I am amazed at the number of people saying you can't stay at home. Of course you can, although I fully understand that it can cause financial difficulties if you have to live on SSP for any length of time. By the way, for those who are not aware, SSP is now payable from the first day of sickness and must be paid to all employees, including those on part time or zero hours contracts.

Current government advice is that anyone with symptoms of a respiratory infection who also has a high temperature or does not feel well enough to work should stay at home if possible. If it really is not possible, they should take precautions including wearing a face mask or similar face covering.

a week of SSP would cause extreme financial strain for my family. I care more about my family than strangers so I will be going to work to get full pay regardless. It’s amazing that you aren’t affected by SSP and are privileged enough for that to be the case but the vast majority of workers aren’t.

BeanNaGealai · 12/10/2026 19:58

HappyLizard23 · 12/10/2026 18:14

YABU, stay at home is no longer required and most workplaces will expect people in if they have a cold (which Covid is a variant of).
edit; also who is testing these days?! I just assume I have a cold and go about my life

Care home.

OhMyGodSusan · 12/10/2026 19:57

God sake it's just a bad cold. People need to get over this covid nonsense, could be worse could be in Russia and it be the plague!

SquirrelGG · 12/10/2026 19:57

FunPartyIdeas · 12/10/2026 18:31

@HappyLizard23 I'm with you - unless I am bedbound I can't afford not to go to work. Rent to pay!
People who don't understand this lead very privileged lives indeed.

Don't people in the UK get sick pay?

Awkwardisfunny · 12/10/2026 19:57

@Ponderingwindow Lucky you.
There are others of us who are not paid if off sick and can't WFH.

WestwardHo1 · 12/10/2026 19:56

A very large number of people are self employed. No one will pay their sick pay if they "stay home" because they've got a sore throat.

During the pandemic my employer paid full pay if off with Covid, although I was furloughed anyway. Now I’d not be paid and could end up getting in trouble too.

Your situation sounds incredibly challenging but it’s isn’t everybody else’s fault for just living their lives.

HappyLizard23 · 12/10/2026 19:56

Iwantanothergo · 12/10/2026 19:55

If you think having Covid is always just like having a cold, you’ve never had a bad or even moderately bad case of Covid.

I caught Covid over a month ago (probably from someone with an awful cough sitting very near me in a restaurant - DH and I were annoyed at the time but there wasn’t much we could do about it - and have only just got over it. At one point my GP advised me to go to A & E for urgent blood tests as he thought I was dehydrated (terrible diarrhoea for a week, even with only drinking, hardly eating) and I needed a saline drip. The most tough person alive can’t just "go about their life" when they have a high fever, an almost continuous bad cough, low oxygen when SATS measured, and uncontrollable diarrhoea ten times a day - and certainly can’t without infecting many other people.

Luckily I’m basically healthy so didn’t need hospital admission for more than a few hours, but anybody already frail would have been in a very dangerous state. Don't be a selfish prat.

If going to work to provide for my family makes me a selfish prat then so be it 🤣
