AIBU - problems with antisemitism amongst NHS medical staff?

Twiglets1 · 12/10/2026 06:32

The Campaign Against Antisemitism, a prominent UK watchdog group, has identified five healthcare professionals whose public statements it considers antisemitic or anti-Israel.

The five individuals, all current or former National Health Service employees, include midwife Fatimah Mohamied, who allegedly endorsed a post supporting Palestinian “resistance” on Oct. 7, 2023 by responding “Hell yeah!!!” to a post during the Hamas-led onslaught of October 7, 2023, that said: “Palestinians have a right to resist their occupation — we have a right to support them.”

Additionally, physician Dr. Abdelaal Ragheb Elfarra claimed Zionists control the media and the world; psychiatrist Dr. Ahmed Sewehli said regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “you need to be dead”; and emergency physician Dr. Nadeem Crowe described Israel as a “terrorist octopus.” Occupational therapist Zaida Akhtar allegedly shared a video appearing to encourage violence against Netanyahu’s son and a “false flag” claim about the Bondi Beach attack in Australia last year.

The allegations concerning the medical professionals follow a review published in June by John Mann, the British government’s independent adviser on antisemitism, which found “routine ostracism” of Jewish staff and patients within the NHS.

Jewish community representatives have warned that antisemitism in healthcare can affect patients at moments of particular vulnerability.

Karen Newman, a vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, described that concern during parliamentary testimony on May 14. She spoke about Jewish patients hesitating to request kosher meals after seeing a Palestinian badge on a nurse’s uniform.

“That is not a moment when you feel good asking for kosher meals,” she said.

By your logic, if a person of Russian heritage presents as an NHS patient, an NHS employee would be perfectly justified in haranguing them for Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine?

Not at all the op was talking about comments staff had made online not haranguing patients, if staff made comments about Putin online I’d say the same.

QuiteUnbelievable · 12/10/2026 21:14

It's always surprises me how politicised NHS staff and teachers are.

I wasn’t only talking about comments staff made online. As has already been pointed out to you. Don’t make me post the key findings of the Mann review into antisemitism and racism in the NHS again.

Hmm, I don’t like the celebration of 7/10 or encouraging people to hurt someone’s relative, but being anti the genocide is a perfectly normal and reasonable political view. As long as the comments are online and not said to their patients I don’t see what the issues are. Being anti genocide or even anti Israel’s current government and its policies is not in of itself antisemitism.

What have I just read. Jews just have to put up with it while going through the same complaint channels as everyone else!! Yes, while their primary children's schools are patrolled by strict security with such an unprecedented amount of hatred, they have got to just go with the flow, in the case of hostile people they come into contact with. Fcking hell Antisemitism is sometimes cleverly hidden. Put up and shut up because its not that different to anyone else's complaints.

Don’t be ridiculous. There is a complaints procedure for all patients if they receive poor or discriminatory behaviour whilst they are receiving NHS care. That is the channel to go through should anything happen, you’re talking hypothetically not about actual incidents. Wearing a badge is not an incident. I don’t like crosses or any religious sign, neither does my gay child as he knows several religions are discriminatory towards the lgbt community however he has to suck it up if staff choose to wear religious jewellery. He does not however have to put up with abuse or discriminatory behaviour and he would need to report it in the same way as every other person. Abuse is abuse, ditto discrimination. Nobody is more worthy of protection.

Ok so as regards actual incidents there are procedures for everybody to go through. Abuse is abuse ditto racism. Everybody deserves the same level of protection.

So you would not see any reason why the poppy worn by staff in the nhs in say Belfast, where the British army were on the streets for decades, shot at and killed civilians, colluded with paramilitaries and intimidated communities, would be seen as political? Britain and the NHS covers a whole lot more than just England

Yes, Britain and the NHS covers more than just England, but it doesn't cover Northern Ireland.

They are not part of Britain and they have their own health care system. Therefore if they banned their staff from wearing poppies, that would be up to them.

QuiteUnbelievable · 12/10/2026 21:14

Yes, that's the point. It's not as if our institutions are doing such an outstanding job that they've got time to sit around discussing the ins and outs of the Palestine-Israel conflict or any of the other causes du jour.

Why don't they just get on with the jobs they are paid to do, isn't that enough?

5MinuteArgument · 12/10/2026 23:03

Boolabus · 12/10/2026 18:05

The fact you need to ask demonstrates how little you know about it tbh. Poppy wearing in northern Ireland is a contentious, divisive and politically charged issue. NHS staff there do have a personal choice whether they wear one or not but many people would see it as a symbol of British army actions in NI and not a sign of remembrance and are offended by it. The point being, dismissing poppy wearing as not political, as has been done by some posters, is not accurate, it is deeply political in some British communities.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK but not part of Britain. The NHS only covers Britain. Northern Ireland have their own health care system where I imagine they have their own policies regarding what symbols their medical staff can wear.

Oh there's nothing to see here - it's just wearing a badge. When you've got Jewish people having their places of worship blown up and their whole identity and existence being threatened, hiding antisemitism behind anti zionism has become common place and just minimises real prejudice. We are regressing.

I don't think criticising netanyahu is racist. Also you've given a sample of 5, several of which don't even seem to be about Jewish people they are about the political actions by the Israeli government, there are tens of thousands of people turning for the NHS, will some of them be racist. Yes, it's inevitable. Does that mean the NHS has a problem with anti-Semitism, no.

1.5 million people work for the NHS.

Finding 5?

You're not likely to get good answers on here. It's all going to be "what about Israel?" And I don't support the Israeli government at all.

Dr Rameh Aladwan (who was suspended) has gone absolutely mask off on her twitter. We're talking conspiracy theories about the Talmud.

certainly you can criticise Israel without being an antisemite. But there's an experience I've had more than once (as a British-American Jew) of people bringing up the conflict in a pointed way, knowing I'm Jewish, looking for my reaction.

I did once experience antisemitism on the NHS but I couldn't have proved it. I have a very obviously Jewish surname and at the time lived in a very Jewish part of north London. I was questioning th midwife about some test results, and she said something about how I was being very inquisitive (not the exact word she used, I can't remember it now) and then "but you people always are" and I knew precisely what she was referring to.

But there's an experience I've had more than once (as a British-American Jew) of people bringing up the conflict in a pointed way, knowing I'm Jewish, looking for my reaction.

I know exactly what that looks like @knitnerd90 as my sil is Irish and got it a lot in the 90s in London. Awful - almost a "declare yourself."

When the person in question ONLY criticises Israel over and over and never shows a wider concern for other conflicts/suffering, then it’s a pretty safe bet that the person is consciously or otherwise antisemitic.

Do these healthcare workers also post about the suffering and atrocities in Sudan? The persecution of the Uigyurs by China? Are they posting death to Xi Jinping? Or Putin? Are they raising awareness of the persecution of Christians by Muslims in Nigeria?

Or is it just they have an obsession where there’s a Jew to blame?

There’s no place for racism in the NHS and all UK citizens have a right to be treated fairly and without prejudice. I’m surprised and extremely disappointed that anyone would think differently.

There is no place for racism in the NHS or any other institution. No one should ever be afraid of requesting Kosher meals. It's a good think that badges are banned and I would certainly hoped that that has been extended to any political symbol and it's not just targeting Palestinian workers. No one NHS worker should make a political statement to a patient by wearing a badge.

Our governments are actively supporting the genocide taking place in Gaza and the apartheid in the West Bank. We're giving weapons and political support. There is widespread support for the actions of the Israeli Government among our politicians, the media and the community. Many attempts to raise concerns and support the people in Gaza and the Westbank are shut down as antisemitic. This is very different than other conflicts where we are not actively supporting the genocide by providing weapons and money. The idea that being horrified at a genocide is antisemitic is deeply problematic.

I don’t want to come across as dramatic but the more I read threads like this and a similar one last week the more I realise that I don’t see a future for myself as a British Jew here in the UK. The constant “it’s not anti semitism it’s anti Zionism” line is getting tired. All this attention on Gaza only stems from an obsession with the only Jewish state. There is no genocide happening and to be fair I don’t blame most on here for their views because if I were getting my news from the BBC or Sky I’d probably think the same. It’s just pathetic really how so many are so blind to the changing face of antisemitism.

This is really offensive.

All this attention on Gaza only stems from an obsession with the only Jewish state.

This for example. People are not obsessed with Israel. They are shocked by the the scale of destruction meted out to the men, women and children in Gaza. This is a good thing. Surely you would prefer a world in which people are stunned and repulsed by that?

There is no genocide happening

You can argue the toss on language or legal meanings of genocide. But - we can all agree that way too many people have died.

I realise that I don’t see a future for myself as a British Jew here in the UK

This is indeed a pity.

If they aren't also concerned about the massive levels of violence happening elsewhere in the world and only concentrate on Gaza then I assume anti semitism I'm afraid. Can't pick and chose your concern.

We, the EU and the US give massive amounts of money and favourable trade deals to Israel, so we can absolutely choose our concern.

We do not give the same favour to say - Somalia.

We can all agree I’m sure that way too many people have died.

People who say it’s genocide tend to not like it when others express the opposite opinion - that it’s not genocide.

That’s why I prefer to call it alleged genocide until the court decides. Though some don’t like that either as they think they know better than to wait for the verdict in a hugely complex court case that will take years to study all the evidence for & against the charge of genocide.

Apparently we can only be shocked by people suffering when the countries involved are ones the West trades with or gives a lot of money to.

Doesn’t feel quite right morally speaking but it conveniently explains all the focus on the Israel/Palestine conflict.

But Palestine was a British Protectorate at the time Israel was created, and the Balfour Agreement is a British document. Isn’t it the case that we have a unique historical connection & even accountability to what’s happening in Gaza and the West Bank? Isn’t that the difference?

We trade with countries because our economy is even more f’d than it currently is if we don’t. People in Palestine are being attacked because their rulers - Hamas - butchered Israelis in the most hideous possible way. Palestinians voted for Hamas. make if that what you will.

Buy this fighting is miles away. There is nothing we as a nation can do or say that will make the slightest iota of difference. People go on marches etc for one of two reasons. Either they’re caught up in the whole virtue signaling of it and don’t really understand what antisemitism is, or they’re nasty little antisemites. Either way it’s grim. We need to focus efforts on making changes that improve OUR country, not whining about things going on thousands of miles away that we have no influence on whatsoever.

I agree with most of that.

To be fair though, the Palestinians who voted for Hamas did so in 2006. That’s 20 years ago and they haven’t been allowed to vote since.

Polls suggest that Hamas is losing popularity since their Israel attack turned sour. But the people cannot vote them out if there are no democrats elections allowed.

No, people go on marches because our governments are giving money, weapons and enormous levels of political support to an extremely powerful country using that power to commit a genocide (or alleged genocide if you'd prefer) and apartheid. Many people are horrified and disgusted at mass killing that our countries are actively supporting. Luckily throughout history our people have a good record of standing up to mass atrocities and not permitting our Governments to stand with leaders who steal the lands of people and then kill them. People horrified by a genocide are not not, and neve have been, antisemitic. There is no definition of antisemitism that supports that.

"Not whining about things going on thousands of miles away"

What an exceptionally grim and offensive way to classify the mass killing of civilians. I share your horror at the way innocent Israelis were killed. It was a tragedy. It's awful that you view the butchering of Palestinians and people concerned at it as 'whining.' It sounds like you have different standards about which lives matter. I hope that's not the case.
