AIBU - problems with antisemitism amongst NHS medical staff?

Twiglets1 · 12/10/2026 06:32

The Campaign Against Antisemitism, a prominent UK watchdog group, has identified five healthcare professionals whose public statements it considers antisemitic or anti-Israel.

The five individuals, all current or former National Health Service employees, include midwife Fatimah Mohamied, who allegedly endorsed a post supporting Palestinian “resistance” on Oct. 7, 2023 by responding “Hell yeah!!!” to a post during the Hamas-led onslaught of October 7, 2023, that said: “Palestinians have a right to resist their occupation — we have a right to support them.”

Additionally, physician Dr. Abdelaal Ragheb Elfarra claimed Zionists control the media and the world; psychiatrist Dr. Ahmed Sewehli said regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “you need to be dead”; and emergency physician Dr. Nadeem Crowe described Israel as a “terrorist octopus.” Occupational therapist Zaida Akhtar allegedly shared a video appearing to encourage violence against Netanyahu’s son and a “false flag” claim about the Bondi Beach attack in Australia last year.

The allegations concerning the medical professionals follow a review published in June by John Mann, the British government’s independent adviser on antisemitism, which found “routine ostracism” of Jewish staff and patients within the NHS.

Jewish community representatives have warned that antisemitism in healthcare can affect patients at moments of particular vulnerability.

Karen Newman, a vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, described that concern during parliamentary testimony on May 14. She spoke about Jewish patients hesitating to request kosher meals after seeing a Palestinian badge on a nurse’s uniform.

“That is not a moment when you feel good asking for kosher meals,” she said.

Hard to tell tbe difference unfortunately. Especially when the first march in London after October 7th was organised by Hamas supporters.

Well that’s a bit like saying no one should be able to fly St George’s flag for football, or the Union Jack for the jubilee, because the right wing us it and it’s hard to tell the difference.

There seems to be a strange attempt on here to equate wearing a poppy (a tradition socially accepted by the majority of people in mainland Britain commemorating our own war dead) with wearing a badge supporting a terrorist organisation thousands of miles away which is leading our Jewish population to feel unsafe in hospital.

It is a strange argument and one that I expect most normal, sound people disagree with.

But obviously everyone has the freedom to express their own views however unpalatable.

Except you don't see how hypocritical you sound. You'll completely dismiss the feelings of one group of patients who would feel distressed by a symbol they experience as representing a military force who brutalised them, while using the same argument to ban Palestinian flags or watermelon pins. It's inconsistent. Also using our' as though the people you're dismissing aren't also British people, and British people don't have a homogenous opinion on these things. As has been said before, many medics are wearing symbols of solidarity for their dead healthcare colleagues killed while trying to do their job

I think that isn't allowed. You do know there is a difference between the symbol of tne state of Israel and symbols of the Jewsih faith?

Whats your point?

😂😂 of course I know that. I’ve been talking about Israel this whole time. It’s you who keeps trying to convince me I really Jewish people. Which I keep telling you I don’t.

People wearing a Palestinian flag are generally supporting the people of Palestine. Not Hamas. At least that is my experience.

I’m not talking about Jews as the religion or ethnicity. I am talking about israel. So maybe a small Israeli flag or pin?

YANBU. They shouldn't be allowed to wear badges for anything. Keep your politics off your work uniform, when serving the public.

Such as a religious symbol like the star of David? Can NHS workers wear crosses or a veil?

Anyway I thought the Gazan supporters argument was that they didnt have a problem with Jews?

Edited

Or are you also wanting to ban Islamic symbolism?

Except PP distinctly asked you about Israeli pins or badges or symbols, not religious Jewish items.

There's no such thing as Northern Irish Britons. Northern Ireland is not part of Britain (it is part of the UK though).

Northern Irish people might be living in England, Scotland or Wales but they are not British. They have their own health care system that is not part of the NHS.

Under the Good Friday Agreement, people born in Northern Ireland have the birthright to identify and be accepted as British, Irish, or both, and are legally entitled to hold British citizenship, Irish citizenship, or both.

Northern Ireland has a publicly funded healthcare system called Health and Social Care Northern Ireland (HSCNI), which is part of the broader United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) family

How would you feel if nhs staff were banned from wearing anything suggesting Israeli heritage or affiliation? Because Palestinians or others in the receiving end of Israel’s foreign policy may feel threatened or intimidated?

or would that be antisemitic?

Ah so we should ban political items that you personal consider to be political. That's not opening a can of worms at all! Does it occur to you northern Irish Britain's live in the rest of Britain too?

I dont think I was making "blanket policy". I was just expressing a view on MN regarding visible symbols showing support for Hamas should be (and are) banned as they show the wearer is perhaps malevolent towards Jews.

If you would like to argue that poppies are scaring people from N Ireland on the mainland in the same way then I suggest you start a thread on the issue.

I have no opinion. I have said that the ICJ are the correct body to determine whether a genocide has taken place and that can only be after due process has been followed. I express no view regarding settlements.

And they're the correct body who have demanded Israel carry out explicit measures to prevent genocide while they conduct their investigation, which have not been complied with.

Well yes and your view of which items you want to ban is completely subjective, so you don't want to ban visible political symbols you just want to ban one which I'm pointing out doesn't make any sense to expect to see actioned. I'm not arguing to ban poppies, because I understand the practicalities that there are multiple 'political' symbols allowed and encouraged within the NHS.

But what's your opinion on their judgements, you make it clear Israel may choose not to follow it, which we've all seen that they disregard international law..I'm asking your opinion on the preventative measures and on the judgement that the settlements are in breach of international law? What's your opinion on the ICC arrest warrants?

I don't believe there is such a thing as effective international law really. It only works if countries agree to follow it. So whether Israel follows any judgement is up to them. The ICJ has no standing army or means to enforce any judgement themselves.

If they accept the ICJ jurisdiction however then witness evidence will need to be collected regarding genocide. This will take a few years. If due process is followed rather than premature opinions then perhaps there will be a proper ruling that other countries can then bear in mind in their dealings witb Israel.

You're being disingenuous to act like you care about patients feelings or distress but repeatedly dismiss the feelings of patients you happen to disagree with, just because the complicated feelings they have towards their dead relatives, aren't shared by you.

I disagree.

Dontmakemethinkofanotherbloodyusername · 13/10/2026 15:17

To be clear, do you consider the ICJ opinion of the highest importance? If so, What's your opinion on them issuing measures to Israel to prevent genocide while they investigate and their ruling that Israeli settlements are illegal under international always and that Israel must end it's illegal occupation. Do you agree that Israel are in breach of the ICJ ruling, considering you only want their opinion of it's a genocide ?
