AIBU - problems with antisemitism amongst NHS medical staff?

Twiglets1 · 12/10/2026 06:32

The Campaign Against Antisemitism, a prominent UK watchdog group, has identified five healthcare professionals whose public statements it considers antisemitic or anti-Israel.

The five individuals, all current or former National Health Service employees, include midwife Fatimah Mohamied, who allegedly endorsed a post supporting Palestinian “resistance” on Oct. 7, 2023 by responding “Hell yeah!!!” to a post during the Hamas-led onslaught of October 7, 2023, that said: “Palestinians have a right to resist their occupation — we have a right to support them.”

Additionally, physician Dr. Abdelaal Ragheb Elfarra claimed Zionists control the media and the world; psychiatrist Dr. Ahmed Sewehli said regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “you need to be dead”; and emergency physician Dr. Nadeem Crowe described Israel as a “terrorist octopus.” Occupational therapist Zaida Akhtar allegedly shared a video appearing to encourage violence against Netanyahu’s son and a “false flag” claim about the Bondi Beach attack in Australia last year.

The allegations concerning the medical professionals follow a review published in June by John Mann, the British government’s independent adviser on antisemitism, which found “routine ostracism” of Jewish staff and patients within the NHS.

Jewish community representatives have warned that antisemitism in healthcare can affect patients at moments of particular vulnerability.

Karen Newman, a vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, described that concern during parliamentary testimony on May 14. She spoke about Jewish patients hesitating to request kosher meals after seeing a Palestinian badge on a nurse’s uniform.

“That is not a moment when you feel good asking for kosher meals,” she said.

Organised groups of Jewish people join the marches. Do their views not count either?

Are you going to respond to the point about ignoring Hamas when you attribute blame for the horrific state of Gaza?

And other Jewish people have said they find the marches intimidating and they avoid city centres when marches are taking place.

Lots of people avoid city centres when marches happen for all sorts of courses.

Of course society is upset, what is happening in Gaza is horrific and that’s not the fault of protestors but Israel and Netanyahu.

Edited

You ignore Hamas and that is part of the problem, people often do.

What is happening in Gaza is horrific, and that is the fault of both Hamas and the Israel government.

I never said British citizens can't voice the above that is obviously personal choice/free speech.

I just don't think it has achieved anything for people living in Gaza/West Bank.

And it has caused a lot of upset in UK society and helped flame the rise in antisemitism in the UK.

It educates, keeps the atrocities in the public eye and stops them from being forgotten, it illustrates strong feeling to our government, it is a sign of free speech and democracy, it gives hope to those suffering in Gaza, it tells those carrying atrocities that the world is watching…

I don’t want any of our taxes going to Israel behaving as they are, I want our government to work harder at trying to stop the atrocities, I want our government to put pressure on Netanyahu and I want the atrocities to stop.

Who are you to say that British citizens can’t or shouldn’t voice the above?

What has all the marching & demonstrations actually achieved for the people of Gaza?

"People go on marches etc for one of two reasons. Either they’re caught up in the whole virtue signalling of it and don’t really understand what antisemitism is, or they’re nasty little antisemites. Either way it’s grim."

No, people go on marches because our governments are giving money, weapons and enormous levels of political support to an extremely powerful country using that power to commit a genocide (or alleged genocide if you'd prefer) and apartheid. Many people are horrified and disgusted at mass killing that our countries are actively supporting. Luckily throughout history our people have a good record of standing up to mass atrocities and not permitting our Governments to stand with leaders who steal the lands of people and then kill them. People horrified by a genocide are not not, and neve have been, antisemitic. There is no definition of antisemitism that supports that.

"Not whining about things going on thousands of miles away"

What an exceptionally grim and offensive way to classify the mass killing of civilians. I share your horror at the way innocent Israelis were killed. It was a tragedy. It's awful that you view the butchering of Palestinians and people concerned at it as 'whining.' It sounds like you have different standards about which lives matter. I hope that's not the case.

Completely agree. It is terrible how some people appear to view other people's lives as being worth less. Absolutely disgusting. Also seemingly deliberately overlooking the actual reasons as to why people attend marches and demonstrations. There is no explaining to individuals who are so fixed in their apparent beliefs. It is an extremely sad time without a doubt.

This is really offensive.

All this attention on Gaza only stems from an obsession with the only Jewish state.

This for example. People are not obsessed with Israel. They are shocked by the the scale of destruction meted out to the men, women and children in Gaza. This is a good thing. Surely you would prefer a world in which people are stunned and repulsed by that?

There is no genocide happening

You can argue the toss on language or legal meanings of genocide. But - we can all agree that way too many people have died.

I realise that I don’t see a future for myself as a British Jew here in the UK

This is indeed a pity.

Well said

We trade with countries because our economy is even more f’d than it currently is if we don’t. People in Palestine are being attacked because their rulers - Hamas - butchered Israelis in the most hideous possible way. Palestinians voted for Hamas. make if that what you will.

Buy this fighting is miles away. There is nothing we as a nation can do or say that will make the slightest iota of difference. People go on marches etc for one of two reasons. Either they’re caught up in the whole virtue signaling of it and don’t really understand what antisemitism is, or they’re nasty little antisemites. Either way it’s grim. We need to focus efforts on making changes that improve OUR country, not whining about things going on thousands of miles away that we have no influence on whatsoever.

I agree with most of that.

To be fair though, the Palestinians who voted for Hamas did so in 2006. That’s 20 years ago and they haven’t been allowed to vote since.

Polls suggest that Hamas is losing popularity since their Israel attack turned sour. But the people cannot vote them out if there are no democrats elections allowed.

Apparently we can only be shocked by people suffering when the countries involved are ones the West trades with or gives a lot of money to.

Doesn’t feel quite right morally speaking but it conveniently explains all the focus on the Israel/Palestine conflict.

When the person in question ONLY criticises Israel over and over and never shows a wider concern for other conflicts/suffering, then it’s a pretty safe bet that the person is consciously or otherwise antisemitic.

Do these healthcare workers also post about the suffering and atrocities in Sudan? The persecution of the Uigyurs by China? Are they posting death to Xi Jinping? Or Putin? Are they raising awareness of the persecution of Christians by Muslims in Nigeria?

Or is it just they have an obsession where there’s a Jew to blame?

There’s no place for racism in the NHS and all UK citizens have a right to be treated fairly and without prejudice. I’m surprised and extremely disappointed that anyone would think differently.

But Palestine was a British Protectorate at the time Israel was created, and the Balfour Agreement is a British document. Isn’t it the case that we have a unique historical connection & even accountability to what’s happening in Gaza and the West Bank? Isn’t that the difference?

We can all agree I’m sure that way too many people have died.

People who say it’s genocide tend to not like it when others express the opposite opinion - that it’s not genocide.

That’s why I prefer to call it alleged genocide until the court decides. Though some don’t like that either as they think they know better than to wait for the verdict in a hugely complex court case that will take years to study all the evidence for & against the charge of genocide.

If they aren't also concerned about the massive levels of violence happening elsewhere in the world and only concentrate on Gaza then I assume anti semitism I'm afraid. Can't pick and chose your concern.

We, the EU and the US give massive amounts of money and favourable trade deals to Israel, so we can absolutely choose our concern.

We do not give the same favour to say - Somalia.

I don’t want to come across as dramatic but the more I read threads like this and a similar one last week the more I realise that I don’t see a future for myself as a British Jew here in the UK. The constant “it’s not anti semitism it’s anti Zionism” line is getting tired. All this attention on Gaza only stems from an obsession with the only Jewish state. There is no genocide happening and to be fair I don’t blame most on here for their views because if I were getting my news from the BBC or Sky I’d probably think the same. It’s just pathetic really how so many are so blind to the changing face of antisemitism.

There is no place for racism in the NHS or any other institution. No one should ever be afraid of requesting Kosher meals. It's a good think that badges are banned and I would certainly hoped that that has been extended to any political symbol and it's not just targeting Palestinian workers. No one NHS worker should make a political statement to a patient by wearing a badge.

Our governments are actively supporting the genocide taking place in Gaza and the apartheid in the West Bank. We're giving weapons and political support. There is widespread support for the actions of the Israeli Government among our politicians, the media and the community. Many attempts to raise concerns and support the people in Gaza and the Westbank are shut down as antisemitic. This is very different than other conflicts where we are not actively supporting the genocide by providing weapons and money. The idea that being horrified at a genocide is antisemitic is deeply problematic.

knitnerd90 · 12/10/2026 07:55

You're not likely to get good answers on here. It's all going to be "what about Israel?" And I don't support the Israeli government at all.

Dr Rameh Aladwan (who was suspended) has gone absolutely mask off on her twitter. We're talking conspiracy theories about the Talmud.

certainly you can criticise Israel without being an antisemite. But there's an experience I've had more than once (as a British-American Jew) of people bringing up the conflict in a pointed way, knowing I'm Jewish, looking for my reaction.

I did once experience antisemitism on the NHS but I couldn't have proved it. I have a very obviously Jewish surname and at the time lived in a very Jewish part of north London. I was questioning th midwife about some test results, and she said something about how I was being very inquisitive (not the exact word she used, I can't remember it now) and then "but you people always are" and I knew precisely what she was referring to.

But there's an experience I've had more than once (as a British-American Jew) of people bringing up the conflict in a pointed way, knowing I'm Jewish, looking for my reaction.

I know exactly what that looks like @knitnerd90 as my sil is Irish and got it a lot in the 90s in London. Awful - almost a "declare yourself."

I don't think criticising netanyahu is racist. Also you've given a sample of 5, several of which don't even seem to be about Jewish people they are about the political actions by the Israeli government, there are tens of thousands of people turning for the NHS, will some of them be racist. Yes, it's inevitable. Does that mean the NHS has a problem with anti-Semitism, no.

1.5 million people work for the NHS.

Finding 5?
