How is your household utilising AI to your benefit? Looking for some inspo

I’ve been using ChatGPT (paid) for 2 years, this week I spoke to somebody who’s got a 2nd brain. (Collects all data from multiple sources) and is totally customised to them. Totally opened my eyes to what we can achieve

It's a pretty important skill to have - being able to formulate your own thoughts instead of having a computer "form them for you!"
Then writing something down like an email and pretending to be you.
Like you're trying to validate yourself, and not trusting your own judgement and need somebody else to think for you.
Your post is so depressing, people really are losing the ability or confidence to think for themselves without being "told" what to think, or being able to compose something by themselves, aren't they?!

I'm perfectly capable of writing an email, just as I'm perfectly capable of mowing my own 1.75 acre lawn but I pay someone else do do that for me because I have better things to do with my time. Does that mean I've forgotten how to operate a lawn mower or lack confidence in my grass-cutting abilities? 😂 People use tools and outsource tasks because it's convenient, not because they're incapable of doing them themselves, I just don't feel the need to spend twenty minutes typing an email or almost three hours mowing my lawn them out when when I can get AI or a lawn service to do it for me and frankly, if you're genuinely not intelligent enough to understand that distinction, all the email writing practice in the world isn't going to help you much but congratulations on composing your own emails. I'm sure it's a tremendous source of personal pride.

"I'm perfectly capable of writing an email" - but yet can't be arsed to write it out yourself.
It's lazy, and it's not even comparable to mowing the lawn.
Communication is an invaluable asset to have, and you, yourself are not conversing as an actual human, you're getting a computer to do it for you.
It comes across as you can't write for yourself, or have your individual thoughts.
If you don't get that it's not the same as pushing a lawnmower around, it's a bit rich talking about intelligence levels in others.

AhBiscuits · Today 14:37

In my case it's definitely not a case of can't be bothered. I work in a volume environment and AI has become essential to keep up with the workload. I can say to Copilot
Check all emails and files including reference 1234 and draft an email to the client with an update. Please also explain. X, y, z.
It turns a 20 minute job into a 1 minute job. Sadly I cannot spend 20 minutes on an email without falling behind. It's the world we're living in now.

Okay, fine, let's use another example since the lawnmower comparison clearly went straight your head. My husband is a web developer who makes over $200k a year, and guess what? He uses AI at work. His company actually pays his subscription so what, Is he suddenly incapable of writing code or thinking for himself despite having done it for twenty years? Is his employer paying him that much money just to be lazy, or is it possible that intelligent, capable people use tools to save time and work more efficiently? Nobody is claiming writing an email and mowing a lawn require the same skills. The point is that being capable of doing something doesn't mean you have to do every part of it manually and he fact that you still can't grasp that distinction while questioning my intelligence is actually pretty funny.

OhTheCowsInTheMeadowGoMoo · Today 14:54

Keep on trying to justify yourself, that's what's pretty funny.

pinck · Today 15:08

Lol, I'm not trying to justify anything. You're the one who seems personally offended that other people know how to use technology. Look, AI isn't going anywhere, and refusing to adapt isn't the intellectual flex you seem to think it is. When the rest of the world has moved on and you're still sitting there congratulating yourself for doing everything the hard way, I'm sure that sense of intellectual superiority will come in handy. 💀

chirrupybird · Today 15:09

It's good for generic things where the top answers are probably the ones you want, if you want something very specific or relatively new information, it can take a long time to guide it to what you are actually looking for and it often tells me I am wrong until it figures out I'm right. Non routine investments it can be very out of date suggesting things that failed years ago or look on their last legs to me. Generic recipes fine, financial advise or recent technical things keep well clear. It just churns out stuff that may be years out of date or not applicable.

OhTheCowsInTheMeadowGoMoo · Today 15:26

RikthePoet · 04/10/2026 13:34

I think so many of these use cases must be for really thick or incurious people.

Honestly, who needs an AI to suggest what to eat from the food in their fridge or what to wear from the clothes in their wardrobe?

If I want a weekend break within 3 hours drive, I look at a map. It's really easy.

And if I asked an AI, and it suggested five places, I'd want to look at a map to check where they were. And I wouldn't want to read the dead bullet-pointed prose of an LLM telling me about them, especially because, as you say, they make stuff up.

Exactly, it can come out with utter bollocks and people won't bother to fact check, they'll take it as granted "because AI told me."
My phone has started doing the whole "thinking" AI crap if you try googling something - it'll say "thinking" 🙄 and then gives you an answer..(doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off)
Sad thing is that people (probably those on here trying to justify their sending their thoughts to AI to "help me formulate what I want to say as I can't be bothered to do it myself" types) would just take it as gospel.
I googled for example "is this pub at the train station" and the AI confidently told me, yes it was and I knew full well that it was nowhere bloody near and the "facts" it was spouting was utter nonsense.
It's all very well making AI look stuff up for you and it regurgitating back at you what it's "read" online, but that will include mistakes as well. People are losing the ability to fact check and think for themselves.

Natsku · Today 16:01

Persephonia1966 · Today 01:08

My handwritings terrible but I write shopping lists etc by hand because it helps me remember what I need to buy (when I inevitably forget the actual list). For revision etc rewriting notes by hand is a more effective way of learning them than just re-reading. For work I would always send emails/type things out though as I wouldn't inflict my writing on others.

I had a lot of exams a few years ago, I basically rewrote all the study material in my own words by hand into notebooks and that was the best revision I could ever have done, really made everything stick in my brain well. But also terrible handwriting so rereading what I had written was quite difficult!

Natsku · Today 16:04

This thread is equal parts depressing and reassuring - depressing how so many people are outsourcing their thinking to AI, and reassuring how so many people aren't. Thankfully I do not have to use it at work, and I refuse to use it in my free time except when its unavoidable (and I avoid as much as possible e.g. switching to duck duck go from google and turning off all AI options I can turn off on my browser).

My tax return. Dozens of straightforward but boring and repetitive calculations done in 30 seconds instead of entire evening.

Itinerary for 3 country Asian trip

Meal plans/ shopping lists

Random shower thought questions that I can’t find an answer to on Google

How did it help with your tax return?I really struggle with mine. I just do not have a mathematical mind whatsoever!

Because as I already said, they wouldn’t be paying him that much if he were lazy and incapable of doing his job and I mentioned the size of the yard because it’s huge which explains why we don’t feel like maintaining it ourselves and on the flip side, I’m still not sure why OhTheCowsInTheMeadowGoMoo felt the need to tell me how many journals she owns and exactly where she keeps the considering that is not at all relevant to anything. Come on now, some of y’all are really lacking in basic comprehension skills and it shows. 😂

OooPourUsACupLove · Today 16:22

Kind of amused that people are worried we are making our brains go soft using AI without any idea what we are doing with our brains while AI is doing its thing.

I'm outsourcing the things I can add least value to so I can use my brain on other things. Usually this is working out what the important questions actually are and what I need to know to answer them. Then I ask the AI to find out for me and most importantly include its sources and explain why it chose them.

If he keeps using AI to do his work then they won't be paying him that much for much longer. Using AI to do your work is just working to the end of your job, horrible if you don't have a choice to not use it, stupid if you do have a choice.

Waitingfordoggo · Today 16:30

I think you might mean me with your reference to ‘journals’. I mentioned my notebooks earlier, but I do agree with you that’s not really relevant, just like your financial status isn’t really relevant. The difference, I suppose, is that one of them is a bit of a brag and the other one isn’t. At any rate, you’ve already been rude to me about my earlier post, so I don’t think you need to do it again; your tone is quite unpleasant. Perhaps AI could help you find a more suitable register for online discussions.

Happyher · Today 16:43

So far I’ve used chat gpt to help me plan a new garden bed, help with home accessories styling as I’m not that good at it. Alter a selfie photo background so it’s suitable for a passport photo and am now using it with a paid subscription to help initially prepare a claim on behalf my son for unfair dismissal due to disability. I will seek proper legal advice at the right time but it’s saved me a fortune with the preliminary stuff, such as prompt notes for meetings, analysing documents and writing letters. Also suggests recipes when you only have certain ingredients

BCBird · Today 16:44

I am.new to my area. When I had to go to multiple places I asked AI to plan route in a logical manner do I wasn't doubling back on myself. I use it occasionally.

Um, no. My husband is 40 and has been working in web development for 20 years, do you seriously think his job is exactly the same today as it was when he started? He's spent his entire career learning new technologies and adapting to changes to keep himself relevant, and AI is just the latest development. He knows how to code perfectly well without AI but he uses it to handle tedious busywork so he can focus on other things that actually require his expertise. He still does plenty of work himself, and he's even experimenting with AI on his own time and building a little robot for his home office.

Companies still need people who understand what they're doing, especially since AI obviously makes mistakes and someone needs to recognize and correct them, not to mention, it takes technical knowledge and experience to use AI correctly and effectively in the first place. There are also robots that assist with certain surgeries now. Do you think that means surgeons are suddenly worth less because technology helps them do their jobs?

And considering the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects software developer employment to grow nearly 16% over the next decade, I'm not particularly concerned that knowing how to use AI is going to make him unemployable. His job will undoubtedly look different in another 10 or 15 years just as it looks different now than it did 20 years ago. That's how technology works. The idea that refusing to use new tools somehow makes you more valuable than someone who knows how to adapt is honestly ridiculous.

I'd lay off the basic comprehension skills jab if you are as.... ummm.....
😂

SmallDFartyCarNRG · Today 17:18

I find myself using the free Gemini one (begrudgingly) because google has now become so shit.
I look up plants, how big they get (pictures are always just the leaf or flower rather than the full mature plant which drives me bonkers), preferred soils and locations. I don't use it for travel unless I really can't find other info as it has been very wrong with where things are and bus numbers in the past (presume using old data not updated from a web page somewhere).

I do a first pass with AI then look further into what it has said to double check as it often screws up things I luckily do know about, so I am wary of trusting it 100%

You should try AI. It would never mix up two random strangers on the internet.
