Do you need to make friends with reception parents .?

My son has just started Reception, and I’m wondering how important it is for parents to get to know the other mums/dads.
I’m 26 and quite shy, so I sometimes feel a bit awkward around the other parents. We all wait outside the classroom and I usually just smile or say hello. Some parents don’t really respond, and sometimes I get the impression that people are looking at me or judging me, although I might just be overthinking it.
Does making friends with other parents actually make a difference to children’s friendships, settling into school or arranging playdates? Or is it completely fine to just be polite and let the children make their own friendships naturally?
Should I make more effort to get to know the other parents, or just leave things to happen naturally?

My eldest is 25 and the friends I made amongst the reception parents are some of my closest mates.
We all meet up regularly, go away together. Despite our children going to different secondary schools, the kids are still friends as well.
The benefits of play dates, lift sharing to endless sporting events and emergency pick ups etc made the primary years much easier. We all worked as well.

I didn’t make friends with any school moms, would say hello and maybe have a chat with some who were local to us but didn’t meet up or do play dates, but I am autistic so would’ve found that really hard. Dd is starting reception next year so I’m not looking forward to doing school runs again 😫

We moved to our town just before my boy started pre school. We didn't know anyone so I was keen to make friends.

Turns out, they way I have managed to make a good group of school mum friends is through a sports club I joined. All our kids are in the same year group at school but they aren't friends.

I do make a big effort to host playdates for my sons friends and are friendly with their parents but I don't do one on one socialising with them.

On a whole our year is very social and there are plenty of class coffee mornings, end of term drinks evenings etc.
