To think that dating is not worth the effort anymore?

I’ve been single for 4 years (58 F) and have been scared to try dating apps by all the negative stuff I’ve heard about them and the safety issues of meeting a stranger. A friend did meet her partner this way, but she had dates with 70 different men before she met him! I couldn’t stomach that.

I was married for 25 years & I’ve never in my life dated someone I didn’t already know. Instead I’ve tried social groups, sports events and volunteering where I thought I might meet someone organically. I even considered dating women, but that sadly is not my vibe. I love them but not romantically.

I feel infected by what seems to be the attitude of many single women (and the decentre men movement & the South Korea 4B movement) that dating is not worth the effort and that relationships, when you are in one, mean that the woman gives so much more than the man, it’s easier to be alone.

Am I right to give up on dating? Or am I missing something that is still worth persuing.

For those who feel like me, what would have to change for you to feel enthusiastic about meeting someone again?

YABU - there’s still a lot to be gained from dating and relationships
YANBU - just give up already.

I have not heard of the South Korean 4B movement.

If my current relationship ends I won’t be bothering. Society wants women to believe that being single is terrible. It isn’t.

I have not heard of the South Korean 4B movement.

its basically - no dating men, no sex with men, no heterosexual marriage and no childbirth.
Childbirth rates in South Korea are massively down, leading to concerns for future population. (I assuming there will be no “youngs” to look after the “olds”

Then don't date, there's no law to say you have to. You can do what ever you want.

Marycontrarygarden · Yesterday 17:50

Honey, I have an amazing partner and father to my child, genuinely does 50% if not more.

I still miss being single......yep.

LondonLass61 · Yesterday 17:51

I feel the same tbh - I do like men as friends, but I’ll never give one the key to my front door again.

The two are not linked. The last time I saw this topic came up a few years ago, there were only about 400 members out of a female population of 25 million!

Dating isn't mandatory.

Would you start a thread asking if you're being unreasonable to give up eating sandwiches? 🤷‍♂️

If it's not for you then don't do it.

Personally, I'm only dating to build a family. I'm very upfront about my intentions from the start. If the guy I'm currently seeing backtracks on this, I will dump him so fast he'll get whiplash.

Outside of that: no other reason to date. You can get a man round for sex any time you want. But a relationship is hard work and in my view, not worth the headache if you don't need the other person there 24/7 to help raise children (and walk dogs).

To be honest it sounds like you're wanting reassurance.

It is OK not to date, to be single and find happiness in that life. You will be OK, and will be happy.

Good luck

I am also not keen to use dating apps . I think it would be really soul destroying and not great for self confidence . I really dislike the idea of swiping left etc . It all seems very transactional . I do get that there must be some nice / decent men on there but I am not prepared to trawl through all the frogs to find the prince .

It would be great to meet some lovely man in the real world , who was kind and thoughtful . But I really don’t have a lifestyle where that seems feasible , so not holding out much hope for that .
I have my kids and a pet , life is lonely at times . But I am not desperate for a companion so will just plod on . I have also considered that a woman would be ideal too !

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · Yesterday 19:01

For me I just don’t have the time or energy. Or even really the inclination to be with someone else.

I think I would if I was bothered enough.

Idk, maybe when my kids leave home I might find I have the brain space for it but it’s just not a priority for me.

I met someone at 52 on the apps. 2nd date so no where near 70. I’m very much enjoying it, although also had a very happy and fulfilled life single (with my 2 DC’s) for 6 years. Having someone there for and with you is a lovely addition.

Huckleberries · Yesterday 19:48

@Intsywintsyspider I am puzzled that you use the word infected

If you don’t want to date, that’s fine

I never really was interested, came to the realisation that I would like to meet someone around the age of 50 LOL

Not prepared to date online

Also, it’s more about companionship
And for me, domestics, I would like in theory to have somebody to share all the house and garden and cooking stuff with because I think it would be fun more fun with someone else

we’d have to buy a bigger house together and stuff. There’s no way I’m giving up my financial assetsv to someone else.

Being on here is an eye-opener because you would think that men aren’t domesticated at all although the men I’ve dated are quite domesticated

Anyway, someone mentioned a companionship website and I’ve just realised I totally forgot to look it up

It’s actually not really that important to me, I don’t know… now I do wonder if I met someone in real life, what would happen because it would have to actually go really smoothly and then there’s all the financial issues to sort out

so if you don’t wanna date, don’t date

I hardly dated before I met my DH. I married in my early 20s, and we've been together 25 years. I have no experience living alone. If something were to happen to him, I think I'd feel satisfied with the romance I've had and not interested in pursuing another romantic relationship (though obviously you can't know for certain until you're in that position). However, I believe I would struggle without the daily, built-in companionship and sharing of the load, both mental and practical. When DH is away for some reason, my life feels so much more difficult without his presence and contributions. I'm a bit scared of what life would be like without him—but ultimately I'd 'just' have to adapt and find a way to make it work. I'd need to develop a more active social life to fill in some of the emptiness and silence. I'm an introvert, happy in my own company, but most of us still need companionship and time around other people.

In your place, I wouldn't shut down the idea of dating, but you don't have to actively and consistently seek out dates. Instead, I would take a break and see what happens and how you feel in another few months. You may meet someone organically when you least expect it, or you might find your second wind and decide to start looking again.
