The second hand clothes market is dead.

I’ve stuck with eBay for selling clothes. It’s still doing well, over £1500 sales since January.

Any old packaging. Even a plastic bag. Bit of brown tape and you’re good to go. I reuse all the packaging my Vinted purchases come in.

Charity shops near me are doing brilliantly. My mum volunteers at an animal based one, and I gave them a bunch of clothes about two weeks ago, and I’ve been asked if I had anymore.
I don’t trust Vinted, so I get my clothes via EBay, Charity shops, Etsy, and a couple of specific retailers - no problems here!

A lot of the good stuff goes to eBay, never tried vinted

My teens buy and sell a lot on Vinted, my teen daughter has expensive taste (Holland Cooper, Ralph Lauren) and picked up a Holland Cooper coat for £35 - she rarely buys new now. Luckily she never really got into the Temu, Shien stuff after a couple of bad buys she now is quite specific on what she wants and always looks on Vinted first. My son also buys a lot of under armour and Nike.

Both of them have also made a fortune selling her old stuff.

Ive had a few bargains on Vinted a Canada Goose coat for £180 (paid for the authenticity check) and a pair of boots which will go on forever.

The problem is when people want near new prices for 2nd stuff - eBay tends to be full of things like that.

I far & away prefer ebay, but I am old & live too far to be bothered to find the ridiculous pickup options.

I love Vinted, both as a buyer and seller. I sell books for €1; I’m not paying for postage, nor packaging, so it all adds up. I buy most of my school reading and text books from Vinted, and sell afterwards. I’m mindful of the buyer protection premium and postage, and take that into account when both buying and selling.

Made €500 so far this year. Every year I buy myself one beautiful item with my Vinted earnings.

Are you being realistic on price?

Just be careful of fakes on Vinted.

Their authentication service is famously worthless (you can read user experiences on Reddit), and with some brands almost all the new with tags' listings are simply and clearly fake. Nike, Birkenstock, Dr Martens, K18 hair products, Ralph Lauren, Carhartt etc etc clothes - if you know your stuff, you can see so, so many of the listings are for fakes. It filters down into the used items as well - if someone wears a fake, and of course finds it does not fit properly or starts to disintegrate, then they sell it on. So buying second hand is no guarantee that an item is not counterfeit either.

Vinted is run by and moderated by AI bots. If you have an issue with fakes then it is impossible to get hold of an actual person to deal with it even if you have taken your fake Chanel bag or whatever into a store and had them write a note confirming it.

I’ve bought and sold on eBay for years - mainly used children’s clothing but also just about anything that is no longer wanted - books, toys, furniture, footwear, unwanted gifts/ new items where I changed my mind etc. For used children’s clothing I tend to do bundles. I only sell at buy it now, not auction and just bag/box it up and store it until it sells. At any one time I’ve probably got about 50 listings in various categories and several boxes of stuff in the spare room,
Fees: EBay got rid of the upfront fee for selling in most categories several years ago. The buyer pays a fee for buying off a private seller which is calculated by eBay and added to the price they see automatically. Usually I allow buyers to make an offer on the price. Postage is easy - I choose the size and weight of package and eBay calculates the postage cost for me, to be paid by the buyer.
Haven’t bothered with Vinted as I’m already well established with eBay and it’s easier to have everything in one place.

No, I have listed plenty and I've never stolen anything in my life.

Will be mostly items I've bought in advance in a sale and forgotten about until it's too late (kids clothing) or items given to us that we've not wanted.

Urgh so agree that the search functions are pretty useless! It’s something I always did like about eBay that it was very tweakable! I’ve started buying clothes for my girlie that I’ve noticed don’t depreciate from their sale price (mini rodini for one) so that selling them is just getting money back! That and 90s baby clothes from Adam’s and st Michael. But yeah she’s been given clothing that were not in to and they just won’t sell. Hope you find your perfect trousers!

Did you have interest? Maybe your prices were too high?
I love vinted and got a lot of items that I saw on ebay for 400-800% more, no one is paying those prices.

I hate Vinted. Buying and selling. Unused to buy/sell loads on eBay. I’ve tried Vinted and some selling and buying. Buying isn’t too bad apart from their rubbish search options, but selling is a nightmare. Someone always chooses the one postage option that is an absolute PITA from where I live and there there is nothing I seem to be able to do about it. Then they allow ridiculous offers which mean then have to spend my time declining them. And then to get things to actually sell I have to reduce the price so low it isn’t worth my energy to post it.

I would much rather send stuff to a charity shop now, at least they might get a semi decent amount for it with no hassle to me.

I do ok on Vinted, I could sell faster if I made things cheaper but my second hand stuff tends to be new with tags or hardly worn.

I put my higher end rarer bits on Ebay & sell them for more.

Vinted customer service is pretty crap & there are a lot of fakes on there

@MandemChickenShop I only take the tag off once I have worn an item and sometimes I dont wear stuff plus I worked in fashion for years so loads of sample sales.

But you can turn off the postal options that don’t work for you in your settings — I didn’t realise that initially (I’ve only been selling for a fortnight), and ended up having to trek to distant drop off points twice, but now I’ve turned off all options other than the post in my settings, as I live almost next door to a PO.

Definitely dead unless you've got something highly sought after.

With all the money the founders made, it would be nice if they could spend some on proper customer support.

And prior to ebay, nice things would have been snapped up at charity shops, and prior to that, nice things would have been handed down / given away.

The second-hand clothes market is not dead, it's just evolved (again).

You don't have to respond to offers.

Having said that I did a big clear out a couple of years ago and don't bother any more. Just bag it all up and take to charity shop. I did sell a lot of board games, proper nerdy ones.
