To think winning £110M overnight would solve a lot of problems but bring a whole set of new ones?

Someone in the UK won £110M last night and I was just thinking about how they’re feeling this morning.

All your money worries are gone, you can buy a nice house, quit your job etc.

But I wonder if those problems are replaced with new ones. Some people in your life might be jealous. Or expect handouts and get angry about who gets what.

And then your DC. Do you tell them they still need to do their homework? That they’ll still need to have a job/career one day?

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be great, I'm just wondering if it swaps one set of problems for another.

Can I be honest, I’d hate it. Don’t get me wrong, I’d LOVE a lottery win. All that money to help my family out and lead a better life. But that much money would freak me out. Just a few million would be great.

If I went in now and told my DD we’d won the lottery, I can guarantee she would put down her A level coursework and refuse to ever pick it up again. But I can’t work out if that would be OK or not.

I think that’s a bit sad and strange. I’ve a few friends/acquaintances with this level of wealth (although it’s been passed down to them through generations or earned rather than won) and all their children are still expected to be high achievers, go to top universities and have meaningful careers.

Oh I know a phenomenal small charity that does amazing research that would be able to really push boundaries I would donate a big chunk to them and the rest I’d pay off mortgages and pay school fees etc for family. I’d invest the rest rather than spend. I’d family trusts for children’s education. Money would help privately treat my mum who has an advanced cancer.

I think one should be careful of donating a large amount to a small charity. They wouldn’t have the infrastructure to deal with it and it could cause a lot of problems.

Can you imagine just existing for the rest of your days with no real purpose? I appreciate I’m lucky that I (mostly) enjoy my job but days and days of wafting around being rich sounds lovely for a week or 2 but then a bit dull.

Good grief- can you really not imagine doing anything with your spare time apart from working for an employer? 😱

I can think of soooo many things I'd do if I didnt have to work and had millions. I'd start a charity for a cause close to my heart, I'd volunteer, I'd do a degree in philosophy (which ive always wanted to do!), I'd adopt the oldest sickest dogs from shelters who nobody wanted, I'd set up scholarships for kids who couldn't afford universities, I'd travel and see the world and different cultures, I'd run a marathon, I'd spend time drawing and painting, I'd write a novel, etc etc

I find it so sad that literally the only things people can ever think to do in life is work 🙄. There is nothing wrong with enjoying your job- thats a good thing but to say you literally cannot think of anything at all to do outside of it is just...sad.

Exactly! I could “fill my days” with absolutely no problem at all and do so many fun and meaningful enriching things.
Feeling like lottery winners should have to pass a test before they get their winnings 😂 can you describe 10 great things you’ll do?!
