Looking after neighbours suitcase

ShakyBake · 25/09/2026 21:52

Neighbour of ours, friendly known her for about 7 years is off on holiday next week.
We were talking about it over the wall yesterday and informed me she will be taking 3 cases and would it be ok if I keep the suitcases (packed) in my living room until the morning she gets picked up. I said yes of course and didn't ask why. My husband doesn't understand why we need to keep them here. I said don't be silly we are neighbours and it's the right thing to do. That's not unreasonable is it?

OP posts:

Such nonsense. No one in their right mind is going to ask their neighbour to keep their packed holiday suitcases in their home without explanation. No one being asked to is going to agree without explanation.

I'm also intrigued as to why she specifically asked you to store them "in your living room"🤔

Perhaps it is the only room with carpets so she knows that the cases will pick up fibres. Should she be caught smuggling drugs/weapons/explosives or dumping her husbands body parts, she can pin the blame on OP and there will be evidence to back up her claim. 🤔

Shes in her 70's and I said to my husband we should be helping and just had a blazing row. I'll ask her tomorrow and update them as I'm fed up with this and just trying to be neighbourly

I'd be too suspicious to agree to this profoundly odd request OP.

If it is all innocent, it shouldn't inconvenience her to have it at her own home.

BibbityBoppityTwo · Yesterday 01:24

Clearly it’s odd. I don’t think my DH would be impressed if I agreed to store three packed suitcases belonging to a neighbour.

If she is trying to escape a dangerous situation then of course I’d help, but I’d be asking her if that’s the case. It’s not a remotely normal request so there’s clearly something going on here. The fact she’s 70 would make me no less concerned.

What if she's smuggling drugs and when she gets caught she says the suitcase was at yours and you must have packed them?

Drugs was my first thought too. Glad it's not just me and my usual overthinking! 😁

Don't do this. Because dont they ask at customs did you pack it yourself and has anyone had access to your case. Suppose she was smuggling drugs then she could say you put them in the suitcase. Sounds very very dodgy.

This
probarly not the reason but
I would wash it down all over to get my finger prints off it and when you give it back to her in the morning hold the handle with a tea towel or something 😂. & say you cant have it any longer as no room / having vistors or something.

Every drug smuggler who gets caught ever says this though.

This is the most bizarre thread I’ve seen on MN this week.
Why would anyone wish to leave their packed suitcases with a neighbour?
why does the neighbour need so many cases - is she embarking on a six-moth round the world cruise?
Why would you say yes to such a frankly ridiculous request?
Why didn’t you ask your neighbour why she thought you’d want to babysit her luggage?

Completely bonkers.

This made me really laugh out loud 😂😂

is she embarking on a six-moth round the world cruise?

Please come back @ShakyBake we're all dying to know...

maxslice · Yesterday 02:59

MistressMerkin · 25/09/2026 21:54

Whut?

Why can't she keep her luggage in her own house til she gets picked up? It's a seriously weird request.

It doesn’t matter why. If it doesn’t inconvenience you or your husband, I don’t see the problem. It’s an odd request, but even more odd to object to it. Be nice, OP, and tell DH to spend his attention on something more worthwhile.

Who takes 3 suitcases on holiday at 70?

People like me who overpack no matter how hard we try not to to.

Yetone · 25/09/2026 23:11

Do you really want the cases in your living room? I certainly wouldn’t. Sometimes you can be too helpful. If she was infirm she wouldn’t be taking 3 cases. Unless of course she is a smuggler!

Your husband is a twat.

JoshLymanSwagger · Yesterday 03:31

Your husband and most on this thread don't understand why you need to keep them in your living room...

If I came home to find my neighbours luggage in our living room it would be returned to them PDQ whether DH said it was OK or not.

JMSA · Yesterday 04:00

Hate to break it to you, OP. Since he retired, Bob has been doing her nut in, and it’s him in the suitcases.

I might consider having 1 of 3 if I could choose which one.

The only thing that gives me pause about the DA angle, is surely the OP would be given the heads up, so that the OP or OP's husband doesn't say anything to the neighbours husband - if that makes sense.

I'm in the neighbour's 'age range'. For many in my generation there was a shame in being in an abused wife. We would wonder why, what were we doing/not doing that made our spouse's abuse us. So it may very well be that she's ashamed to say anything. Or ashamed to admit she's put up with it for so many years. Or maybe a fear that she'll be told 'We don't want to get involved".

And it may be that the neighbour's husband doesn't have any kind of acquaintanceship with OP and her husband, where the wife does. It doesn't sound like there's a close friendship, just a 'neighbourly relationship' so she is pretty sure they won't speak to him.

2026onwardsandup · Yesterday 04:31

Agree slightly odd request . Sorry that it meant a row with your husband.

The bit I am most intrigued about is why she specified for you to keep it in your living room? I appreciate that a lot of houses do have limited room / storage downstairs and in from the front door.

I am forever putting my phone down somewhere and not being able to find it again - but even I would find it impossible to lose 3 suitcases . …
For whatever reason, she may be feeling stressed about the departure / perhaps forgetting something so it is kind of you to agree to her request .

Bjorkdidit · Yesterday 04:59

90% likely it's an innocent but batshit reason eg if she didn't want her packed cases cluttering up her house why didn't she just leave packing until the hours/days before her trip?

Plus I reserve a special place in hell for people who like to free themselves of inconveniences by foisting them onto other people.

Then there's the small possibility that she's planning a covert leaving of her DH so obviously he can't see the cases.

In the small but possible likelihood that she's a criminal and it's a cover story so that's good enough reason to say no. Plus she's not going to be able to answer positively when asked if anyone could have interfered with her bags so will either have to lie or tell them they were in your possession and then they'd probably want to thoroughly search them at the airport.

Maybe go with the 'planning to leave her DH' angle and go in all concerned and whether she is OK. Then if it's not that you can safely push back and say you've changed your mind, perhaps remember that you were planning on painting your living room and can't store them because they'll be on your way.

Sure you should be helping, this … just isn’t usually any kind of help anyone needs?

I’ve a couple of older relatives like this. They don’t want to be seen leaving their house with cases. They think people are watching and waiting to rob them while on holiday.
if they leave without bags then they might be back at any time.

It’ll be this I wager! ^

MongoosePerfume · Yesterday 05:15

This is bonkers! Also, why the living room specifically? What would happen if they were stored in the hall or kitchen?

RedTagAlan · Yesterday 05:28

saveforthat · 25/09/2026 22:08

Maybe she doesn't want a potential burglar to see the cases through the window and break in when they know the house is empty.

That makes sense.

It is maybe a bit like buying an expensive new TV and putting the packing box beside someone else's bin :-)

RedTagAlan · Yesterday 05:33

Maybe your neighbour has a rebellious streak, If flying, and the check in staff ask " Have you packed these yourself and have they been with you at all times", the neighbour will politely reply "yes", then walk off with a skip in their step.

:-)

Your husband is right. Why would you agree to such a bizarre request? I've lived next door to my neighbours for 30 years, we have a quick chat if we see each other, I'd think they'd gone totally mad if they asked me to keep their suitcases!

This!!

And place marking as I would love to hear the explanation from your nutty neighbour!

Glitchymn1 · Yesterday 05:05

Yes, I can see this being one explanation.
