Looking after neighbours suitcase

ShakyBake · 25/09/2026 21:52

Neighbour of ours, friendly known her for about 7 years is off on holiday next week.
We were talking about it over the wall yesterday and informed me she will be taking 3 cases and would it be ok if I keep the suitcases (packed) in my living room until the morning she gets picked up. I said yes of course and didn't ask why. My husband doesn't understand why we need to keep them here. I said don't be silly we are neighbours and it's the right thing to do. That's not unreasonable is it?

Such nonsense. No one in their right mind is going to ask their neighbour to keep their packed holiday suitcases in their home without explanation. No one being asked to is going to agree without explanation.

Agreed.

Whut?

Why can't she keep her luggage in her own house til she gets picked up? It's a seriously weird request.

It doesn’t matter why. If it doesn’t inconvenience you or your husband, I don’t see the problem. It’s an odd request, but even more odd to object to it. Be nice, OP, and tell DH to spend his attention on something more worthwhile.

This is the most bizarre thread I’ve seen on MN this week.
Why would anyone wish to leave their packed suitcases with a neighbour?
why does the neighbour need so many cases - is she embarking on a six-moth round the world cruise?
Why would you say yes to such a frankly ridiculous request?
Why didn’t you ask your neighbour why she thought you’d want to babysit her luggage?

Completely bonkers.

This made me really laugh out loud 😂😂

is she embarking on a six-moth round the world cruise?

Please come back @ShakyBake we're all dying to know...

Don't do this. Because dont they ask at customs did you pack it yourself and has anyone had access to your case. Suppose she was smuggling drugs then she could say you put them in the suitcase. Sounds very very dodgy.

Every drug smuggler who gets caught ever says this though.

This
probarly not the reason but
I would wash it down all over to get my finger prints off it and when you give it back to her in the morning hold the handle with a tea towel or something 😂. & say you cant have it any longer as no room / having vistors or something.

Randomchat · 25/09/2026 21:56

What if she's smuggling drugs and when she gets caught she says the suitcase was at yours and you must have packed them?

Drugs was my first thought too. Glad it's not just me and my usual overthinking! 😁

BibbityBoppityTwo · Yesterday 01:24

Clearly it’s odd. I don’t think my DH would be impressed if I agreed to store three packed suitcases belonging to a neighbour.

If she is trying to escape a dangerous situation then of course I’d help, but I’d be asking her if that’s the case. It’s not a remotely normal request so there’s clearly something going on here. The fact she’s 70 would make me no less concerned.

Calliopespa · Yesterday 01:19

ShakyBake · 25/09/2026 22:05

Shes in her 70's and I said to my husband we should be helping and just had a blazing row. I'll ask her tomorrow and update them as I'm fed up with this and just trying to be neighbourly

I'd be too suspicious to agree to this profoundly odd request OP.

If it is all innocent, it shouldn't inconvenience her to have it at her own home.

B1anche · Yesterday 01:01

Isittimeformynapyet · 25/09/2026 23:55

I'm also intrigued as to why she specifically asked you to store them "in your living room"🤔

Perhaps it is the only room with carpets so she knows that the cases will pick up fibres. Should she be caught smuggling drugs/weapons/explosives or dumping her husbands body parts, she can pin the blame on OP and there will be evidence to back up her claim. 🤔

@GarlicSomething good points.
now I’m wondering how heavy the suitcases are

Millytante · Yesterday 00:40

Shoobadadoo · 25/09/2026 22:06

Maybe she feels unsafe and is running away from her husband

Maybe the husband…..is in all three suitcases 🙀

edit..sorry, I read the thread arseways and missed the hundreds of others saying this earlier 👆🏼

GarlicSomething · Yesterday 00:25

Or she's not going anywhere, but has decluttered and discovered all the rules on what you can't easily dispose of? She'll never pick them up, will stop speaking to you and leave you with the problem of her expired batteries, defunct tech, knackered shoes and two cans of arsenic-laden fence paint 😉

Who takes 3 suitcases on holiday at 70?

I'd have to, if I didn't understand online shopping. 4 packs of incontinence pants for a week - those packs are BIG - plus a ridiculous number of medication packs & bottles. I have to bring the meds, so I leave out the shampoo & lotions, etc, and have those delivered.

However, the state of OP's neighbour's bladder is a far less pressing issue than the Mystery Case Drop and OP's strange compliance.

This is what you get when you listen to all those commands to Be Kind - piss-takers!

Fontet · Yesterday 00:19

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

ifonlytheydlisten · Yesterday 00:13

Does she have an adult child and they are the dodgy one?

Thecatspantaloons · Yesterday 00:12

AcrossthePond55 · 25/09/2026 23:57

This is what I think. 'Silver Separation' is a growing phenomenon. Especially among older women and even more especially for women who have lived in abusive situations and have reached their breaking point. It could be that she's stashing the suitcases at yours until one of her children or a friend comes to get her. Or that she has a real fear of him and realizes that she may have to leave in a mad rush. The idea of a 'go bag' (or go luggage) is common advice for anyone wanting to leave an abusive relationship.

@ShakyBake If she's married or living with someone (even with an adult child) I don't think there's any problem with expressing to her that you feel there may be more to this than meets the eye and that you are concerned that she may be wanting to leave the home due to domestic abuse. I'm an 'older woman' and that question wouldn't offend me in these circumstances. In fact I'd probably be pleased that a neighbour was concerned enough to ask me. And if she is not married or living with someone/a child, there is no reason why anyone should have to store her luggage for her and I'd ask for an explanation as to why it was necessary. She doesn't sound like a likely drug smuggler (or someone getting rid of a body), but these days you never know what someone (of any age) may be getting up to.

I appreciate that you want to be a good neighbour, but your DH is right to be suspicious. So solve the problem by talking to the neighbour or asking your DH if he'd like to be the one to ask.

The only thing that gives me pause about the DA angle, is surely the OP would be given the heads up, so that the OP or OP's husband doesn't say anything to the neighbours husband - if that makes sense.

Freshrain · Yesterday 00:09

Having a 'blazing row' about it seems unnecessary and completely OTT, but you are seriously weird for not asking your neighbour why on earth she wants to put her suitcases in your house for a few days. that is a very odd request to make however old she is.

ifonlytheydlisten · Yesterday 00:09

Who takes 3 suitcases on holiday at 70?

DelightedLongEnough · Yesterday 00:07

Maybe it's the husband in two of the cases and drugs in the third. She dumps him en route and heads off for a new life in the sun.

AInightingale · Yesterday 00:03

Maybe there's just some really dull unsensational explanation, such as not wanting her husband or partner to open the cases, take stuff out and kick up a fuss about how much she's bringing (three bloody cases!) or that he's a last-minute packer who would shove four pairs of shoes in on top of her stuff?

Oh and I’d be laying them on a tarp and putting on a pair of marigolds before touching them. I don’t want any of my DNA on those cases when she gets asked if she packed them/carried them/stored them herself!

Are the cases ticking or moving, OP?

Or any bodily juices leaking onto the carpet?
