Looking after neighbours suitcase

ShakyBake · 25/09/2026 21:52

Neighbour of ours, friendly known her for about 7 years is off on holiday next week.
We were talking about it over the wall yesterday and informed me she will be taking 3 cases and would it be ok if I keep the suitcases (packed) in my living room until the morning she gets picked up. I said yes of course and didn't ask why. My husband doesn't understand why we need to keep them here. I said don't be silly we are neighbours and it's the right thing to do. That's not unreasonable is it?

NIBW - Neighbour is being weird!

l certainly wouldn’t agree to this without an explanation. Aside from that, l like everything ship shape at home. I travel a lot for work, but l wouldn’t keep my own luggage in the living room, let alone someone else’s.

Your husband is a twat.

What has @Yetone's husband done to deserve such damnation?

Perhaps it is the only room with carpets so she knows that the cases will pick up fibres. Should she be caught smuggling drugs/weapons/explosives or dumping her husbands body parts, she can pin the blame on OP and there will be evidence to back up her claim. 🤔

I think you are definitely correct.

You're FBI aren't you?

I’m 69 and feel it’s a bit ageist to assume that a 70 year old woman can’t be a drug dealer or be capable of taking three large suitcases on holiday with her.

This thread has classics written all over it..

Shes in her 70's and I said to my husband we should be helping and just had a blazing row. I'll ask her tomorrow and update them as I'm fed up with this and just trying to be neighbourly

Can’t you see this makes no sense though? There’s a difference between being neighbourly and participating in an utterly batshit situation.

She is 70yo, yet planning to drag 3 large suitcases around on a holiday? Irrespective, why can’t they be in her lounge room, or indeed another area in her house? Makes no sense.

I consider myself neighbourly, but if a neighbour asked me this, instead of going ‘yeah, sure’, I would say ‘I just don’t understand, can you step me through why you feel they need to be with me’, and I’d take it from there.

Does she live with anyone OP? Have you seen that person recently?

I do wish you'd come back and explain the bit about her being in 70s. I am in my 70s too and I'm completely puzzled by it. Do you think 70+ people are harmless, so she couldn't possibly be a gun runner or a drug mule? Oh yes she could. Have you seen how troublesome my generation is: chucking stuff over paintings, blocking roads, bedecking themselves in keffiyah to shout at more rational people? Those suitcases could bring you a whole world of grief.

Im 71 and your life dosnt end when you reach retirement age. If I had enough clothes and was ultra glam I would take 3 suitcases on holiday, or I could be running away at last from an abusive partner. But it is a bit weird asking you to look after them til she goes. Don't know why your hubby and you have had a furious row over it though, unless they are blocking the telly or he keeps bumping his knee on them. I would ask her, next time over the fence ( or maybe she is a fence!), why the need to hide them in your living room it is a bit weird at any age.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · Yesterday 05:44

I would think it would be quite annoying for you having three suitcases in your living room. Unless the rooms huge won’t they get in the way?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · Yesterday 05:41

I mean it’s a very weird thing to ask without an explanation

It’ll be this I wager! ^

Yes, I can see this being one explanation.

Your husband is right. Why would you agree to such a bizarre request? I've lived next door to my neighbours for 30 years, we have a quick chat if we see each other, I'd think they'd gone totally mad if they asked me to keep their suitcases!

This!!

And place marking as I would love to hear the explanation from your nutty neighbour!

RedTagAlan · Yesterday 05:33

Maybe your neighbour has a rebellious streak, If flying, and the check in staff ask " Have you packed these yourself and have they been with you at all times", the neighbour will politely reply "yes", then walk off with a skip in their step.

:-)

saveforthat · 25/09/2026 22:08

Maybe she doesn't want a potential burglar to see the cases through the window and break in when they know the house is empty.

That makes sense.

It is maybe a bit like buying an expensive new TV and putting the packing box beside someone else's bin :-)

MongoosePerfume · Yesterday 05:15

This is bonkers! Also, why the living room specifically? What would happen if they were stored in the hall or kitchen?

Glitchymn1 · Yesterday 05:05

magicstar1 · 25/09/2026 22:14

I’ve a couple of older relatives like this. They don’t want to be seen leaving their house with cases. They think people are watching and waiting to rob them while on holiday.
if they leave without bags then they might be back at any time.

It’ll be this I wager! ^

Sure you should be helping, this … just isn’t usually any kind of help anyone needs?

Bjorkdidit · Yesterday 04:59

90% likely it's an innocent but batshit reason eg if she didn't want her packed cases cluttering up her house why didn't she just leave packing until the hours/days before her trip?

Plus I reserve a special place in hell for people who like to free themselves of inconveniences by foisting them onto other people.

Then there's the small possibility that she's planning a covert leaving of her DH so obviously he can't see the cases.

In the small but possible likelihood that she's a criminal and it's a cover story so that's good enough reason to say no. Plus she's not going to be able to answer positively when asked if anyone could have interfered with her bags so will either have to lie or tell them they were in your possession and then they'd probably want to thoroughly search them at the airport.

Maybe go with the 'planning to leave her DH' angle and go in all concerned and whether she is OK. Then if it's not that you can safely push back and say you've changed your mind, perhaps remember that you were planning on painting your living room and can't store them because they'll be on your way.

2026onwardsandup · Yesterday 04:31

Agree slightly odd request . Sorry that it meant a row with your husband.

The bit I am most intrigued about is why she specified for you to keep it in your living room? I appreciate that a lot of houses do have limited room / storage downstairs and in from the front door.

I am forever putting my phone down somewhere and not being able to find it again - but even I would find it impossible to lose 3 suitcases . …
For whatever reason, she may be feeling stressed about the departure / perhaps forgetting something so it is kind of you to agree to her request .

The only thing that gives me pause about the DA angle, is surely the OP would be given the heads up, so that the OP or OP's husband doesn't say anything to the neighbours husband - if that makes sense.

I'm in the neighbour's 'age range'. For many in my generation there was a shame in being in an abused wife. We would wonder why, what were we doing/not doing that made our spouse's abuse us. So it may very well be that she's ashamed to say anything. Or ashamed to admit she's put up with it for so many years. Or maybe a fear that she'll be told 'We don't want to get involved".

And it may be that the neighbour's husband doesn't have any kind of acquaintanceship with OP and her husband, where the wife does. It doesn't sound like there's a close friendship, just a 'neighbourly relationship' so she is pretty sure they won't speak to him.

Mydogisagentleman · Yesterday 04:15

I might consider having 1 of 3 if I could choose which one.

JMSA · Yesterday 04:00

Hate to break it to you, OP. Since he retired, Bob has been doing her nut in, and it’s him in the suitcases.

Your husband and most on this thread don't understand why you need to keep them in your living room...

If I came home to find my neighbours luggage in our living room it would be returned to them PDQ whether DH said it was OK or not.

Yetone · 25/09/2026 23:11

Do you really want the cases in your living room? I certainly wouldn’t. Sometimes you can be too helpful. If she was infirm she wouldn’t be taking 3 cases. Unless of course she is a smuggler!

Your husband is a twat.

Who takes 3 suitcases on holiday at 70?

People like me who overpack no matter how hard we try not to to.
