Looking after neighbours suitcase

ShakyBake · 25/09/2026 21:52

Neighbour of ours, friendly known her for about 7 years is off on holiday next week.
We were talking about it over the wall yesterday and informed me she will be taking 3 cases and would it be ok if I keep the suitcases (packed) in my living room until the morning she gets picked up. I said yes of course and didn't ask why. My husband doesn't understand why we need to keep them here. I said don't be silly we are neighbours and it's the right thing to do. That's not unreasonable is it?

Caught on the hop I think a lot of people would agree, apart from the perfect people on MN. It's the request that's odd, not the OP.

I disagree. Only on MN do people agree to such random and/or weird requests without question. I never hear stories like this in real life.

It doesn’t matter why. If it doesn’t inconvenience you or your husband, I don’t see the problem. It’s an odd request, but even more odd to object to it. Be nice, OP, and tell DH to spend his attention on something more worthwhile.

Maybe it does inconvenience the husband though, which is why he is objecting.

We dont have anywhere we can store 3 packed suitcases without them being in the way, it would really irritate me having suitcases in the livingroom, they'd be an eyesore and in the way.

No reason for the op and her husband to have to store the cases for the neighbour, its not unkind not to do this, its putting them out for no real reason

I doubt anyone would make the request!

Why on earth is 1 woman taking 3 suitcases on holiday? Presumably she's going on a plane? She'll be paying alot in hold baggage. If its a package deal youre allow 1 case.
All a bit odd,why on earth would you have to keep a suitcase in your house?
First thing I'd say to her is ,why?

Where was the ironing board?

Newusernameforthiss · Yesterday 08:41

OPs gone quiet... The tiny ninja concealed in the big Samsonite has got out and abducted her 🙈

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · Yesterday 08:41

Are you sure the suitcases are all hers? Not belonging to some random ‘nice’ man she happened to meet, who asked if she’d mind doing him a great favour?

Bestfootforward11 · Yesterday 08:37

Maybe she’s leaving her DH?

StormGazing · Yesterday 08:36

Weird requests like that need a confused look and mouth making a ‘why’ request

Is she going on holiday or is she running away from the person she lives with?or is she expecting a visit from the police so needs to hide the evidence?

I mean it is a bit weird

i think she is leaving her husband .

This is one of the most fascinating posts in a long while. We put out bins and take in parcels for our neighbours. I have never heard of anyone being asked to store packed suitcases pre holiday!

Edited

I predict that OP will get a message that her neighbour's 'friend' will be round to pick up the cases, and a well built man of few words & wearing dark glasses will soon be at her door.

MeowDoku · Yesterday 08:18

The only reason I could understand this request would be if she lives in the upstairs flat and you in the downstairs and she doesn't want to be banging suitcases downstairs early in the morning with a taxi waiting outside.
More context around the request is needed to know if you've been unreasonable to accept it

This thread is shaping up very nicely and becoming quite intriguing. Although I do confess that I am currently reading one of Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club books, which is possibly skewing my opinion a little. I'm sure Richard could take the idea of the 'harmless 70 year old woman wirh three suitcases' and give it a run for its money.

Kingdomofsleep · Yesterday 08:12

I think it'll be something quite mundane like the neighbour has cream carpets and doesn't want suitcases on it, but op has tiled/wood floors and neighbour feels entitled to leave them there.

I am agreeing with everyone on this thread though, that it is bonkers to say yes without asking why. If I were op's husband I would also be very frustrated with her.

The problem with many "people pleasers" is that they're willing to cause discomfort to people within the family, in order to be "helpful" to people outside the family. It's a kind of selfishness really, because you're motivated by praise and thanks.

MyDeftDuck · Yesterday 08:05

That is the most bizarre request I’ve ever heard! And it be a refusal from me…….why should you have her suitcases cluttering up your house? As pp stated there might be something illegal going on, she might be hiding evidence and what if she has an infestation of bedbugs?……..you can bet they’ll be in the cases and the contents!

Don’t do it! It’s clearly dodgy.

CurlewKate · Yesterday 07:55

I’d think she’s escaping from abuse.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · Yesterday 07:52

Its a weird request. Supposing its got drugs in it?

I think you are definitely correct.

I’ve a couple of older relatives like this. They don’t want to be seen leaving their house with cases. They think people are watching and waiting to rob them while on holiday.
if they leave without bags then they might be back at any time.

But they have to leave their house with the cases to get to the OPs house. So a burglar could see them leaving with cases then? 🤷‍♀️

op, your neighbour is batshit.

Shes in her 70's and I said to my husband we should be helping and just had a blazing row. I'll ask her tomorrow and update them as I'm fed up with this and just trying to be neighbourly

Why would it be helping? So she doesn't have them cluttering up her house but you do?

Ethelspagetti · Yesterday 07:22

What a strange request?! I cannot believe you didn’t ask why?! Just ask her how come she can’t keep the suitcases at her house? Does it mean they’ll wake you up super early to get them on their way to the airport? I’d say no because that’s weird! Unless it’s a suprise for her husband?!

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · Yesterday 07:20

Obviously this is weird and you are so lacking in curiosity it’s bizarre OP! Why would anyone need to do this for any reasonable reason? Is she married, because the only possible reason I (and others in here) can think of is that she’s leaving her husband and doesn’t want him to see her packed cases. In which case I’d help her…but your guilelessness is concerning! 🤦‍♀️

NIBW - Neighbour is being weird!

l certainly wouldn’t agree to this without an explanation. Aside from that, l like everything ship shape at home. I travel a lot for work, but l wouldn’t keep my own luggage in the living room, let alone someone else’s.
