Looking after neighbours suitcase

ShakyBake · 25/09/2026 21:52

Neighbour of ours, friendly known her for about 7 years is off on holiday next week.
We were talking about it over the wall yesterday and informed me she will be taking 3 cases and would it be ok if I keep the suitcases (packed) in my living room until the morning she gets picked up. I said yes of course and didn't ask why. My husband doesn't understand why we need to keep them here. I said don't be silly we are neighbours and it's the right thing to do. That's not unreasonable is it?

WTF? Hell no. This have weird and wrong vibes all over. I can’t think of any sensible explanation for that request- unless
she’s actually packed
so she can run away from him?

Amorica · 25/09/2026 23:13

It's a bit unreasonable, yes. You're going to have a bunch of suitcases in your lounge over the weekend so your neighbour doesn't have to have them in hers?

I can see why your DH is a bit annoyed though I think a blazing row is OTT unless you do this sort of thing a fair bit.

TremendousFlatulence · 25/09/2026 23:13

Is it at all possible that the neighbour has taken an axe to her husband and put him in the cases? In this unusually warm September OP I think you’ll be able to tell within a
day or so 😂

So OP's house gets burgled instead. 👌

Yeah, I don't really think that plan would work too well, it'd put the neighbours right in the frame.

ShakyBake · 25/09/2026 22:05

Shes in her 70's and I said to my husband we should be helping and just had a blazing row. I'll ask her tomorrow and update them as I'm fed up with this and just trying to be neighbourly

Do you really want the cases in your living room? I certainly wouldn’t. Sometimes you can be too helpful. If she was infirm she wouldn’t be taking 3 cases. Unless of course she is a smuggler!

Jaggy1 · 25/09/2026 23:10

Obviously having an affair with your husband and told him she’d tell you. He knows she’s left clues in the cases for you to find & that’s why he’s gone mental.

Or you know, something along those lines.

fashionqueen0123 · 25/09/2026 22:59

Leaving from next door is ok though? 🤣🤣

BrokenWingsCantFly · 25/09/2026 23:08

Crazy. Why wouldnt you ask her why? Why would you agree to have your house cluttered up for someone else's luggage when assuming you don't live in a house much much bigger than hers. Find it hard to believe anyone would agree to having 3 suitcases in their lounge without any reason given.

If it is genuine my 1st thoughts was to do with drug smuggling, lessen the risk for them beforehand, but given she is 70 it seems less likely. 3 suitcases for 1 person on a holiday sounds a lot, so 2nd thought would be towards this is an escape plan. The 3rd would be she sont want the clutter, but given 3 cases and that would be extremely selfish this seems the less likely option.

Saying yes to any requests without question doesn't make you a better person. You need to learn that. If saying yes with no question is scenario 3, then that just makes you a mug. If it is scenario 2 then you could have helped much more by learning the circumstances and could help assist an escape further by meeting somewhere with the cases. If scenario 1 and she is somehow caught up in drug smuggling then you have put your whole family at risk. They are your priority

Thecatspantaloons · 25/09/2026 23:07

Now this is what a decent Friday night thread should be 🤗. No arguments, no rage bait, just good old fashion bat shittery where no one died.

lottiegarbanzo · 25/09/2026 23:05

Full moon alert - it’s tomorrow 🌖

FrangipaniBlue · 25/09/2026 23:04

Does she live with anyone OP? Have you seen that person recently?

fashionqueen0123 · 25/09/2026 23:03

TremendousFlatulence · 25/09/2026 22:27

Generally speaking - if someone asks you to do something ridiculous your first question should be 'Why?'. Not 'oh yeah, sure, I'll do that really stupid thing you're suggesting and no of course I won't ask any questions. I'll just do it'.
Are you fully in possession of your faculties OP?

Exactly!

Very odd request - what reason did she give?

fashionqueen0123 · 25/09/2026 22:59

magicstar1 · 25/09/2026 22:14

I’ve a couple of older relatives like this. They don’t want to be seen leaving their house with cases. They think people are watching and waiting to rob them while on holiday.
if they leave without bags then they might be back at any time.

Leaving from next door is ok though? 🤣🤣

AInightingale · 25/09/2026 22:58

I do wonder what twilight zone some people on here live in. My neighbours are occasionally troublesome, but none of them have ever asked to use my living room as a left luggage office.

lottiegarbanzo · 25/09/2026 22:58

Are they locked? Go on, you know you want to…

fashionqueen0123 · 25/09/2026 22:58

This is bloody weird

Waytoohothot · 25/09/2026 22:57

If shes going on her own you cant take 3 cases,.is she english? Shes not trying to smuggle food or fags or money back to her home country, seriously your fingerprints will be on the cases, she may be 70 but this is well dodge

OrangeFlower14 · 25/09/2026 22:57

Your husband must be so confused

Why on earth would anybody say yes to this?

Newusername2026 · 25/09/2026 22:57

I am with your husband in not understanding why. The only thing I can think of is if she is running away from whoever she lives with

PollyBell · 25/09/2026 22:56

Maybe you should keep them under the floor boards

HokiePokie · 25/09/2026 22:54

Maybe she's got a one way ticket and is not actually taking the cases with her. Perhaps she's leaving something awful behind in them....(possibly her husband, in three pieces). Then the evidence will be in your house when the crime is uncovered.

Savoretti · 25/09/2026 22:53

I think OP may be the one on drugs

rjfiih · 25/09/2026 22:50

No, I wouldn't do that. Why on earth does she need to store the suitcases at yours and clutter your place up with them?

It's ridiculous and 70 year olds have been done for drug smuggling before.

Merseymum1980 · 25/09/2026 22:50

FloofyKat · 25/09/2026 22:48

This is the most bizarre thread I’ve seen on MN this week.
Why would anyone wish to leave their packed suitcases with a neighbour?
why does the neighbour need so many cases - is she embarking on a six-moth round the world cruise?
Why would you say yes to such a frankly ridiculous request?
Why didn’t you ask your neighbour why she thought you’d want to babysit her luggage?

Completely bonkers.

😂
