Ok very random but I work in retail and we’ve been told to expect panic buying/shortages on fuel next week due to something big happening. Am I really naive as when I was told this I have no idea what it is about? I do read the news in the morning but I haven’t seen anything that would relate to this?

I think she works for a supermarket chain and she’s been told that next week people are going to start panicking about diesel prices at the pump, and how prices on goods and services will jump as diesel users pass this on to the public.

OP, this coupled with the governments “get your emergency rations in” is putting the shitters up everyone.

If you can spare a couple of hundred, I’d suggest you go get your stash, put it away, then chill.

Most likely because it's payday for many as PPs say, retail probably have patterns of buying which fit in with this. Diesel is much more likely to run short than petrol but that has been the case for a few months now

I did buy 48 loo rolls from Amazon yesterday but that was because there a price drop, I always buy bulk from there nowadays so should see me and DH over the apocalypse

if Covid taught me anything it’s that in a genuine emergency we are absolutely fucked. There is no contingency planning. No one is coming to save us. The govt are reacting in real time. Some of that will work. A lot of it won’t. Some of us will muddle through. Lots of us won’t be able to.

The govt are absolutely not casually cracking on to the staff in Tesco that next week they should expect panic buying but not telling them why.

I've just posted re El Nino. Massive concerns regarding climate change and severe global warming. The news is full of it - just type el nino into google and chose which reports you'd like to read ... or indeed not. Here's one from the Guardian.

We are generally a bit fucked in a few ways - issues with the oil market, drought over the summer means a rubbish harvest throughout Europe and therefore rising food prices, severe weather predictions due to El Niño. Then there’ll be the budget so fuel will rise and have an impact on food prices and push them up further.

I’m sure there will be more fuckwittery coming our way from our favourite international leaders.

Apart from that we’re all fine.

And of course don’t forget next Tuesday Harry and Meghan will come out as our alien overlords. Which will make them a bit more interesting.

what you are possibly picking up on, is the momentum of people finally listening to the general GVT advice - which is finally falling in line with the rest of Europe - for every household to have enough basic supplies in store to last 3 days

Next week is pay day

People who are now finally getting this message will be buying

The face is because it is EXACTLY people like you asking questions like that who trigger totally unnecessary panic buying and shortages.

PLEASE be more responsible. When you go to the shops just buy what you need. Don't "stock up" more than you would normally.
