Panic buying next week?

I don’t know that that’s necessarily true. No idea of facts but I’m planting next years crops right now. I have about 2000L of red diesel storage on the farm. I’ll be using that up in less than a week when I’ll be reliant upon being able to deliver. Can’t order till a few days before because if it rains all week I won’t have space to store it.

We also have generators for livestock operations. Again, we have enough diesel on site to last for about two days but no more.

We are not unusual, it’s how farming works.

There’s no magic stock of diesel I can use to plant crops. If the forecourts are short, our suppliers are short. Yes my sheds are full of last years crop (although they’re certainly not full based on the weather) but if there’s no diesel for the lorries to collect it there’s no way of getting it anywhere.

Our whole food system is based on Just in Time principles.

Can anyone recommend a good camping gas stove?!

This is the problem and why there is blind panic 🫣

We have enough fuel to produce food, enough stockpiles of grains, etc to feed people, enough of everything. There is potential that supply could delay occasionally but not significantly.

And by we I don’t necessarily mean the UK alone, I mean within Europe, amongst countries who trade with each other, outside of any blocked/inaccessible fuel. Nobody will starve, nobody will be unable to get to work, there will only be real and genuine shortages if we actually panic buy

We have an older house so we have a pantry and I do keep stocked up on pantry items like tins and dried food etc etc but I’m not talking of warehouse level stocks of 24 cans of everything I might ever use!!!!! I’m talking about 6 tins of beans/spagetti, kidney beans/
chopped tomatoes - etc etc

if everyone goes out and goes wild it pushes up prices and means people who can’t afford to buy extra miss out on availability but also they pay more as will anyone else!

Depends on the cyber attack, if shops lose the use of their till systems they probably can't take cash payments either.

Re fuel stock, I have a couple of questions.
Apparenrly we have 6 weeks of road fuel. Can anyone put this level into context please? For example, is this more or less than we have typically had in “normal” trading conditions, ie no war or pandemic.

Given the 6 weeks & context, are the UK’s fuel refineries & importers able to keep this stock level up?
The same goes for aviation fuel though I don’t believe that has a 6 week inventory level target.

It would be ideal if someone could share the contribution from each of those sources & the confidence there is in reliability of supply, per fuel type.

When there’s a decent piece of analysis then we can decide collectively whether or not to fill our pockets full of diesel.

We have already seen the shortage. Our local station must have just closed when we got there (lunch time) so we had to fill up at motor was services and some pumps were out of unleaded.

My boss knew about first lock down 3 days before it, we literally closed entire building the day before it was announced (hospitality).

What kind of retail? It's not outing to say supermarket, so if you mean supermarket, just say so. And the government have been telling everybody to stock up for weeks now, its hardly news.

Possibly some kind of cyber attack, so make sure you have cash at home aswell as supplies. Banks could be hit as some have been recently. Waters being tested IMO. Having cash at home means you can still buy what you may need. Just be prepared rather than oblivious as some posters seem to be.

No, we really don't. I'm not sure why you think we do. We currently have about 6 weeks' worth of fuel and after two weeks prices would be extremely high. After about 4 weeks we would likely see rationing with supplies being diverted to essential industries

In any event the entirety of the food in the shops (including their warehouses) is around 3 days worth if it had to feed everyone in the country so if there was no more coming into the country for some reason then there would be nothing to transport anyway.

There are fuel shortages in Cambridgeshire. My son said he managed to get some but most fuel stations are really low.
Glad for my electric car at times like this.

Retail industry

Why do you think we have enough stockpiles/supplies? The shops hold three days worth of food. If we buy more now (as requested), they can restock very quickly multiple times and without there being any issue whatsoever. If we wait until there is a problem then the shelves will empty rapidly and, depending on the emergency, cannot be restocked. We no longer hold emergency food supplies as a country. We stopped doing that year ago. Likewise we no longer hold gas supplies.

People need to stock up now for everyones benefit.
