Who should pay for flights?

AIBU76 · 25/09/2026 19:43

Person A and person B are going on holiday and paid separately for their flights. Person B had a bereavement so Person A cancelled the hotel believing that Person B wouldnt want to go anymore. Person A did not speak to Person B about this at all before cancelling. Person B hadnt said anything about not wanting to go and cancellation was done only a few days after bereavement. Person B can't get a refund for flights as travel insurance small print doesnt cover a relative dying from a pre existing condition and both flight companies only refund if the death was within 10 days of flight. Who should pay for Person B's flights?

So what you’re actually saying is that person A doesn’t want to go on holiday with person B any more.

That is tough tbh. Person B should just go on their own. If they choose not to, they can’t expect person A to reimburse them.

There are women of 18 travelling the world solo, what sort of holiday is it that B can’t manage alone?

AMarkAMissionABrandAScar · 25/09/2026 21:00

A goes on Booking.com and finds a hotel, both get on the plane as originally planned. I know; I'm a genius.

arethereanyleftatall · 25/09/2026 20:57

Just write the blooming details!!! It’s like getting blood out of a stone.

Does A not want to go any more as she doesn’t like B?

rjfiih · 25/09/2026 20:56

Person A shouldn't have cancelled without talking to person B first.
Person B could rebook accommodation and still go alone.
Person B could talk to person A about rebooking the accommodation as they still want to go.
If Person B doesn't want to go alone and A now doesn't want to go at all B will have to suck up the costs of the flights.

Can’t person A just rebook a hotel so you can both still go?

Person B doesnt want to go on holiday alone

In which case they should obviously pay for their own flight, since it is their choice not to go.

dreamingofgoodhair · 25/09/2026 20:52

Why can’t they just both go and book another hotel ?

LIZS · 25/09/2026 20:50

Both A and B should get the taxes and fees back on cancelled flights. A needs to refund B the difference as they unilaterally bailed on the break.

dairydebris · 25/09/2026 20:50

So the flights aren't cancelled?
The hotel is canceled, was it refundable?
Do person A and B still wish to go on holiday together?

TruffleSlinky · 25/09/2026 20:46

So did Person A cancel their own flights? Did they get a refund?

Catza · 25/09/2026 20:43

AIBU76 · 25/09/2026 20:37

Person B doesnt want to go on holiday alone

Then they should probably not force person A to compensate them for the flight which they can take but choose not to.

AIBU76 · 25/09/2026 20:37

Person B doesnt want to go on holiday alone

So why doesn't person A want to go?

If it can’t be rebooked person A needs to
co er person B loss as they should have checked before cancelling

HambleTheDoll · 25/09/2026 20:19

Just book another hotel. What sort of idiot cancels without checking?

DaftFunk · 25/09/2026 20:17

At least no one cancelled the cheque

Jellybunny98 · 25/09/2026 20:11

Not sure why anyone has to pay for the flights? If B wants to go all they have to do is book another hotel.

NullaEffugium · 25/09/2026 20:09

Book a new hotel? Failing to see why the flights need to be cancelled.

ColdAsAWitches · 25/09/2026 20:08

You're obviously Person B as Person A wouldn't include all the details about insurance. Assuming A cancelled flights not the hotel, they should pay because they cancelled without even discussing it. If they just cancelled the hotel though, why should they pay for flights?

Thisusernameisalwaysavailable · 25/09/2026 20:07

Why would B cancel their flight?

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 25/09/2026 20:04

Book a new accommodation?

GladysHeeler · 25/09/2026 20:02

So nobody cancelled the flights.

LizandDerekGoals · 25/09/2026 20:00

BlueMum16 · 25/09/2026 19:46

I'm confused.

Does person B want to still go? If so why are they cancelling the flights. Just book a hotel and go away.

This.

Catza · 25/09/2026 19:53

I am also confused about why would anyone need to pay for flights?
I am sure there is more than one hotel at their destination if the original one no longer has rooms.
If person A cancelled their own flights, they should pay for person's B accommodation. But good luck actually enforcing it...

Savvysix1984 · 25/09/2026 19:50

Person A. But why can’t person B book another hotel and just go?
