Is this rude??

Settle an argument for me please!

Parent A tells Parent B to stop messing around with child so they will eat their tea.

Child then says to Parent B 'that's you told!'

Was the child being rude to Parent A here?

YABU - Child was rude
YANBU - Child was not rude

Sounds more cheeky to parent B.

They've picked up the phrase somewhere and used it. I couldn’t get too vexed about this.

Agreed on the not getting vexed! Just trying to settle a debate.... Parent A thought child was cheeky to them, yes. As in minimising what they were saying I suppose?

As opposed to parent A minimising the value of the parent B and their ability to make independent decisions about how to interact with their own child?

I voted the wrong way because I didn't read the post properly.

I assumed it was asking if the child was rude to parent B (maybe, depending on the age of the child, more cheeky than rude, but I do think they were).

It didn't cross my mind that the question would be whether they were rude to parent A (I don't think they were).

Tbf something like that would make us both laugh and diffuse the situation. Maybe that’s what the child was going for? Which is a not good or healthy position for a child to be in.

That's definitely not the case! In a rush to get somewhere, said can we please stop messing about so x eats their tea quicker and we can get out the door.

And child hasn't been told off or anything it's just a conversation we have had after it was said.

If someone's going to speak to an adult like they're a child it's not surprising that the child will also speak to the adult like they're a child.
Not that it matters in this situation, it sounds like a total non-event.
