Wow - I just read his quotes in that article you sent. He sounds unbelievably self-absorbed and arrogant. I hope the residents win.
As you say Breshnev he sounds like one of life’s takers and he genuinely can’t conceive of the fact that, yes, this time he needs to put himself out a bit.

People like him don't understand that 'give and take' means that sometimes we all give and sometimes we all take. They quite happily understand it to mean that some people (probably not them) give and some people (definitely them) take... and because "it's a well-known phrase", that legitimises it.

See also people who berate professionals in the public sector with "I pay your wages" - even though they aren't even a taxpayer anyway (not that it justifies it if they were, mind...).

Well. That's what rules are for.... I do sympathise with him, but if he's parked on private property and that's the penalty, then unfortunately, it needs to be paid. If they start making exceptions for people, they may as well not bother with enforcing it at all 🤷‍♀️

Being on the school run doesn't not give you the right to park like a knob

He admits in the article he's been personally approached before and asked not to park there, the school have told parents not to park there, I'd put £100 on the cameras being installed specifically because of ridiculous school parking.

He saw the signs, and says 'if you get there at 8am it's fine but 8.30 is carnage', he says there needs to be 'give and take', god knows what he thinks he's giving.

He's exceptionally entitled, his argument is basically 'I wanted to and I'm more important than everyone else. FAFO.

Choose a different school maybe which is closer?

I also live on a private road near three schools but in our case we’ve stopped maintaining the top part of the road to stop the school run parking. TBH if people park there considerately for ten minutes a day that would be fine, most do, but some park like dicks blocking driveways and occasionally the bin lorry as the road is narrow. I had no idea I’d be able to hire a private company to enforce fines but now I’m tempted.

Lots of schools have insufficient parking close by. Parking on a private road is no different to parking on someone’s driveway and most people would be understandably upset to find parents regularly parked up on their drive.

It’s not up to the residents to solve the parents’ problems for them.

He deserves to be fined. I live on a private road next to 3 schools. Despite frequent comms from one of the schools and very clear signage, parents frequently drive into our street. They’d argue that it’s only for a few minutes at a time but one parent making 10 trips per week multiplied by many parents becomes significant. We resurfaced the roads 12 years ago at a cost of tens of thousands of pounds and the more usage it gets, the quicker it will wear. Also, should anything happen in our road, they’ll be claiming on our PLI.

I think it's really rough when a car park is council/public property, or that of a shop where customers are allowed/encouraged to park, but they then issue huge fines for accidentally/unavoidably staying a few minutes over... but this is a clearly-marked private road, so no sympathy at all.

It's like the equivalent of walking through the front door and into a random stranger's private house, even 'just for a few minutes' - it's clearly entirely out of bounds to you and that's the end of it.

He shouldn’t have parked there. But I have had a look on google maps and there is nowhere close by to park. I wonder where the rest of the parents park.

I live in a similar set up... private road opposite a school.

Its never just a few minutes. Cars are parked illegally from 8.30-9am, then 2.45-3.45. (Yes, sime get there nearly an hour before). Longer for events.
Theyve cause a lot of damage to the grass/plants.
Theyve nearly hit children when mounting curbs.
They block driveways.

Tge management company has started issuing tickets recently... and the problems have disappeared. We can ring the warden if they are parked at odd times as well.

Both the title and the body of the article are disingenuous by saying he got the fine for dropping his kids off to school.

You said the article was disingenuous, it isn’t. Then you’ve changed it to title of the article. Clearly we don’t agree, and like I said it’s irrelevant anyway.

I live somewhere with a private car park. There are signs everywhere. There’s a parking company patrolling - and signs to say this. You’d be amazed how outraged people are when they get a ticket because they were “only popping” somewhere (we live in a small city centre). I agree it’s a case of entitlement/ the rules don’t apply to me mentality.

So if you know it’s a click bait title why are you arguing that it’s not disingenuous?

The article isn’t clear in the beginning, it starts off with ‘A dad is facing a potential legal dispute over dropping his children off at school.’ Which is stupid.

Most news articles have click bait titles, that’s the point of them. The article is very clear though. Not that it matters either way, the man didn’t write it

I didn’t know you get a fine for parking on a private road. Do they all have permits and he didn’t? Our road is maintained by the residents and not council adopted but unsure if it’s classed as a private road because of it. Either way, if the signage was clear, then it’s his own fault.
