Does it piss anybody else off when a colleague says hello/good morning in Teams and then waits for you to respond before telling you what they want?

It's infuriating!

I dislike when people do this, but tend to respond with no return greeting, just a simple “Did you need something?” and they usually get straight to the point. I’ve never had to do it more than twice before people get into the habit of telling me what they need without the platitudes. Ignoring them would be pointless IMO because they’re going to ask for something eventually anyway, I’d rather know what it is sooner than later 🤷‍♀️

Because that reply infers that I am available to help them right there and then….. I might not be!

you wouldn’t send someone an email saying “hi!” and nothing else…… you wouldn’t walk over to someone’s desk and say “hi!” then just stand there….

what’s the hardship in saying what you want in the first message??

I understand why you want the details in the first message, but equally if you aren’t available either:

Dont reply until you are

or

Reply. “Well thanks, apologies, on a call just now, drop me a note with what you need and I’ll get back to you.

Dr13Hadley · 25/09/2026 17:47

I don’t use teams regularly thank god but this reminds me of my kids when they message me with “Mum”
That pisses me off and I don’t reply until they get to the point!

Emptyandsad · 25/09/2026 12:25

Nobody mentioned being scared. Just polite. If you're too busy to type "good thanks, how can I help?" then you need to talk to your line manager about your workload.

If being polite stresses you out, then maybe you should ask yourself why that is. Do you think your time is too important to waste on being pleasant? If you are pathologically unable to spend a very brief amount of time on the niceties that smooth our interactions, you should probably make sure your colleagues understand your handicap so they can consciously make allowances

Everything about Teams is hell on earth. Finding files and if something was a post or a meeting chat.... fuck knows.

It's giving me the rage and I had a day off today.

FrangipaniBlue · 25/09/2026 17:39

Wonkybaby · 25/09/2026 10:17

I worked with a woman who had a pinned message on her Teams, something like, ‘I’ve adopted the No Hello method, please message me with your request, I will not reply to messages just saying Hello’

I like her!!

Glazerblazer · 25/09/2026 17:31

I’m sure you as a customer would much prefer me answer your query and not have to wait for me to do ‘niceties’ over teams. In the old days of someone walked over to me that would see I was on the phone and leave me alone!

This

Teams is asynchronous, so the analogy is terrible

RuralLiving123 · 25/09/2026 16:54

ChessieFL · 25/09/2026 13:03

Yeah I hate this too. It’s always people from our Finance team who I’ve never met that do it, they clearly don’t care how I am so just ask the question FFS!

The other thing that annoys me is people ignoring Do Not Disturb status. It happens so often now that I put DND status on and people still message. I raised this in a meeting once (an in person one!) and several people said they never look at people’s statuses, they just send the message and assume people will just reply when convenient. No concept of the fact that just sending the message means I have to stop and read it (because it must be urgent if it’s been sent when I’m on DND, must it?) and then they know I’ve read it so I feel pressured to reply.

Before Teams we had a system (maybe Lync?) which blocked anyone from messaging you when DND was on. That was great.

For me teams doesn't pop up message warnings when I am on DND so I ignore all messages until my status changes. But then I would be unlikely to have teams maximised because I'm doing something else, so I genuinely don't see that the messages have appeared. I don't mind being sent messages whilst I'm not available, as long as they don't expect a response.

I would generally start the first conversation of the day with a saluation, but I then type what I want straight afterwards so it's the next message but without the pause. If I remember I'll do the soft return so it's one message, but I often hit enter forgetting to hold the shift key down.

I don't mind either way what people do for me as long as they don't start their message with Hey

Glittertwins · 25/09/2026 16:49

We have “team” Teams chat where we check in, say hi, drop in and out as they day goes on.
Anyone else who directly messages me with pretty much just “hello, how are you” gets ignored or left. If you want something, either come and talk to me face to face, if it’s a casual question, just say hi and ask the question. I’m not breaking off from what I was doing for someone else otherwise to answer a hello.

Robertsmithsnan · 25/09/2026 16:33

Infuriates me that we have to say good morning to our team. We are not remote. We see each other face to face and say hi. But we have to say hello and goodbye each morning/evening via teams.

ThatPeppyStork · 25/09/2026 16:10

EmpressaurusKitty · 25/09/2026 13:57

That would have been a much better idea.

@Bjorkdidit you can actually change this in the settings, I forget where but you can choose if enter sends the message or does a line break

AdeleRochester · 25/09/2026 16:06

When our company first implemented instant messaging well before Teams) saying hello first and waiting for a reply was mandated as correct etiquette.

It’s mostly gone by the wayside now, but there are no doubt people who are just trying to be polite.

Being polite back really isn’t a big ask.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 25/09/2026 15:50

IwouldlikeanewTV · 25/09/2026 11:53

Blimey some of you are so rude. I don’t reply immediately if someone can’t be bothered to say hi, how are you, or hope you are well, or did you have a nice holiday. You wouldn’t walk upto someone’s desk ( old days) and say I want this document. You would say hello initially and hopefully ask how they are. Just basic manners.

This

cartagenagina · 25/09/2026 15:44

Ignore it

Sherararara · 25/09/2026 15:43

KindnessIsKey123 · 25/09/2026 12:48

We have a neighbour who does this. She’ll send you a message saying hi are you working from home tomorrow? And you’ll say yes, and then she’ll ask if you walk her dog on your lunch break for free. I now just don’t reply and after about 10 minutes she’ll type out what she wants.

Yeah that’s not quite the same..

user293948849167 · 25/09/2026 14:50

Omg yes! I just don’t reply now until the follow up message arrives

EmpressaurusKitty · 25/09/2026 13:57

Bjorkdidit · 25/09/2026 13:56

Well I didn't know that soft returns were a thing so having Googled what one actually is and how to do it I will try and remember to use it in future, while wondering WTF they didn't leave the normal return function as was and pick another way to send a message once you were happy with it's contents.

That would have been a much better idea.

Bjorkdidit · 25/09/2026 13:56

EmpressaurusKitty · 25/09/2026 13:49

I used to always reply when someone messaged Hello, but then I realised that most of them go on to post the rest of their message line by line. Bang bang bang. It drives me nuts so now I usually switch Teams off at that point & check again 20 minutes later.

Soft returns are not difficult.

Bjorkdidit · 25/09/2026 13:53

I always forget that if you press return it doesn't move to the next line like in an email but it sends the message. So then I have to type the question really fast so they don't think I'm a lunatic who randomly sends people Teams messages for no reason.

BreezyClouds · 25/09/2026 13:43

I don't mind too much but I won't reply until they've asked for what they want, or it's someone I would generally chat to.

I only check teams when I'm not actively doing something otherwise I'd find it disruptive if someone was just saying hi and waiting.

I'm not working today but just logged in to check something. 13 unread teams messages. I bloody hope they're asking for something not just saying hello and waiting.

I do consider it rude to get someone's attention when you don't know if they're busy then make them interact before telling them what you want. We need to be able to prioritise.

I have a friend who'll text 'are you free on Wednesday' then wait for a response. This is the same, I might be free but that doesn't mean I want to give my time to your thing. Tell me what it is rather than putting me on the spot.

nomas · 25/09/2026 13:31

OMG yes!

CONSOLIDATE your thoughts, people! I've now stopped replying until they ask me what they want. Unless it's my boss.

MiddleAgedDread · 25/09/2026 13:10

I have a colleague (well sort of colleague, he's semi-retired and now works remotely as and when on a zero hours contract for us), who has a habit of messaging "Hello MiddleAgedDread" and when you reply he just calls. It's only ever a social catch-up or he's scouting around looking for work (which I'm unlikely to have anything to pass onto him), but I just wish he'd ask if i'm free for a catch up first!! He used to do the same thing when he came in the office, turn up announced every few months and then expect you have to time free to chat!

LiuBei · 25/09/2026 13:07

Ugh, I have moved to a country where it is considered incredibly rude to not do this. I hate it. If you ask for the thing you need in your first message, people will respond "hey, how are you" and then only once you have said how you are will they answer your actual question. I hate it (but otherwise, wonderful country)
