Swimming parties for little children are the absolute worst kind of party

I love swimming, whether it’s swimming lengths alone, swimming with the kids, lazing in the pool on holiday. It’s my favourite exercise and I regularly hire the local small, WARM, private pools for family to play. HOWEVER. Swimming parties for younger children are the absolute worst and I think it’s so inconsiderate of parents to organise them. We have been invited to a Y1 age swimming party where parents must also be in the water. It’s so awful on multiple counts and I wish they’d be banned!

  1. our leisure centre is freezing. The water is freezing. The air is freezing. You can’t get in and warm up with proper swimming or do lengths or anything because the kids just want to stand in the shallow bit and splash
  2. I don’t want to hang out nearly naked with dads I don’t know
  3. The leisure centre smells or urine and I don’t want verrucas
  4. Many parents feel very uncomfortable standing around awkwardly in swimwear with parents they don’t know
  5. Pressure to shave and sort bikini line, lest the other parents bitch about you (I’ve seen that happen)
  6. Not all of us have spare adults to go in our place

These parents do swimming parties every year (even when their kid was 3!!) and they get family help so they don’t need to get in. They’re not even ‘making the memories’ with their kids. Party child mum is always beautifully made up, meanwhile we will all look sodden and bare faced, stinking of chlorine.

I have taken the eldest to a Y5(ish) party before, at a shallow pool. We didn’t have to get in, we watched carefully and had nice chats. Marvellous.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk and if you’re thinking of doing this for your kids, don’t. There are hundreds of other possibilities that children and grown ups alike will love. Drop offs preferred 😂

Watch the motherland episode on iPlayer.

Hahahaha!!

This, exactly

Thankfully when mine went to swimming parties the pool was otherwise closed and you didn’t have to get in the water with them!

Just don’t go 😆

seahorsessky · Yesterday 01:00

I loved swimming parties as a kid, but wouldn't do one as I get they're not inclusive-some parents and kids couldn't go.
Have attended some, and couldn't care less if any of the adults judge me with dripping messy hair after.

NeverDropYourMooncup · Yesterday 01:09

I was spared the ordeal due to a child who seemed to develop rabies at the thought.

I eventually managed to get her to successfully stand in the little pool instead of attempt to flay me alive once she was about 9, by which point they'd gone out of fashion.

Yiu can say no

Ireolu · Yesterday 08:37

We have our first one tmrw. Kids are 9/10 yo though.

LaurieFairyCake · Yesterday 08:41

I would never go to this. I don’t go in freezing council pools ever. Just bleurgh.

Only a few needed to volunteer to go in!! I hope they got special parent sized goodie bags as thanks!

This instantly brings some sort of Hunger Games type scenario for the ‘volunteering’!

runnerducky · Yesterday 08:49

May this type of party never find me 🙏

My sister hired her daughter's primary school swimming pool to do this when our sons were 4...there were about 15 kids. My sister had made me feel a right moany cow when I'd voiced concern about getting in the pool with a load of strangers so off I went in my bikini. NONE OF THE MUMS WENT IN!! I this lone woman in a bikini with about 15 men! It was mid November and all. Not impressed. My sister didn't even|n go in!!

VividDeer · Yesterday 09:09

No way. From year 5 and only if no non swimmers in friend group

It’s actually quite depressing how many women are teaching their sons and daughters that it’s normal for women to be so insecure about their bodies that they can’t be seen until they have the “perfect” one, while doing very little to change anyway.

Meanwhile, dads just… go in the pool?

I don’t have a solution, but I do think we’re sending girls a damaging message. Too many are encouraged to being put off sport, while sporty girls and women don’t think twice about putting on shorts or a swimsuit and getting on with it.

I know the thread is light-hearted, but the general idea that “mum mustn’t be seen” is very depressing.

EndorsingPRActice · Yesterday 09:51

just don't go. fortunately our local council pool is so much better than yours, sounds grim.

SeaGlassDreamer · Yesterday 11:13

Dh took Ds to one swimming party and said it felt dangerous and after that we declined all swimming party invitations. I felt guilty for the birthday child but I’m not spending my precious weekends doing something I dislike intensely.

FortyFacedFuckers · Yesterday 11:19

Thankfully this was not a thing where I live when DS was small, the swimming parties didn’t start until they were old enough to go on themselves! I was really body self conscious when DS was young so I would never have stood in a swimming costume with the parents from his class.

I wouldn't go.

Yeah.
It's an invitation not a summons.
If enough people don't go the mum will soon get the hint.

Shame for the birthday kid though.

lol put like that...

AnneShirleyBlythe · Yesterday 18:32

DS1 had a swimming party at a water park! But he was turning 11 I think! Parents dropped & ran & kids had a ball. No way is it suitable for under 9/10ish. Also why are the birthday kids parents not in the water? Weird!!

That sounds brilliant and the sort of party I can get on board with. Or those inflatable assault courses - once they’re old enough to manage it themselves. I think I’d even enjoy joining in myself!
It’s the standing around with little ones, freezing your tits off, that I just can’t get on board with. Awful!

but people feel bad declining (for their own kid or birthday boy), so they’ll accept, send dad instead where possible, and these people will keep organising these awful events

I am very conscious of this and have begrudgingly accepted, and will wear my swimsuit in a completely normal way next week. For me though, it’s not about body insecurity, I still feel uncomfortable standing around talking to people I don’t really know in what almost feels like underwear. It just feels weird. If we were actually properly in the water then it would make more sense in the context, but because of the kids’ ages and the shit choice of pool, that won’t happen!

I don’t know the solution either, but I certainly wouldn’t choose a party for my DC that makes their parents feel horribly self conscious, or physically uncomfortable (cold and wet)!

Why would you do a swimming party when most of the kids won't be able to swim (I would assume, at Y1) and they'll be too young for you to also hire the inflatables etc (again, I'm assuming, as they have to be 8 and able to swim 20m to go to the fun sessions at our local pool)? One of my kids would love it tbf but if she suggested it I'd point out it wouldn't be any fun for half her friends, and that'd be it.

Yes, this happened to me! There seemed to be an unspoken rule that only dads go, which obviously I didn’t find out until I arrived. I didn’t know any of them!

My other objection is that I don’t even think little Jonny asks for these parties every year, I think it’s the parents’ choice entirely. Not that many children request the exact same party every year from age 3. He never looks that into it!

Exactly, if they just wait a bit longer then it would be so much more fun for everyone 🤷‍♀️
