AIBU to think news coverage of AI has become relentlessly alarming

Every single news programme trying to terrify us about AI. It hardly got a mention a year or two ago and now it's going to kill us all in 10 years or something to that effect. If a robot is going to come and do my housework then great. If it might rebel and kill me then well that's a problem. It's all a bit depressing. I can see why folk stop watching the news. I used the suggested title.

I wish we had so much scaremongering when social media started up, then we might have actually regulated big tech. Its likely regulation will be the future but only after a generation sacrificed. The tech giants have been playing God with how society works for so long with no accountability. I'm scared by it but it infuriates me when people talk about it coming and we can't stop it..it's not a bloody alien invasion. It's an advance in tech that easily could have been adjusted or banned or regulated years ago.

It's not all bad news. The biggest impact wont be the world ending, it will.be the world changing. Imagine what our world would be like if the computer hadn't been invented. That is the magnitude of change that A.I will bring.

I'm more worried about the amount about of scams and hackings there will be, that will really ramp up

I nearly avoided the lunchtime news but had a quick peek. Ai again. The Pope is visiting France at this very moment and giving an urgent speech on guess what. AI. I'd have thought he had better things to worry about.

If AI takes all our jobs, then people will stop buying stuff because they have no money to spend and capitalism will implode.

It's better for people to talk about the dangers of AI now rather than sleepwalk into them.

I don't know about robots killing us, but AI gives cyber hackers an even better arsenal to attack organisations with. Industry leaders are genuinely worried and spending money to counteract it.

My advice is to avoid the news.
I do this and I’m much less anxious as a result.

Did you also notice that in 2018 there was barely any mention of covid?

Then suddenly a year later, there were all those alarming reports despite nothing before

Tbh I think it’s about time. I’m glad people are talking about the downsides. Just hope that something will be done.

Whenever I get upset about the news I read several sources of news to get different perspectives. I find it helps.
