Anyway, of course Santa exists otherwise why the hell are we all filling stockings and seeing Santa decorations everywhere in December?? Santa the concept is 100% real and I won’t hear anything otherwise.

To be honest on Christmas Eve we have normally had a full on day so we’re tired, I’m normally snoring my 9:45. I did warn him the first year he came for Christmas that my mum takes it very seriously. She used to do window dressing and set design so any holiday that involves decorating is run like a military operation. Both my parents are eccentric so he knows what to expect, and he also likes the fact we don’t really have to do much apart from wash dishes on Christmas Day. His family also do gifts very differently (his parents just give him money) and he got a bit emotional the first year because he’d never had a Christmas stocking since he was like 10 and she had put a lot of thought into it.

I'm with you OP, a very odd decision by a) whoever wrote it and b) by Lidl to stock it.

Do you just go up to your room, or have you got to have lights out? You're lucky your DH goes along with it. I like that Christmas has changed through the years, as my children and grandchildren (youngest 9) have grown. I wouldn't be ready to end my Christmas Eve at 9.30.

@Allseeingallknowing not everyone does stockings. For a 7+ child who thinks a lot, none of it makes sense. Younger children don't necessarily question things.
Admittedly I'm not from a UK background and a big thing wasn't made of Santa. I did Christmas Eve gift bags. Now we don't do adult presents. But because we work across Health/SS etc we often did our Christmas meet up on another day.
Just scribble over that question if the children still believe. If Christmas isn't about presents, Santa features the way the Easter bunny does, as a fairytale figure.

Ah, that's a shame. I think YANBU, OP. If young kids believe, it's part of the magic for them and it shouldn't be ripped away before they're ready.

For birthdays, we don't always do presents in the morning but one year we had to, so I laid the gifts out for my daughter to wake up to. She said "this is just like when Santa comes!" 😬 I think I just mumbled "oh is it?" while thinking damn, can't do that again! 🤣

I think the age when they start to realise these financial disparities will roughly align with the age they would stop believing in Santa anyway.

My mum does this, I’m 27 and married with my own children. She enforces the 9:30 bed rule on Christmas Eve for me and my husband, because it’s obviously Santa has to arrange the Christmas presents aesthetically. It’s crazy that Santa wraps them in the exact colour scheme of the house, that man’s got a keen eye for colour! Honestly it’s kind of silly but it’s really fun and I know how much she absolutely loves doing it. It still feels magical.

I’m not, but it doesn’t make sense to me to say to children that Santa brings all the presents, especially as he’s supposed to bring them to children who have been good. How do you explain to a child that Johnny next door gets a huge pile of presents, bike etc ?
whereas he only has a few, and has been good? Would seem very unfair to the child!
Surely it’s better to say Santa fills the Christmas stocking, and the other presents are from the family, who can explain why the child has fewer presents than Johnny.

Every year there is a post from English posters bemoaning the "Americanisation" of Father Christmas, they won't accept that term was never used in large parts of the UK.

When I asked my Mum if he was real she said “ well I’ve always thought if you stop believing he might not come so I’ve never risked it!” He came to my parents house until my Mum died when I was 44. It created so many happy memories and laughter.
