AIBU to stop helping neighbours after they involved their son?

I’ve been helping out my neighbors for around 3 years now. They go on holiday about 5-7 times each year. I have always helped them out for free because I’m genuinely not bothered about a payment.

It started off really easy. At first I just fed the cat, changed its water and scooped the litter tray. Then they added treats to this, fine easy. Then they added putting the bins out. Then they added watering the plants on the front and back porch. Then they got 3 huge flower beds installed so I also had to water those. Then the cat needed medication. This was a step too far and I said that I wasn’t going to do that again, but that I was still willing to help everything else.

Anyway, moving on to last year. Through my job I found out that their adult son is a level 3 sex offender. At first I was absolutely horrified and wasn’t sure what to do. As he doesn’t live there, and very rarely ever visits, and any know convictions were from 20 years ago, I decided that I wasn’t going to hold it against them so I didn’t say anything.

Moving forward to Tuesday night and the neighbors ask me to cat sit on Thursday. They only ever give me a few days notice when they are going away as they know I’ll look after the cat. Anyway, they said that another neighbor was going to come and do the medication and could I do everything else. I’m guessing that they still wanted me to do the rest so that they didn’t have to pay the other lady. I was fine with that and agreed. However, an hour later they then text again and said that she could no longer do it and that their son (name) was going to do the medication instead. I said I absolutely was not going to visit the cat if he was going to be there.

So here’s my issue. They were willing to have me, a lone woman, shut inside a house with a bloody level 3 sex offender. All the while with them thinking that I’m blissfully unaware that he’s some disgusting human being. Surely even if you’ve personally forgiven your child for their crimes, you still have a duty of care not to put a lone woman in a vulnerable position?! I’m wanting to post the key back and never help them again. I couldn’t sleep on Tuesday night and my behavior was extremely erratic yesterday, because I just kept wondering how the hell someone could do that me, even more so when I’ve done so much for them.

So why does part of me feel guilty for not helping them ever again? Really I know that I’m not being unreasonable, but I still have this stupid guilty thing that is niggling at me.

I’m sorry I don’t know what that means.

Thats what I was thinking.

Gemilo · 25/09/2026 08:22

Would there be posters up in the OP’s work warning people about him if it was 20 years ago?

Sounds a bit vigilante justice to me.

But anyway aside from that, OP, you would not be unreadable to pull back from all you’ve been doing- cite personal reasons, don’t have to mention the son (or can just refer in passing to how fortunate it is that their son can help out now since you have some personal things going on).

She's in the US.

Which explains the published and printed photos of people convicted of sexual offences, it would be very unusual here

Chefpig · 25/09/2026 08:23

They sound like cheeky fuckers regardless adding other stuff for you to do, OP, and now this.

Why can't their son do it all?

PatNoodle · 25/09/2026 08:23

ThreadGuardDog · 25/09/2026 08:13

And if not in the public domain OP will have put herself in a very vulnerable position because she found out about their son via her work. There will be data protections and confidentiality in place to protect from exactly the kind of thing OP is doing. In my profession it’s gross misconduct and instant dismissal.

Edited

OP has already said she's in the US and she didn't do anything dodgy at work to find out, it was in a newspaper.

Gemilo · 25/09/2026 08:22

Bernadinetta · 25/09/2026 06:48

This is what I was wondering. How long after a conviction does someone count as being high risk of reoffending.

Would there be posters up in the OP’s work warning people about him if it was 20 years ago?

CatherinedeBourgh · 25/09/2026 08:21

Even if their son was an angel fallen straight from heaven, if he's coming to do the medication the least he could do is do everything and give you a break for once!

The level of taking for granted is off the scale.

lanthanum · 25/09/2026 08:18

"Great news that your son can help with the cat. If he's going to be visiting anyway, presumably he can do the feeding/watering too. I've got a lot on at the moment so that would be a weight off my mind. I'll pop your key back. Have a good holiday!"

They have got me some small gifts from their holidays a few times. They have done that about 5 times over the years. I really don’t mind having anything in return, that’s not why I do it. It’s just the awful realisation that they just don’t respect me as a person at all. I can’t imagine putting someone in such a vulnerable position. I’m sure the chances of me being attacked are low, but still, he has done it multiple times before.

They have never respected you and they take you for granted. They wouldn't take advantage of you if they respected you. They will not think twice about leaving you alone with their son.

Do you mean YANBU?

Yes! Don't know what happened there - I can't even blame a typo. Autocorrect? Anyway, she's definitely Not Being Unreasonable!

Luckyforsome23 · 25/09/2026 08:14

Do they have keys to your house (including from before you lived there). If so you might want to change the locks.

ThreadGuardDog · 25/09/2026 08:13

Greenhippos · 25/09/2026 07:26

If she asks and you decide to speak just say it’s common knowledge that he is a sex offender and you were happy to help until they said he would be present.

If it’s in the public domain then people will be aware and some will remember it from when it occurred.

And if not in the public domain OP will have put herself in a very vulnerable position because she found out about their son via her work. Honestly, thank you! I think I needed to hear this. Sometimes I’m terrible at drawing boundaries with people. It’s strange though because I can be very outspoken when I need to be.

I think you have been very kind to your neighbours and by stealth, they have gradually taken advantage of your good nature. Regardless of the son. Sounds like now is a good time to stop.

ThreadGuardDog · 25/09/2026 08:06

Dragononawagon · 25/09/2026 00:04

Are you absolutely sure of your facts- sure you’ve got the right person etc? And is there any chance this could cause trouble for you at work?

I would probably just say I’m not able to help anymore so it’s great news their son can do it. Ditto next time.

This is what l was wondering too. If OP has discovered this through her employment then surely there will be confidentiality/data protection protections. If she discloses to her neighbour - or anyone else for that matter - that she knows about their son, there could be very serious consequences. I’d be re-thinking this thread too.

I work in criminal justice what do you mean by level 3 sex offender? If it was 20 years ago he won't be a current MAPPA nominal and that's the only place I am aware of levels and categories he'd have been cat 1 anyway

She's in the US.

This is what I was wondering. How long after a conviction does someone count as being high risk of reoffending.

I'd assume he's still regarded as high risk unless / until an up to date comprehensive assessment says otherwise?

Thats unforgivable of them to be completely honest. They either obviously have their blinkers on and still believe their son is innocent of said crimes, or they selfishly put their holiday and cat above your safety because you are just not a priority to them.

Whatever their reason, keep your distance. Their sex-offending son, no doubt not working, can do all the jobs for them or they stay at home.

How did you find about their son anyway?

Sunbringer · 25/09/2026 07:49

If their son is there he can do the other things too.

You can easily change your vote. Just tap the other bar that you meant to click.

Im using Safari and it won’t do it.

I’ve accidentally clicked that you are being unreasonable and I do apologise because you are absolutely not at all. I’m so sorry that they put you in this position.

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 25/09/2026 07:39

Yanbu at all.

You do not owe them anything. You especially do not owe them an explanation and you do not owe them any guilt for saying no.

If they have the means to go on holiday that much they have the means to pay a professional service to come and do all the things they want doing. They are CFs who have been exploiting your good nature and asking too much.

The best thing to do is to say no you can't without further apology or explanation.

If you feel you have to elaborate then you can say that it doesn't work for you because their list of things they need doing is too much for you and their proposed solution of therefore dividing the work between you and someone else doesn't work for you because you would feel vulnerable and unsafe sharing the responsibilities with whoever they get to take on the rest of the work, so they need to appoint someone who can do all of it.

Bikenutz · 25/09/2026 07:39

I would write something like:

After giving it some thought I’ve decided that I won’t be able to help with cat sitting or house-sitting duties going forward.

I’ve been happy to help over the last few years, but I’m no longer able to take this on and have decided it’s best I step back completely. I will drop the key back to you at a convenient time.

I wish you and your cat all the best, and I hope you’re able to find alternative arrangements for future trips.

Best Wishes

Ethelspagetti · 25/09/2026 07:37

That’s awful of them to not care about your safety but only their needs. I’d stop completely with the favours going forward. I’m glad you knew about the son to have that foresight that others may not.
