That it's a massive waste of time, effort, money, lives and we should just bring them over by coach and ferry.

I have just watched the video from earlier today/yesterday of a migrant boat departing Boulogne. The one where the Dad (presumably) ditches his toddler in the sea in order to get onto the boat. The kid was instantly picked up by French emergency workers and it struck me that this whole situation is completely bizarre.

There were approximately half a dozen lifeguards around the boat on jet skis and paddle boards, probably also a load of police out of frame. The boat will then be shadowed by French coastguard vessels until halfway across the channel, at which point border force/RNLI will pick them up and bring them to the UK. They will then be greated by coaches, a couple of hundred riot police and some (redacted by MNHQ) before continuing to their destination.

AIBU to think that this is all a total farce and we should simply provide the coaches from the outset?

YABU - The current arrangement is best.

YANBU - Coach and ferry would be better for everyone.

I don't. That's why I said presumably.

But the AIBU was regarding the resources expended on shepherding these boats across the channel rather than the leaving of the child behind.

Do you think it would be better to provide coaches from France rather than the south coast of England? Thus avoiding all the dinghy palaver.

no, I don't

OP - how do you know it was the toddler's Dad? Could be completely unrelated (although still awful)

I am really surprised that the EU has not centralised this migrant issue by arranging a central location where migrants are directed to e.g. perhaps setting up and paying a lower-income EU country to facilitate it. Any migrants who turn up in the UK etc. can be sent over there whilst being processed. Each EU country could pay into it.

Once there, the EU could decide where they are going and make sure all EU countries take their fair share. The UK could be part of this arrangement. After all, they are escaping war and danger right so they won't mind where they are sent. If they don't like it there, they can go back home.

I have no idea what the answer is. But how desperate must these people be to attempt such a dangerous crossing on a small boat? I often wonder, what if the UK had a catastrophic event and we had to flee to another country? I'm not sure I'd have the bollocks to attempt such a journey, but what would be the alternative?

...and to be told NO when / IF you got to your destination!

EU countries are dealing with similar. Hence some putting in restrictive policies.

At least they have money and a plan. We seem to be getting there but slowly.

Our main issue is greedy men starting wars in other countries and making people refugees and their own countries inhospitable. Then right wing people wang on about making women and kids take the trip, so then they wang on about it all being men... The men who matter don't give a monkeys and just want the land.

The issue with this is you’d not be able to supply enough places for the demand.

I don't know about that lots of new builds going up where we are while schools are closing and we are told we have the lowest birthrates coming up so more schools will likely have to close from the state sector. We don't seem to have enough people buying the local properties already there so unsure why we need 6k more yet they keep building...

Let's just rejoin EU. Would have quite a few extra perks back at the same time.

What legitimate channels?

You can't apply for asylum from outside the UK
Hence all...this

But this is the whole point: they are coming from France, so they are no longer asylum seekers; they are economic migrants. There's nothing wrong with wanting to move to a more prosperous country to better your and your family's lives... but you obviously need to apply through the legitimate channels.

Wearyied · 25/09/2026 13:48

Do they get flats etc in france, do they get immediate benefits?

Can they get jobs?

Do we take their fingerprints to check of they are known criminals?

Our LA is in financial trouble again. We already pay over 2k for a small 3 bed semi. Its over 7% of post tax average persons wage. Then theres rent.

I think the tv licence etc is the rumblings people are pretty fed up. No its not the fault of economoc migrants but its forcing the population to grow. So eg the LA is boildong on green elt but then also usong our money to build all the new roads and schools. just very locally 45 extra school spaces ic 4k each thats 180k not to mention the costs of enlarging buildings. 2k is a lot just for bin collection. Is actually 38 a week. (Bear in mind so much recycling that actual bins are 3 weeks) and we pay separately for green garden waste...
And then also the pension increase age for 3yrs men and 8 women so 11years. Its more than some have in their pensions.

In fact overall France takes more, both in net numbers and per capita. UK is around 10th or 11th placed by head of population for numbers of asylum seekers. It's a myth that "they don't want to stay in France" because many do.

But the ones who don't want to stay in France (or whom they turn away for whatever reason) are the ones that concern us. They've reached a safe, prosperous country and decided that they prefer a different one instead - so they are very obviously economic migrants; and thus they are no longer in any way justified in turning up as though they were still asylum seekers.

Economic migrants have to apply to the country that they wish to move to and wait for them to accept them. I imagine that, when making the decision as to whether or not to accept a would-be economic migrant's application, a country would instantly take a very dim view of somebody who had tried to force their way in illegally, in conjunction with criminal gangs. It's a bit like randomly turning up and demanding a job interview (without applying or being invited) steaming drunk and expecting them to choose you over all of the other sober, polite, well-presented candidates who did apply through the proper channels.

So ... like having a legal route to claim asylum in the UK from overseas? So that desperate people don't have to pay thousands to people traffickers and risk their lives in the channel? I mean ... yes this seems like an obvious choice to me. No hotel or barracks accommodation needed while applications are processed, so that's a cost saving. People who are approved arrive by legal means and immediately get a job and start paying tax, also great. We get to balance out our ageing population.

The issue with this is you’d not be able to supply enough places for the demand.

Ablondiebutagoody · 24/09/2026 20:55

That's my point though. There isn't any border control. It seems that anybody who can scrape a couple of grand together can jump on a boat and be escorted here at great effort and expense by the French and UK Governments. Why not cut out the whole English Channel charade and let the migrants get a coach from France instead?

Can they try getting a coach back the other way instead of into here and that poor coach driver that would have to transport them aswell god help him and his life

ThisUmberSwan · 25/09/2026 13:22

I don’t want them in our country so no they can continue risking their life on boats in my opinion I don’t want them around my children taking over our towns and houses. There is plenty of safe country’s on the way to ours so why are they heading for us. I’ve not long driven past a hotel in my area they are all sat on the grass fsce covering for no reason they aren’t here for good reasons just selfish ones why can’t they stay and fight for their own country

If you can pay the traffickers then you can buy a plane ticket and enter the country safely and not put other people at risk when they have to rescue you.

Sure but you can't just get on a plane without a visa. You can't apply for asylum from your home country. So it's actually not that simple.

Are you not aware of this? Carriers are heavily fined if they bring in anyone without permission to enter UK.

Anyone who supports this utter nonsense clearly does not have girls. I have two teenage girls. This worries the life out of me. And no clearly not all are a danger but we have seen and continue to see what some are.

They should not be here at all./ What other country can you come into like this? It is an utter joke...although completely unfunny.

I mean..all of them?

The Berlin wall had barbed wire, snipers, dogs, booby traps - and people still got across.

It is ridiculous. It is a farce. Throwing open the gates isn't the answer, though at least that would be a more honest approach. Can't make it to too easy for people to see the unpalatable truth, though.

Ignoring the news is good for temporary escape, on an individual basis, but someone has to pay attention or there's no hope at all. Someone has to try to bring sanity and common sense back to the world, and I hope people don't vote if they've decided not to stay informed.

Thank you!

Dameputtingonabraveface · 24/09/2026 22:05

@moonraker0-and how does this really impact on you personally? In the whole massive scheme of things facing this country those people will not tip things over the edge. If you were born in Syria (for example) and needed to get yourself and your family out and spend everything you had and take that huge leap of faith that you and your family would be safe, not be at risk because you happened to be born where you were, what would you do? Because birth is a lottery. A lot of people coming to the UK are doing so because it is not safe where they live, and often our foreign policy has played a huge part in that. I cannot even begin to understand what is like be in that position, because as much as I deplore UK politics over the last decade, I am very privileged and this has never been the reality for my family.

Glad you asked. I’ve had them housed in my area for a while and I’m terrified for my Dd and nieces because they are groups of men who hang around trying to talk to young girls and befriend them. This country is currently a lottery because right now they are being dumped in the poor areas and anytime there’s a slight mention of them going to one of the richer areas there’s uproar so don’t talk to me about birth being a lottery when certain areas in this country are fast becoming no go ghettos.

I think even unsafe countries have safe parts. I was surprised that a friend of mine has just been in Ukraine for work!

I’d be surprised as well considering the FCDO are advising against travelling to all of Ukraine. Very irresponsible of the employer and difficult to get travel insurance.
