AIBU to feel set up to fail in a hybrid role?

Getofftheshitter · 24/09/2026 15:39

Firstly, I am already looking for a new job because this place is going to hell in a handbasket.

I recently started a new job – I am experienced in my role and have done it for several years. I was hired on a hybrid basis, 4 days in the office and one at home. All fine, except in the 2 months I have been there I have worked one day at home as the Ops Manager (not my direct manager but a company director so big cheese) keeps finding excuses for why he needs me in the office on my wfh day. In reality he barely speaks to me, doesn’t need me in the office and just doesn’t agree with wfh. He’s like this with everyone who tries to wfh, not just me.

I can live with being in the office. What I can’t live with with is not being able to do my job because I am not allowed on teams meetings because it is “too disruptive”. I manage a tech team of multiple disciplines. I am the only person of my job role in my team, but there are 5 across the organisation, one in each team and we are all experiencing this issue. Only my job role from the tech department are office based, the others are remote workers, therefore my entire team is working remotely and I have no other way to get in touch other than teams and email. The office is large open plan with 3 meeting rooms and no ‘cubbys’ for taking calls. There are a number of different departments in the office – customer care, sales, marketing, operations etc. Their whole teams are office based.

Understandably I cannot take up a meeting room for the entire time I am on calls – I have been told this is not a solution. I am having to do everything via email which is time consuming and quite frankly ridiculous – we do loads of demos and live drawings and discussions, I should literally be spending my day in calls with various different people and I just cant. As a result I am not being effective, my team are complaining they can’t get info and decisions off me and I am just completely out the loop – as a result the team is making mistakes, work is delayed etc. It’s a shit show.

I have spoken with my manager (home based) and he has spoken to his manager (hybrid) my manager is understanding but powerless to change the situation – he is also the other of my roles managers and confirmed they all have the same problem. His manager has said “everyone else is coping, we just need to get on with it” basically inferring we are just trying to wfh so we can slack off. I’ve suggested the 5 of my job role take up one of the meeting rooms all together, like a mini- office for us, and that is not acceptable, I’ve suggested they put us all in a far corner, away from others – also not acceptable. I’ve asked for solutions from them and been told “email” or get people in the office. I am not able to get them in the office, they have wfh, remote contracts and are based country wide (and in other countries).

I just don’t know what to do!

WIBU to just stop doing my job and wait to be fired? They don’t seem to care.

It does sound very oppressive OP, I’m just confused why you think that not getting your 1 day a week wfh is the thing making you fail. If 50% of your role is in teams calls/meetings then even a day at home won’t resolve that. I might be misunderstanding. Regardless you have my sympathy, such a shame to start a new job and find the culture or expectations are mental. Many of us have experienced similar. On the bright side, you’ll be able to find something else soon and you can easily explain the blip on your CV because I’ll bet there will be rumours about your current employer in the industry already.

mumumental · Yesterday 08:16

If you were hired as a hybrid and your contract says so, they need to let you.

RandomMess · Yesterday 07:48

My short term suggestion is that all the PMs book a room to have a 3 hours face to face meeting in which each of you makes calls to your teams. The situation you are all in is nuts!

Getofftheshitter · Yesterday 07:43

Lilythepink99 · Yesterday 07:39

I have read all the thread and it is nuts and I am sorry you have to put up with this as life is so short! But you don’t have the service for constructive dismissal. The qualifying period is still 2 years. You are in probation and they can end it at any time. Although the new employment laws are in and have reduced the time employers can dismiss this doesn’t help you. Get that new job an move on. The glass door them!

Thanks for that info, really helpfuI. I only remembered about glass door yesterday, the reviews consistently state upper management as being very difficult, the office being oppressive and treatments of staff poor. Seems to be the last 12 months it has gone particular bad, makes me wonder why.

Thanks to those who work in similar roles/ fields who have confirmed this is all bat shit and for those who have given advice on how to resolve this.

I've contacted ACAS and will see what they say and in the meantime I'm documenting it all.

If PMs have not allowed to be present on meetings for the past 3 months… how come you were allowed to for the first fortnight?

Youneedas · Yesterday 07:21

You’ve made it to Reddit!

Youneedas · Yesterday 07:21

Youneedas · Yesterday 07:20

The lack of insight is just shocking.

The founder and owner of this company knows his business. This is a very successful business. Presumably established years ago.
You have been there a few weeks.

All these meetings have been allowed to go ahead as normal. The one change - you’ve been banned. Most people would look inwards. Not blame the incredibly successful business owner 😆

You said the PMs have not been allowed in on meetings for 3 months. Ie before you arrived

Yes, they are going ahead but without a PM. Some the PM is supposed to lead but most are joint discussions.

Youneedas · Yesterday 07:18

OP - after a fortnight you have been effectively shut out of meetings that are still thriving and going ahead. Surely that tells you that people have complained… surely??

Getofftheshitter · Yesterday 07:16

Youneedas · Yesterday 06:33

So for the first fortnight you were allowed free reign and implemented

We have stand up every morning (which I'm supposed to run). Each week I do 4-5 meetings called "3 amigos" where we discuss the specifics of the work each person is going to be doing, they ask questions about it etc. I do 3 fortnightly meetings with the whole team. I do demo meetings a few times a week, 1:1s monthly with each member of my team and "leads catch up" once a week with all the leads of all disciplines and a once weekly planning meeting with my team. A weekly design meeting.

and then the big boss stopped it?

My guess - your team complained about all the meetings being rammed in to their diaries. I have to say… your meetings plan sounds like something out of the 1990s.

If the team had complained, how come the meetings continue to go ahead and I can watch the recordings?

No, I wasn't allowed free range.

Week 1 - sat with my boss or another PM and we went through processes, I joined meetings with them, did my onboarding etc.

Week 2 - day 1, asked not to take calls at my desk, day 2 WFH and told off, day 3&4 did calls in a meeting room, day 5 told I was away from my desk.

Other people in the same line of work have said the level of meetings is normal in tech. Plus it's not my boss who has said I can't have the meetings AND the meetings are continuing to go ahead without me, I'm just not in them live, I'm watching them afterwards.

The OP has said that all these meetings were in the diary before she joined.

I agree it sounds like a lot but this is typical for agile working.

Whyherewego · Yesterday 06:21

I honestly cannot believe some of the advice on this thread.
OP please ignore all these people who have clearly never worked in tech or done project management. Trying to PM agile development teams without being able to actually talk to them or attend the stand-ups etc is not possible. This owner is ridiculous and doesn't understand what he's asking you to do. Having people present in a silent office banning calls is just weird.
At least you know you're not going mad and the others think so too!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Yesterday 05:38

Sad to say I know a few companies like this. One is a huge international big 4 accountancy firm. I was told by my neighbour after I’d left and he’d left that he hated it there and would never have joined (as a contractor) had he known what he was getting himself into). It’s not even just that, in some internal depts of large international companies there are serious flaws, yet they’re all brushed under the carpet at interviews and when you start it all becomes clear. They keep employees on who are a liability and in the real world in one case, would have been fired/disciplined etc. One female senior lawyer had such anger issues she broke her own desk and had been know to throw things at people. Yet she still worked there! And basically then you’re supposed to tiptoe round these psychos and placate them and unwind with a team lunch in the staff canteen (god I hated those!) or at a local bar. Gin is a cure all! Joke.

OP, I’d get out and leave. Sadly in these organisations nothing changes or doesn’t for years and they just have unhappy employees. I’ve seen it time and time again in contracts. It’s actually worrying how so many companies get away with treating their staff like this.

I'd love to live in the rainbowland so many posters on this thread clearly live in, where employers never do anything wrong and probation periods come with great qualifications Grin

But back in the real world, OP, I suggest continuing as your colleagues were and doing enough to keep getting paid, while mainly focusing your attention on finding somewhere better.

WaryCyanStork · Yesterday 02:23

Realworld10 · 25/09/2026 21:49

Well I assumed, being on probation, it means training, mentoring and observations/feedback on performance?

I have replied to another comment in further detail that I do understand your circumstances and have given my own experience.

This being new, it's far too easy to say 'toxic' and this is where I question the understanding of my advice because you do need to need to listen to others more experienced and not just throw out the latest catch word. I've spent this time to help and I'm done. Please digest meaningful help comments and not the throw in your future from the others suggesting go to start a battle who won't win but can take it up later in a more adult way.

What do you think a probation period is? Confused

LimitedAddition · Yesterday 01:53

This post has attracted so many people who are completely out of touch… and yet still insist on giving the OP useless, mad and condescending advice! Very frustrating for the OP.

Anyway, even if it wasn’t for the ban on calls, I can’t see how anyone could be happy working in the place you describe. The culture is absolutely toxic. Hope you find something (much) better soon.

Wooky073 · Yesterday 01:19

At this stage I would be putting everything in writing (email) that they are asking you to do or not do, emailed to the person copying in x y z peron as appropriate.

It sounds toxic and very poor practice. However there has to be company policies underpinning their actions. Often orgs forget the company policies. so id say time to start exploring them to find out what the company says within its policies. Get clarification from HR on your contract wording and how that applies in practice then state whats happening. You need to start gently calling it out. If nothing else you are starting an evidence trail that could be useful if you are dismissed. If its as ridiculous as you say then you could claim for 'constructive dismissal' if they have made your job impossible. Get advice from ACAS who provide free advice on employment related matters.
