The etiquette of a price sticker?

Can anyone help me settle this debate?

Is it necessary to remove the price stickers on gifts and cards before you give them to someone else?

YABU - Leave the price on, it doesn’t matter.

YANBU - Remove the price sticker, it’s the done thing.

I will have you know this is not just any basement...
Well insulated, carefully curated storage, temperature regulated air con and of course the in house librarian should we ever forget which drawer the small labels are in.

I peel off the price sticker.

Book shops put a sticker over the price if you ask for it even if you don't use their gift wrapping service.

I’d peel off anything that came off without ruining the tag or whatever but certainly don’t go to the lengths of covering prices with stickers or anything.

Hardback books used to have a snip-off triangle with the price, inside the paper cover. I don’t know nowadays.
But you ought to remove any indication of what you paid. It’s like putting a price on friendship.

This is about my MIL and SIL, who have never removed a price sticker from a card or gift in the 10 years I’ve known them.

I’ve always teased them about it and they think I’m utterly ridiculous for even noticing.

I can’t help but wince when I see the £1.99 sticker staring back at me from every card, but it’s become one of those silly little family things we have a laugh about.

My brother leaves the price sticker on and writes a comment about it - "How bloody much? It's only a bit of paper" or "I hope you appreciate the full 99p I spent on you" etc. He's a daft sod.

I take stickers off but never cover prices on books, that is insane and ruins the book!

I know. I don't even know @Hollowvoice certainly has more little stickers to cover the price on gifting books than I have (which is impressive) but I would be extremely anxious about damp. What about the adhesive gum?!

Actually putting something over a printed price on a book or something though is a little batshit crazy.

Price stickers should be removed from everything once they've served their purpose, regardless whether it's a present or not.

Especially pot plants that are expressly purchased to look nice - why would anyone leave a socking great bar code on them?!

No way should you give a card or present with the price sticker on!! I have a drawer full of little stickers to put over the printed price on books for just this reason.

i always remove a price sticker but it has never occurred to me to cover the printed price on a book!

I've never bothered doing anything with the price on books. As pp have said it probably doesnt reflect what was actually paid for a book these days because of places like Amazon, The Works etc.

Surely the printed price on a book is the RRP not necessarily what you paid for it? What sense is there in covering that up?

Yes remove price tag.
Though I've been caught out by shops who put the price on in two different places (as a sticker and also a tagged label), so I think I've removed it and then my mum/sister says sarcastically "oh you wanted me to know how much you spent, eh?"
