A bit off topic, but I have a question.....

Lots of people these days seem to have "perfect" glaringly white teeth.

I think they look ridiculous (a bit like clones) but that is my personal opinion, and I have a dental phobia so it's never going to be for me...but these teeth are not their actual teeth so any children aren't necessarily going to have perfect, ultra white teeth - I mean, they might, but then again they might not.

Are we going to come to a point when future generations are subjected to cosmetic dentistry so that they resemble their parents?

I realise that sounds a bit goady - it really isn't meant to be, just something that I occasionally ponder about. My basic understanding of genetics suggests that surely mass uptake of purely cosmetic treatments can't have any impact on the state of the teeth of future generations but maybe I'm wrong?

I dont think resemblance to parents is based on teeth.

@Deadleaves77

Yes, I'm not sure I did explain myself very well!

I didn't mean that children will want to look like their parents - I think I meant will parents want/need/expect to have children with "perfect" teeth - and at what point would/will they intervene over and above the obvious braces/good hygiene stuff.

To mangle the old MN phrase "we have lost sight of what normal dentition looks like"

I mean you can't have cosmetic dentistry done till your 18 anyway, so no no parent is going to be sending their 12yo off for a full set of turkey teeth. Anymore than parents with boob jobs sending their 11yos off for a new set of DDs. Theres potentially always going to be the odd unethical person but I think its a bit of a stretch to suggest parents are going to be crowning every tooth in a bid to look like them

OMG they’re so awful! Look like fake white plastic gnashes from a joke shop or something!
Not remotely natural looking.

I actually don't think he is bothered if they look natural or not !

GasPanic · 24/09/2026 13:34

It's a US look.

It has practical uses over there though, because it helps dazzle people when they're taking aim.

Im not sure I get your point. Obviously veneers/crowns arent going to affect the genetic make up of teeth?

No I dont think it will lead to children having cosmetic treatments to match their parents. Most people dont undergo cosmetic work to look similar to their parents?

Generally in a young person braces are all thats necessary to give a straight, white look and brushing anyway, and I think the trend is moving away from the blocky white look (thankfully)

I saw this. They’re not just blindingly, artificially white, they’re also almost comedic in their obvious fakeness. What was he thinking?

Katie Price's new set are absolutely ridiculous take up half her face.

I wonder if he got them free ? I don't follow him on SM but sometimes well known people get cosmetic/dental work free for advertising

I agree we shouldn’t denigrate people for their appearance but if you look back - his own teeth have always been absolutely fine, perfectly nice and he’s given himself full on scary gnashers now.

I find two lovely very famous welsh actors have such perfect teeth that they are actually distracting.

For anyone of an older vintage you may remember an early adopter of too white teeth - Clive Owen, he may have had them toned down since but ouch.

Agree. Realise we shouldn't judge others by their appearance but could've done with a sunglasses required warning before they threw to him 😎.
Like the beard though!

Agree-ish, but I think it would be a case of judging someone by their decisions and values, so I say go for it.

Venusunbroken · 24/09/2026 11:55

I thought they were dentures, genuinely

Hopefully its just a trend much like the botox trend
Which i really dont undestand aa it always looks very unatural imo.
