Where do you think Jewish people come from?

Antisemitism is at full volume at the moment and I caveat this post with saying that I have absolutely no wish to make Jewish MNers feel uncomfortable but as an an atheist with no connection to Israel this really makes my blood boil.

I see so many SM posts about the Jews having 'colonized' Israel and Judea & Samaria, not having any claim to the land, not being indigenous and of course being 'Europeans settlers'.

They can't answer where they actually come from though so I thought anyone on here who shares their views might be able to give an answer and how they came to that conclusion.

I understand that Jews are an ethnicity with Judaism as their religion. Being Jewish is not a religion. Jews are still today spread out all over the world with the majority living in Israel and the US.

This has come into focus since the UK Government sanctions on Jewish businesses in Judea & Samaria recently with Jewish communities living there classed as 'illegal settlers'.

It's almost as if Jews and Judea have no connection at all.

So AIBU to ask where the Jews originated from if not from there?

I don't feel this belongs on the CITME board as although the war in Gaza has amplified beliefs, this not directly about that.

That's incorrect and there is plenty of genetic evidence showing both Jews and Arabs as distinct ethnic groups.

Your post makes it sound like all the Jews left 2,000 years ago and then randomly decided to go back (not to mention belittling people's religious beliefs). That is incorrect. There have been Jews living as a minority in what is now Israel and the surrounding areas since the times of ancient Israel.

Given how living as a minority has usually resulted in persecution/expulsion/mass murder there was a growing movement to become independent (Zionism).

The right to self-determination is enshrined in the UN Charter for all peoples. That's all Zionism is; Jewish self-determination.

They didn’t self-determined. UN brought Jewish ppl there after WWII and gave them land, because there was no better option.

Why the inflammatory thread title?
Because here we have another person who hates Jews.

You could have just read my OP in the time it took you to type that.

To save you being confused, I stand with the Jews.

I used Ed Sheeran as an example of the Gaza situation presenting itself in forums unrelated to politics.
Macklemore should have kept his mouth shut.

Macklemore is just another two bit rapper who is involving himself in something he's not part of. Jewish people's right to exist means naff all during these wankers' morale crusades. Big gobs wearing keffiyehs aren't going to solve an unsolvable centuries old problem.

I seem to remember reading that ethnically there is little difference between Jewish and Arabic people. What I find ridiculous is that a group of people can claim a land on the basis they were given it by god thousands of years ago Whose god I wonder?
what would the world look
like today if countries were all restored to how they were 2 thousand years ago? Well goodbye Mr Trump to start with

I don’t think the Jewish scriptures say that plus even the koran identifies judea as the land of the jews, it even says god gave them that land.

Theres absolutely shit tons of archaeological evidence of Jewish habitation in Israel.

They do indeed say this. Genesis 37-50 plus the first bit of Exodus. Whether it’s true or not is another matter (the archaeological and non-Hebrew documentary evidence is sparse - possibly it’s an origin myth).

Nobody is disputing that the Hebrew people (nb this is the correct term for the period) lived for around a thousand years in the lands we currently know as Israel and Palestine - as you say the archaeological evidence is overwhelming. It’s not even a question.

But my slightly flippant answer to the OP’s question is true. The Hebrew Scriptures are clear that it was in Egypt that a single family became an ethnic people, which subsequently left and moved to Canaan, later known by the Hebrews as the lands of Judea and Samaria.

The whole illegal settlements think is bonkers and a complete distraction from your original post. It’s very simple:

in 1948, the international community approved a Jewish land in what is now Israel, including the West Bank/judea & Samaria (whatever you want to call it) and Gaza. This is according to the law of Uti Possidetis Uris - look it up, very interesting. Same law that gave Ukraine the Crimea - can’t imagine anyone world say Ukraine was occupying that area?!

within moments in 1948, the Arabs invaded and took over those areas (Egypt took Gaza, Jordan took West Bank)

in 1967, the Arabs invaded Israel again, Israel said sod this, we’re taking them back - we were given them legally

nothing illegal about Israel governing those areas. Of course, they chose to withdraw and give Gaza to the Palestinians to rule in 2005 as a gesture of good will - look how that turned out. Not surprising they don’t want to do the same with the West Bank, don’t you think?

anyway, to answer your original question… Jews came from Judea. Our exile, which has lasted thousands of years took us to all corners of the earth, which is why we are come in every colour, shape and size. But rather than assimilating, we kept our unique identity. Pretty cool, huh?!

👏brilliant post. The actual recent history of the region.

Perhaps they would if an Austrian psychopath hadn’t murdered 6 million of them.

I wonder why Austria/Germany isnt held to account for the holocaust? Maybe some reparations are due?

Is this a serious comment? People on the internet are so ignorant. This website is going down the toilet, honestly.

Germany has paid out about 90 billion in US Dollars in reparations for the Holocaust so far and continues to spend about 1.5 billion on it yearly

Lucyslocket · 23/09/2026 22:46

I haven't RTFT because I don't want my brain addled, but as I understand it Abraham, the founder of the Jewish race, came from a place called Ur of the Chaldees which was in modern day Southern Iraq.
Prompted by his father, they left Ur to go to Canaan.
Rather than crossing the dangerous Arabian Desert directly, they followed the Euphrates River northwest for about 600 miles. They stopped and settled in the city of Haran along the way.
At age 75, Abram received a direct command from God in Haran to leave his native land and go to a new land that God would show him.
If you want to read the story for yourself it's in the Christian Bible from Genesis 11.27 to Gen 25.11.
I don't know where you would look for it in Jewish peoples' sacred book.

Hey OP, what other country has to continually explain its existence?
Been on any protests against the Iranian regime, or is it just Jews you don't like?

NancyThompson · 23/09/2026 22:45

Israel is here. It exists. It would be a non-issue, not a global talking point, if it wasn't majority-Jewish. It's being subjected to mass Islamist propaganda, helped on by the far left in Western countries.

I promise if it wasn't Jewish no-one would give a fuck. Like no-one gives a fuck about Sudan.

KidsWhoControl · 23/09/2026 22:45

BlessedIsTheFruit · 23/09/2026 21:34

Well some people just can't help themselves can they?

Not all Jews are Israeli and not all Israelis are Jews.

With reference to Judea & Samaria which a poster took offence to, it was only after Jordan took control and illegally occupied the area in 1948 that it was renamed the 'West Bank'. Literally meaning the west bank of the Jordan river.

Prior to that even the UN referred to the area as the 'hill country of Samaria and Judea', as it was known for thousands of years, in the Partition Plan, so the international community has adopted a name that a country that invaded and illegally occupied for 19 years, renamed it to. Again rather perverse.

Up to 40,000 Jews who lived in the area, including the Jewish Quarter of Old Jerusalem, were driven out, killed or taken prisoner and property destroyed or confiscated.

Yes I believe making the area Jew free (as Palestinian towns and villages are) is perverse and it is Jews who own Jewish businesses in Judea and Samaria so it is Jews who have been targetted.

Sure, the Jewish people came from Judea/Israel. The problem is that the Jewish diaspora happened in AD70 and since then other people have lived there. We don’t normally go round allocating land on the basis of who lived there 2000 years ago, even if they were unfairly pushed out. The people whose ancestors lived in Israel 100 years ago feel that they have been unfairly pushed out. Who has more right to live there now?

The ‘Arch of Titus’, near the Forum in Rome, depicts the forced removal of Jews from their homeland, which gave rise to an involuntary diaspora.

It is quite moving. The Romans didn’t seem to tolerate any resistance or dissent. I suppose it would be called ethnic cleansing today.

Other colonisers came to the area afterwards, of course. The Byzantines were there, or Eastern Roman Empire as it can be called. Then there was quite the significant cultural shift due to the Islamic political and religious expansion by the Muslim Arabs. At the pointy end of a sword. Ottomans took over, for nigh on four hundred years. Then the British Mandate came along.

My father’s cousin was over there in the Palestine bit of Judea and Palestine (British Army) during the First World War.

Talkinpeace · 23/09/2026 22:44

Jesus was a Jew
because Judaism existed in the middle East before Christianity

Mohammed invented Islam around around the year 610

before that there were Jews, Christians, Roman multitheists, Gnostics, and more

The Crusades drove the early Moors / Moslems back to the Middle East (after they took over much of Spain)

Jews were discriminated against and expelled by many countries over many centuries

the fact that there are more Jews in the USA than Europe was not by choice (see also Hitler)

I think it odd that Jews want to live in Palestine, but don't recognise that Palestinians live there. Where do they think Palestinians should live? (The clue is in the name).

There is no such place as Palestine.

I think you're very naive to think that given what's been going on (Ed Sheeran?!), that this thread would not stray into the Gaza arena.

Can guarantee there's the Sheeran bullies posting on the thread.

NancyThompson · 23/09/2026 22:42

The whole argument is stupidly inconsistent anyway. If people who arrived in the UK as adults, and naturalise, are British, then people who were either born in or immigrated to Israel are Israeli.

JustAlice · 23/09/2026 22:41

PurpleThistle7 · 23/09/2026 22:04

My ancestry is almost entirely Ashkenazi jewish as well. All my great grandparents were hunted out of the Jewish ghettos in Russia in the 1880s. Some siblings ended up in Europe and were murdered a generation later, my direct ancestors ended up in the states. Ethically and culturally I’m Jewish but I married out so my kids are 50% ethically Jewish and 75% culturally. My SIL converted so is 0% and 100%. It’s not a simple answer.

i was born in Israel, grew up in the states and immigrated to the UK 20 years ago. Not a simple answer for me either.

I actually don’t care about 2000 years ago. Or 500. Or 1948 particularly. I care about having somewhere to go the next time there’s a round of pogroms though. Am less concerned than many about where this exists physically but the need for a Jewish homeland remains as important as it ever was. We just aren’t safe without it.

Would you be happy if half of your house was declared someone’s safe place/ homeland/ whatever bc their family lived there 30 generations ago and they’d move in tomorrow?
This problem was artificially created by the UN bc USA/UK couldn’t/wouldn’t take in any more immigrants.

This. I mean, my family have lived in the States for over 175 years, and I’d be pretty angry if the Apaches turned up at my parents’ house and said that it was their ancestral land, and they were taking it.

I'm trying to think of appropriate reparations for 6 million lives lost and millions more tortured and abused, to a people who STILL almost 80 years later have never regained the already small population they had before.

And are now having that stain on humanity used as DARVO against them to mock them and demonise them because the country recreated as their homeland, the only place they are free from persecution, wouldn't take another genocide on the chin.

It's sick beyond belief.
