Where do you think Jewish people come from?

Antisemitism is at full volume at the moment and I caveat this post with saying that I have absolutely no wish to make Jewish MNers feel uncomfortable but as an an atheist with no connection to Israel this really makes my blood boil.

I see so many SM posts about the Jews having 'colonized' Israel and Judea & Samaria, not having any claim to the land, not being indigenous and of course being 'Europeans settlers'.

They can't answer where they actually come from though so I thought anyone on here who shares their views might be able to give an answer and how they came to that conclusion.

I understand that Jews are an ethnicity with Judaism as their religion. Being Jewish is not a religion. Jews are still today spread out all over the world with the majority living in Israel and the US.

This has come into focus since the UK Government sanctions on Jewish businesses in Judea & Samaria recently with Jewish communities living there classed as 'illegal settlers'.

It's almost as if Jews and Judea have no connection at all.

So AIBU to ask where the Jews originated from if not from there?

I don't feel this belongs on the CITME board as although the war in Gaza has amplified beliefs, this not directly about that.

Did you not do sex ed at school… same place you came from…

Anyway you’d have to track back and if you go biblical Jesus was Jewish so where did he come from, or go back further to the reason for Passover, slaves being freed and crossing the desert, escaping being slaves in Egypt … that’s if you use religious tracking.

I don’t think the Jewish scriptures say that plus even the koran identifies judea as the land of the jews, it even says god gave them that land.

Theres absolutely shit tons of archaeological evidence of Jewish habitation in Israel.

The archaeology also shows the Canaanite kingdoms that existed prior to the migration of the Jewish peoples to the region. Even the capital city- Jerusalem was originally a Canaanite city called by the Egyptians Rusilamum. It is mentioned often in the Amarna letters when Canaanite kingdoms were client kingdoms under Egypt.

King David conquered the Canaanites and captured Jerusalem around 1000BC for the Israelites who were just then giving up their nomadic lifestyle but we were not yet monotheistic Jews. The shift to worshipping only Yahweh started under King Josiah in the 700s BC.

The Koran was written in the late 600s AD, almost a thousand years after we had conquered Canaan and established the Jewish kingdoms.

My mother’s great grandparents were German immigrants. Does that mean I have the right to return and settle in Germany? Even further back we have some Icelandic ancestry, does that mean I should be permitted to erect a settlement in the centre of Reykjavik? Israel was a colonial project, which isn’t to say that it should cease to exist anymore than Nigeria should cease to exist…but the idea that Israelis have a right to settle any occupied land because they’re Jewish is obviously batshit unless you are claiming Jewish exceptionalism, which is also a colonial mindset.

You mean like in Iran were Jews to this day don't have the same rights as their Muslim neighbours?

It was the same in the Arab world before they forcibly expelled hundreds of thousands of Jews. People who claim there has been peaceful cohabitation for centuries in the middle east often seem to gloss over the facts that while there was peace, it was only because Jews accepted that they were second class citizens. They had no other choice!

Exactly. Read Simon Schama's books and his account of what happened to Jews of Yemen. It's total BS this love and harmony in the Arab world. There were good times ocassionally under tolerant and enlightened rulers. But, as ever, Jews were vulnerable to the foibles and whims of these rulers, just like in Europe.

Sure, the Jewish people came from Judea/Israel. The problem is that the Jewish diaspora happened in AD70 and since then other people have lived there. We don’t normally go round allocating land on the basis of who lived there 2000 years ago, even if they were unfairly pushed out. The people whose ancestors lived in Israel 100 years ago feel that they have been unfairly pushed out. Who has more right to live there now?

They didn't all leave, there has always been a population of Jews in the region.

So if Americans (not native Americans) decide to settle in the UK they should be allowed to because they were originally from here?

Most of them are not 'originally from here'. People went to the USA from all over Europe and beyond, not just the UK. I'm quite sure that the First Nation Americans hoped that the colonisers would give them their land back and bugger off.

But I thought I was clear that I was specifically NOT talking about a two-state solution. I was talking about one country where everyone can live anywhere and everyone has equal rights. Like Jews and Christians living in the UK.

Currently there are more Arabs living in Israel (enjoying an egalitarian society where women and queer people can do whatever they want and full voting rights and representation in the Knesset) than there are Jews living in the entirety of the 52 Muslim countries surrounding them. Israel has certainly done what it can to encourage peaceful coexistence by having it right there. The Muslim countries systematically kicked out their Jewish population over the last 50-100 years. Still not convinced Israel is the problem here.

"We don’t normally go round allocating land on the basis of who lived there 2000 years ago" but what you most certainly did do was constantly somewhere - for the entirety of that 2000 years - persectute, harrass, rape and genocide a vulnerable minority and refuse them refuge when they did try to escape to the point that they HAD NO CHOICE but to go back to their own homeland to get away from you all, a place they had always yearned to go back to and where there had always been a Jewish presence.

If you cared about them you wouldn't be goading people all day every day by calling people who disagree with Israeli logic racist, antisemetic and constantly blocking people's posts who disagree with you.

Long term what you do would be a great way for fascists to make people dislike Jewish people again, using threads to make them look intolerant. This thread has actually reaffirmed my real life understanding that Jewish people aren't all of one mind on this, as you seem to repeatedly insist.

Yes because all Jews are meant to think like you. How many times are immigration threads asked to be taken down? It's OK to want those zapped though. If you cared about peace, you wouldn't be here joining in on making Jews feel like shit. Im not going to be guilt tripped for my views.

There is the problem right there. The people who think that the area was wholly devoid of Jews between AD70 and 1948.

The second diaspora happened later after the 3rd Judean-Roman war otherwise known as the Bar Kokhba Revolt in 132-136 AD. Around half a million Jews were killed by Hadrian’s armies, hundreds if Jewish villages were destroyed abd never rebuilt. Prisoners of war were enslaved while many survivors/refugees fled to Egypt. The practice of Judaism was outlawed.

Many surviving Jews also converted to paganism, then later to Christianity and then again later to Islam over the 1900 years between then and now.

I agree that you cannot claim right to land on the basis of your religion or a tenuous link to a diaspora over a millennium ago.

No-one deliberately murdered children except for Hamas and their camp followers. I'm guessing you don't mean them though, the usual free pass there.

Edited

Not true at all.
Sniper- shot Palestinian children with targeted head and heart aimed bullets are well documented.

There are huge deficiencies with Israel’s prosecution of crimes committed by the IDF, although that is something they share with the armed forces of many countries including the UK.

Yes, this is true. There is no conflict where children have not been killed and injured. And there is no conflict where war crimes have not been committeed, particularly when there is urban warfare with forces intentionally using civilian infrastructure. Then it's a certainty
It shouldn't happen but it does in almost every single war of this type.

My DNA Ancestry test came up 100% Welsh. Does that mean I have the right to kick out any non Welsh people living in Wales?

No. And fortunately thats also not what happened or why there is conflict in Israel/Palestine.

BermudaRhombus · 24/09/2026 10:14

NancyThompson · 24/09/2026 10:03

And note that the IDF opened a criminal investigation, exactly because murdering children is not their policy.

But by that logic everyone should have the right to go back to where they came from, or put another way, the original people of a land have the right to force current residents out.

So, in terms of our own country - all Northern Irish British should, as the IRA say, leave, come back here and hand the place back to the Irish; Australians should leave, come back here and give Australia back to the aboriginals; ditto the Canadians and Americans with British ancestry. Then there are the Scots, the Welsh and so on.

That can be applied to almost every country in the world. I mean, the argument does not really stand up.

MustardGlass · 24/09/2026 10:04

I assume somewhere that is now in the region of Israel/West Bank because that’s where Jesus lived. But honestly I just assumed everywhere because in my mind it was the biggest religion pre Jesus.
probably wrong though.

What do you mean by an “actual” genocide?

‘actual genocide’ surely refers to the horror that people of Jewish faith/ancestry/ethnicity experienced when they were hunted down throughout Europe in the mid 20th century, being removed from their homes, communities and countries, taken to camps where the only purpose was to murder them, all of them, millions of them! Men, women and children taken from Germany, Poland, France, the Netherlands and more, killed because they were Jews. The aim was to totally exterminate them, remove them from the world. That is an ‘actual genocide’.

There are plenty of documented examples of children being targeted by the IDF and people who seek to deny that don’t do their cause any service. People need to be open and honest about the actions of both sides, rather than adopting this stance that their side is entirely innocent and blameless.

Yes, children have been targeted on both sides which is terrible. Even in war, children deserve protection. Yes, Hamas and others also target children but Israel should have higher standards of its soliders. The fact that there is a criminal investiation into the heartbreaking killing of that poor child, Hind Rajab, is a good step in that way at least.

There is no way under a one state solution to prevent Jews becoming a minority, which puts them at risk of being persecuted again (unless you're proposing state-sponsored limitations on family sizes). Not to mention the vast majority of those actually living their (Israelis and Palestinians) don't want this and thankfully external countries no longer have the right to dictate such things.

Jews and Christians have equal rights in the UK but that doesn't mean they have equal experiences. Hence why Jewish schools need security and Christian ones don't.

I also wonder if there is a model of tolerant and democractic coexistance in the Arab world that could be used? Because I can't think of one country which has actually protected its minorities and is a mdel of liberal democracy which uphods women's and LBTQI rights. No Israeli (including Arab Israelis) wants to live in an extension of Syria.

Argue over land as much as you want. It's completely irrelevant. You don't get to murder kids just because they're in your garden.
