If someone put up a post and captioned it “happy birthday to my favourite little sister” this is clearly saying they have a favourite out of their sisters to me? The other two sisters are older than the person posting the post don’t know if that changes the context.

I mean I have 3 siblings, I have a favourite I’m 31 my favourite is my sister who’s 20 months younger than me who is quite literally my bestest friend apart from my closest non relative friend and I don’t care about it I don’t care who knows that she is we just have this bond. On the other hand people do say things like that because quite simply they are the only little/big sister that they have got.

Yes, it's a stupid statement, because either it's true by default, even if you hate her, or you're slighting other sisters. Either way, don't let it bother you, OP.

Jesus Christ. How can this need explaining to you? You're their only little sister. That's the point of the joke! Even Rocky in Project Hail Mary understood that joke, and he was literally an alien with no sense of humor!

There's no need for you to be an arsehole about it. There could be reasons they don't quite get the joke. if English is a second language for example they might be reading it literally and not get the implied meaning.

I think what she actually meant was - to me, this reads and she wasn't actually talking about herself as the sister.

We flew back via Gatwick a couple of weeks ago. There was a woman waiting at arrivals with a huge bouquet of flowers and a sign saying "favourite child". Made me laugh - I did tell her that I loved her sign.

When my GCs ask me "who's your favourite?" I always answer with "You are my favourite Xyear old"

I frequently sign myself off as 'your favourite eldest sister'. It means exactly that. I am their only eldest sister therefore, by default, I am the only eldest sister that can be their favourite. Or least favourite, tallest, shortest, most beautiful, ugliest, etc.

My daughter tells me that I am her favourite Mum. I tell her that she is my favourite daughter in response.

My son has managed not to take offence at any of this happy nonsense (and he is of course my favourite son)

If she is the only little sister of course she is the favourite.

Just like when Fil randomly answers the landline I tell him it’s his favourite daughter in law. Because I’m the only one. I couldn’t say I’m his favourite pain in the ass however 🤣

I’m also my mother’s favourite daughter.

It’s a common joke when someone is the ‘only’ to say they’re your favourite.

‘My favourite granddaughter!’
’I’m your only granddaughter!’

And so on.

Remember 'Bladerunner'? 'Oh, Sebastian - you're our best and only friend.'
