Should I mention my concerns about my sister’s late pregnancy symptoms?

I’m really worried about my sister’s pregnancy. She’s been high risk all along, she’s 45 and she’s got quite a few complications so she is monitored regularly (lots of scans).

She messaged me just now to say that she feels the baby has dropped lower (she’s almost 36 weeks) and that she can now bend over to do her shoelaces up without a problem. She says the baby is moving but stretching more than kicking. She also said she can’t see her belly button anymore but could previously.

I don’t want to worry her unnecessarily but I watched a TikTok video the other day which mentioned one of the signs of a still birth was that she felt able to bend down and put her shoes on without the previous restriction. She could still feel ‘movement’ but it was actually the baby floating around in the water inside her. It could just be that he’s dropped ready for labour. It might be nothing at all.

Would you mention it or not?
Of course I’d feel terrible if something happened but equally I don’t want to seem like I’m making a huge deal out of something that’s nothing.

Has anyone else had these signs late into their pregnancy and it was all fine?

Having lost my babies - stillbirth and my second baby his twin died in the NICU 3 years ago, A check up is always worth it. What alerted me was very reduced movement.

pinkdyno · 23/09/2026 15:51

Any change of movement is worth being checked, regardless of anything else

MadeForThis · 23/09/2026 15:49

Advise her to report the change of movement and go in for a scan.

Mumtotornadoes · 23/09/2026 15:47

No that's perfectly normal. Baby does drop down and you become more able to breath. The types of movements do change as baby turns into optimum position for birth.

I don't know how her ability to see her belly button has changed, I haven't seen mine in months.

However. If in doubt - get checked out. She can ring triage, say she feels like something has changed and they'll pop her on her ctg or do a scan, it's their job, that's what they're there for.

Peonies12 · 23/09/2026 15:33

I'd suggest she rings maternity triage because it's a change. But absolutely do not mention still birth or something you saw on TikTok.

Iris2020 · 23/09/2026 15:30

OP, based on my experience which had a tragic ending I'd ask to drive immediately to the hospital and say "I have asked for baby to be removed via c section and I want that on my file".
If a feeling of movement changes, it's a red flag. My issues happened bang on 36 weeks.

Every pregnancy is different though but I would say there's very little risk to the baby being born at 36 weeks and when you're 45 it's really really not worth pushing until the end of you're even a little concerned.

Sunsara · 23/09/2026 15:29

I wouldn’t mention that to her. I would support your sister to report any changes in movement that are concerning her to her midwife/hospital and I’m sure they would have a very low threshold for checking her over but that is a very non concerning thing to be worrying her about as babies dropping lower in abdomen prior to birth is not uncommon and it sounds like you would be projecting your worries onto her rather than her being worried. I’m sure she’s aware of what is ‘normal’ for her pregnancy.

Muffsies · 23/09/2026 15:29

Perhaps suggest she gets the baby's heartbeat checked to make sure the baby isn't distressed in it's new position. This could just be baby getting really low-down engaged, but i'd be concerned too.

Mouldemort · 23/09/2026 15:28

Is she in regular contact with health professionals?

If it were my sister I definitely would say something it I were worried. Why not?
