AIBU to worry that £1000 a month after bills is not enough?

We have had a sudden drop in income. We didn't have loads to begin with but now we have even less and I'm panicking a bit.

After all bills but without food, we will have very slightly £1000 left. There's just me and DH. Is this doable? I've budgeted to within an inch of my life and cut ALL necessary crap but I'm thinking food/toiletries/household stuff is going to eat away about £150 a week of that at least.

We have no way of earning more for the time being but DH hopes to change jobs in the new year which will hopefully bump up our income by about £150pm.

Tell me I'm being a twat and this is completely possible and we'll still have enough for the occasional nice thing!

If opticians and dental are a concern I think you'll find that a lot of people with less disposable income than you have already cut those....

The problem with MN is that everyone is either a gazillionaire or existing on tuppence a week.

A drop in income is worrying for most people. You won’t be able to be as carefree as you are now, but with some planning I think you will manage. You seem to have a well laid out life and you know what you want/need. It’s good that you are considering the periodic expenses as these are where folks often fall down. Easy to look at monthly payments and think that those are all your bills and loads of people forget that Christmas comes around every December. MSE is a great resource and I hope your health is more manageable with less work.

I don't live on "tuppence ". But I'm poor. That's reality for many people
