To think it cannot be legal to have stray dog services that are only open until 3pm?

Because wtf are you supposed to do when this follows you home from the shop?

The local stray kennel is closed. The dog warden is closed. The police do not deal with stray dogs. Vets do not have space.

OP put some food out for her, which was very kind, but the risk of a strange dog of unknown temperament is too high.

DD is taking her to the vet now. Our council has just told me they've outsourced their dog warden services to a rescue who don't open until 10 am.

Vets can scan their chip though so most owners can be found that way

Poor little dog. Youve done a lovely thing op. DP would be the sort to say just let it go but my view is if it was my dog that got out id like to think a good person would help.

Hope her owner is found ❤️

Local Facebook Lost Pet type groups usually have someone with a chip reader to give you a starting point.

My dog has allergies. The food she ate was Big Dog's low-allergy fish and veg food. She was starving; it was a risk I had to take. She's back here. I am waiting for the dog warden to open. Behaviour-wise, she's lovely and hasn't given me any cause for concern, but I've kept her apart from my dogs.

I honestly thought it was illegal not to have an out of hours dog warden service available.

Take her to the vet to see if she’s chipped, then dog warden.

I have to say, I absolutely would not have a random dog in my house - too dangerous and unpredictable. Too many things can go wrong. Back garden, yes. But absolutely not my house! I probably also wouldn’t feed given you can’t be sure what allergies it might have or any food related behavioural issues that might be triggered.

But then I’ve helped pick up the pieces with too many good Samaritans. No good deed goes unpunished.

There would be a rush of people on FB who would agree to keep for the night until next day. For a start take it to the vet to check if it is tagged.

I mean this poster does have a point op, you're not forced to deal with a random dog, you made the choice to. Not saying you're wrong but it's true

It is a pet animal, not a wild one; besides which she was clawing at the door to be in while we were outside in the garden with it, so she's clearly a pet, not an outdoor dog, and if I went inside and left her, I assume the clawing would escalate to barking and howling.

I think I might have found her a bed for the night. DD has agreed to stay at my mum's with her. Her name is Wanda (the dog, not DD), and we are not keeping her.

So who will pay and staff the 24-hour services if owners took more care there would be no need, none of us has the answer other than try a local emergency vets that does have space

Guess you’ll have to keep her till morning then take her to the nearest vet to read her microchip.
