To ask for help with pain relief for fibroids/endo - I can’t cope anymore

WhatNextImScared · 22/09/2026 22:46

I’m waiting an op to remove a fibroid (44, had an op previously but regrown) but the pain for 4 days during my period is utterly unmanageable.

It’s like being 8cm dilated but with no gas and air and no respite between contractions - and four days in every 23.

Ibuproften, paracetomol and codeine all together don’t make the slightest difference. Naproxen does nothing.

Have just taken my first dose of mefenamic acid prescribed today but I’m not expecting much.

When it’s bad like tonight it’s my whole abdomen that hurts. I can’t urinate or eat or cough without pain. I feel sick now and probably won’t keep the meds down. I’ve got pins and needles/shKes from the nausea waves.

i feel like I’m dying for these 4 days. I have responsibilities I can’t just drop. Tomorrow I have to visit a school (though I won’t be able to if it’s like this in the AM. Nothing at all takes the edge off.

i think I might have endo too - the pain seems to diffuse for it to just be a fibroid.

This all started after I removed my coil in June (massive mistake) and when I have the op to remove the fibroid they will also refit a new one.

But can anyone help me in the meantime? If you have severe Endo pain or anything gynae, is there any painkiller at all that works?

I can’t go on like this. It’s awful. My husband works shifts and I’m often alone with the children and it’s not safe

Tramadol worked for me

holidayhelpneeded1 · 24/09/2026 08:47

Until then have you tried a TENS machine? Ive tried cheap and expensive ones and honestly my cheap one works well, it doesnt fully fix it but I feel like it distracts. Also have you tried heat or cold? One of these again may help

Night 3 without much sleep here. I’m going to break and pay for the private Ryquo prescription that I can’t afford I think.

Can you ask to see a different doctor? Tell them you arent sleeping, you pain is not tolerable and you need help. They cant just refuse to help you. I would also be putting in a complaint if they dont help and I would be asking them to put a note on your medical file explaining why they are refusing to help you with pain that is affecting your life when you have told them that the pain medication given isnt helping. Its their job to find a way to help and if they cant do that they need to refer you to someone that can.

Thank you to everyone for sharing. It looks like it’s a different combo which works best for everyone. But definitely I will push for something stronger.

Not stronger than naproxen though! Diclofenac isn’t as effective as naproxen which the op has already said doesn’t help

For me its been the opposite, diclofenac suppositories help far more than naproxen

Weed. Not joking, it's the best thing for it.

I have a prescription and honestly it does nothing for my endometriosis pain, its useful for muscle pain for me.

OP I have found that any single med doesnt help but using multiple in combination is helpful. What works best for me is diclofenac suppositories, dihydrocodiene and then using heat pads and tens machine. That combination helps on my worst days.

My hysterectomy recovery was ok . Main thing is not lifting anything and hoovering .

you can get a cleaner in , maybe cook or ready meals in prep and if children are bigger it’s possible.

I walked every day afterwards building up from a couple of hundred metres to 20 min walk within about a week . So if you can find someone for the school run for the first week you may find it’s no worse than how you cope for a few days every month .

this is very reassuring, thank you for posting

Oh was going to add that I sometimes take buscopan or something antispasmodic when flaring as I find that helps.

Thank you, yes i am taking it and it is helping a bit I think.

I had to go private, the 14cm fibroid inside my uterus, put pressure onto everything - bowel, bladder, nerves, twitching legs and nothing worked! Severe anaemia, lack of sleep, pain killers useless as were the other prescribed medications. Hysterectomy was the only option, but within a month after the op my life was back. Don't be fobbed off, the pressure is the issue and it can lead to long term damage, so go shout and make it clear it is not something you can live with.

My fibroid is only 3cm so it’s mad it’s causing all this pain but hopefully will be gone before Xmas. I’m definitely getting a Mirena put in. It was annoying spotting all the time but that was far far better than this nightmare

Definitely look into medical cannabis. Someone in my family used it and it was life-changing. I know someone else who had terrible pain due to MS cramping and it’s helped enormously.

Out of interest, is your GP male? You could also ask to see a different doctor within the same surgery. It can be very difficult to get support for gynea problems!

Bubstar · 23/09/2026 18:50

I have fibroids and used to roll around in pain for 3-4 days a month. The only thing that helped was hot water bottles on my back and tummy.

Perhaps you need to tell the medics that your DH is most unhappy that you are out of action looking after the DC, doing housework and unable to have sex every month for a week. Funnily enough that seems to make them take notice more 🤬

For me diet to reduce inflammation actually helps a great deal. Wheat is the biggest one to avoid but avoiding sugar, and FODMAPs helps. I also avoid dairy for other reasons but some people say it really helps their pain.

I take magnesium and you can apply to abdomen. Pill or mini pill helps me.

Heat.

I use the breathing from childbirth.

Specialist Osteo and Chinese dr/acupuncture.

Would Amatryptaline and or Pregablin work? Lidocaine patches? If so i have some spares you can have, but can any medical professionals on here clarify please?

Fucks me right off how women are expected to just suffer in silence.

I’m not sure but will ask. The GP not bothered so think I need to talk directly to the gyn. When I can leave the house again 😵‍💫

I agree. I read somewhere that someone’s bf got loads of hardcore pain relief to take home after a vasectomy and they were sent home from a c section with instructions to take paracetamol. It’s bullshit.

Spoke too soon about the worst being over. Just went for a poo which was agony and it’s set off another wave of misery 😫

Temgesic sublingual if it’s still available was what I used to take before I had hysterectomy

BronzedSun · 23/09/2026 17:24

I get agonising endo pain. Diclofenac on its own doesn’t really work that well for me if i take it a couple of hours taking paracetamol and ibuprofen combined, it works wonders.

Saltnchilli · 23/09/2026 14:38

What did the GP offer you instead?

Just more instructions on how to dose menafemic acid properly and how to run it alongside paracetomol and Buscopan

i hope you got some rest last night! Honestly, you're 44 and this is a recurring issue. Even without the pain you've had excessive flooding and your fibroids grew back. I would seriously raise the hysterectomy question before your next surgery or in a couple of years time you could be back in this position and at the bottom of a waiting list again.

ps: my gynae is private (through DH workplace insurance) so not a long waiting list if needed

That’s ridiculous. I had to really push for morphine
if it is unbearable, go to a&e and explain you aren’t coping with the pain

The worst has passed for this month but this is 💯my plan for next month if needed.
