To think hotel designers should at least have once slept in a room before being allowed to design a room.

I travel a lot for work and for pleasure.

I know I'm a particular sort of person buy Yegods some of the room I've stayed in at complete abs utter shite designed by people who I don't think have ever slept I. A room ever on their whole life ever, not once.

A bathroom light that comes on by sensor as you open the door. Nay, not A bathroom light, four lights. 3am snoozy wee completely brightened like the sun. No chance of just meandering back in my slightly soporific stupor.

And more poor DH who didn't even need to be awake now has frazzled corneas.

Light switches that you can't reach from prone in bed. What the warrant feck.

A kettle that yiu can't boil at the same time as watching tv because of the situation of sockets.

A 12foot by 8 foot plate glass window opposite my bed looking out into a communal outdoor space. Felt like investing in a red bulb for that hotel.

Lights choice? 13 spotlights and 2 side lights. Or nothing. No in between.

A very very stylish en suite in an historic building which was just a stone wall 2/3 of the height of the room. No ceiling to it. All ablution noise audible throughout the room. Married 35 years but, nope I'd rather not hear That tyfvfm.

A door that only locks from a single key from outside the room. So if one of use goes out for a bit, the other has to remain locked in. Or unlocked, compromising safety.

No handheld shower, and no shower cap provided. Nope I don't want my hair washed every time I shower thank you.

Had held showers with no parking location so it's a one handed shower for me, generally resulting in a soaked bathroom ffffs.

No socket near the bed.

No food on a Sunday evening.

No physical chain or bolt in the inside of the door.

A chair in the route from my side of the bed to the en suite. I'm sure I've broken toes in this scenario.

Every hotel employee should be forced to spend a nice in each room to check for smooth sailing.

I feel your pain. Just spent a few days at somewhere that I lived in when working in a particular European city.
New ownership, they probably spent millions.
Managed to get my "old" room. Oh dear.
Let us just say that the refurb was so anti women I had to write it in my review.
Three times more than when I last stayed for 50% fewer ameneties, but the city seems to have gone over to the middle eastern market.

Shower control under neath shower furthest from you so you get soaked working out where hot is!

Shower controls designed by nasa with zero instructions.

No plugs by mirrors, no noise reduction so you can hear your neighbours, showers where it’s either a massive overhead or a handheld one put at a height where should you try to use it whilst it’s in its holder you just get a continuous face full of water. Also showers where being able to raise it higher is restricted. Luggage space not made for an actual suitcase just a half arsed attempt to make it look like they have. Cushions on the bed along with a runner. They never get washed please stop doing this. Hard beds, Hilton looking at you, we don’t all like to sleep on concrete. So many really nice hotels fall short. When I stop doing my job I will never stay in another hotel again.

FucksakeLavender · 22/09/2026 22:03

And the one that I think every hotel designer is an abject fool for:

Beds that can be seen from the corridor when the door is opened.

I like I little naked lie in on the morning and DH goes for a run. weirdo

Chances are I'm starfished ungainly as he has to time his entrance to and exit from the room so that there's no hoi polloi in the vicinity so catch a glance of my sumptuous heft as he egresses or ingresses.

I stayed in one recently in London for work - new aparthotel, very central, catered to business travellers - the bathroom lights were arranged so that they highlighted the back of your head as you looked in the mirror, and the microwave oven was so high that I couldn't reach up high enough to pop anything into it. I suspect a rather tall man designed the place and had never had to put on make-up. The only other mirror had no plugs near it. It was genuinely quite stressful.

FucksakeLavender · 22/09/2026 21:59

A bedside table that is 24inches square with a completely and utterly plug in phone that is 23 inches square.

No sockets by the bed is the most annoying thing!

It's a bit weird not to wash your hair every time you shower though. If you don't, you should take your own shower cap.

It's not weird at all

MathiasBroucek · 22/09/2026 21:58

Amen to all the above. You are my tribe!

Especially no bathroom shelving and automatic bright lights. I once had the latter in Spain that came on even when you turned over in bed. You couldn't turn them off yourself but thankfully a maintenance guy removed the fuse or something...

I once stayed at a VERY expensive hotel in Boston (client paying) that had been designed by a genius. Nothing dramatic but everything was just so thoughtful. It was the first time I ever saw the flat surface above the loo roll for your phone!

FucksakeLavender · 22/09/2026 21:58

Mirrors too high for the average woman person.

I like to pop my lippy on without giraffe gurning.

Agree with all the above can I add- hopeless hotel hairdryers!
also recently stayed in hotels where only provided with one bottle of combined expensive hair and body wash- clearly organised by a man as every woman knows separate shampoo is a must

JustAnotherWhinger · 22/09/2026 21:56

No sockets by the bed is the worst one.

No glass or tumbler in the bathroom.
Stupidly small towels.
Curtains that don’t close properly.
Windows that don’t open at all.

FucksakeLavender · 22/09/2026 21:56

Manalive I lurve you all.

Honestly I'm in hotels probably a third of the year and I'm a nob so I take these and and use them with some unsavoury gleeful abundance.

I read the thread title and my immediate thought was : glass bathroom walls. I stayed in one with a delicious fuck buddy and literally clamped up for 48 hours.
The weirdo who thinks it's weird not to wash their hair every day is clearly not blessed with a fabulous mane, those of us who do, know better.

It's not weird at all; in fact washing it every day is a bit weird, unless you have some unfortunate medical condition.

MrsBatshitRatshit · 22/09/2026 21:54

If there is a minibar, proper drinking glasses should be provided. Nobody wants to drink the world's most expensive alcohol out of a plastic cup.

I don’t think I know anyone who washed their hair everyday. It’s really not at all weird to shower and not wash your hair.

Why is it weird? Hair doesn’t need washing daily

Foxybyname · 22/09/2026 21:50

Agree with most of your list, and adding:

Socket next to a mirror
Hand held shower , and no it's not weird as a PP has said to not wash your hair every time you shower!

MrsPapillon · 22/09/2026 21:49

Oh and the shampoo/body wash dispensers are always right up the wall which is great if you’re having a shower but infuriating if you’re having a bath and have to keep standing up to retrieve every pump of body wash.

Out of interest, how old are you and how long is your hair? As I’ve aged my hair/scalp isn’t at all greasy. I wash it at most once a week. If I wash it more then it gets totally fluffy and staticky.

It takes my hair hours to naturally dry and about 20 mins min to blow dry I don’t have time for that! Also it’s really bad for your Hair to wash it every day!

What?? No it isn’t 😆

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 22/09/2026 21:46

Sorry but frazzled corneas made me snort laughing...

Lifesyoungdream · 22/09/2026 21:46

No shelves in the bathroom to put your toiletries.Mirrors miles away from sockets if you want to blow dry your hair. Only one socket in a room behind a wardrobe.I could go on but I’m actually in a hotel room that’s not so bad.😀
