How do you deal with this?

I don't actually think I've met anyone like that.

The wealthy bastards I know tend to plead poverty, if they mention money at all.

OldScribbler · 23/09/2026 18:18

“It’s your round” is the appropriate phrase.

Saz12 · 23/09/2026 10:24

Just say "count me out of rounds, I'll do my own thing". And say at the outset that you want to split bills according to what you had.

I had a friend-of-a-friend like this, she always claimed she earned less than everyone else, was veggie so her meal was cheaper, she'd had soft drinks (eg 3 mocktails rather than a glass of wine)...or whatever. When out with her, the second she started up, I totted up her bill seperately and she paid her part - the rest usually split evenly between everyone else. Obviously, her total often came to more than a share would have.

You socialise with someone you think is thick and who is definitely tight? Why?

This!

If it’s someone you work with then just go to the bar and buy your own drink. It really isn’t difficult to do this-just don’t ask them what they want.

MyManinCaracas · 23/09/2026 09:43

Whoops, I don’t have a bank card with me; can you get this?

How do you deal with this?

Using my words and never buying them a drink.

Doubleknow · 23/09/2026 09:32

I don't have friends like that. The only person I know who brags about his wealth, also flashes it about by buying big rounds.

I have aquaintances who aren't quick to buy their round, but in a round situation it's easy to say "who's round is it? Keith it must be yours."

I have one friend who is reluctant to buy rounds becuase he doesn't drink as much as everyone else. He's happier to just buy his own, but the big drinkers sometimes insist on buying him one. I don't think it's reasonable for them to be annoyed he doesn't buy one back.

HowardsWahey · 23/09/2026 09:26

CurdinHenry · 22/09/2026 20:40

I think she's incredibly stupid (if I told you her job you'd be horrified) and probably totally devoid of empathy so I actually don't think she does know. Which makes me feel a bit bad but again she has an absurdly serious job for a thickie and I'm not her keeper so shrug overall.

So she's not only tight, she's also thick, obnoxious and devoid of empathy? What do you like about her? What IS there to like about her?

Cut the cord!

TY78910 · 23/09/2026 07:48

Tongue in cheek but they preserve their wrath somehow 😂

On a serious note are they actually wealthy? A lot of people say things to make themselves look like they’re in a better situation than they actually are. Not to say they shouldn’t pay their way though if they’ve agreed to go out socially.

DarlingCoffee · 23/09/2026 07:41

I hate people like this, and she does know what she’s doing. Just buy your own drinks. Make it awkward. If you don’t she will just keep on taking advantage of you.

PruLeithsNecklace · 23/09/2026 07:40

“I’m just going to get my own drinks tonight, I’m not doing rounds any more.”

Onefairfish · 23/09/2026 07:38

MyGallbladderIsAFucker · 23/09/2026 07:25

I buy rounds with my friends but our drinks tends to be midday coffee whilst the kids are at school and within perhaps a £1/2 of each other I couldn't be friends with people who don't take their turns. I do have a friend whose on mat leave benefit who I tend to try and pay each time with because I love her and her company

ladyjaynes · 23/09/2026 07:10

You obviously seriously dislike this woman, calling her thick! Just don’t go out with her and tell the mutual
why

AmnesiacsDream · 23/09/2026 06:54

Never had friends do it. Have been in a couple of situations where a friend of a friend or a colleague has been like it. I'm very blunt to the point of being rude and point it out clearly. "You've forgotten your purse again? How oddly convenient for you that it's always on days you need to pay your half. Not to worry, you can just transfer X on your phone."

Cartouche · 23/09/2026 06:46

CurdinHenry · 22/09/2026 20:45

There are loads of situations in which it would be awkward not to do so

So you’ve chosen the discomfort of letting yourself be exploited over the discomfort of saying ‘Your round, Susan. Mine’s a G and T.’

Your choice. No one has you at gunpoint.

110APiccadilly · 23/09/2026 06:40

Presumably this sort of behaviour partly explains the wealth? Stupid to boast about it though, and rude not to get a round in.

There's one exception, which is if the pub going is basically expected of her. I've been to colleagues' leaving drinks when really skint, and was fortunate that I am a known teetotaler and have very fair minded colleagues so was left out of rounds. In that case, I have more sympathy for her, though it's still rude and it's still stupid to boast about the wealth.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 23/09/2026 06:31

Fool me once - shame on you.
Fool me twice - shame on me.

I wouldn’t stand for it.

A friend of mine bought a round of drinks and it cost her £90.
When her colleagues were buying their own drinks, they bought lager, but when someone else was picking up the tab, it was brandy, and cocktails.

I would have refused to pay for it. I won’t let anyone take the piss out of me.

HambleTheDoll · 22/09/2026 23:01

I got the last one. I’ll have a babycham please.

Mouldemort · 22/09/2026 22:59

Are we doing rounds? Yes? Susan - you’re up!

NotAnotherScarf · 22/09/2026 22:48

CurdinHenry · 22/09/2026 20:35

I think the second but I think she doesn't have a clue how obnoxious it is which bothers me

She does. She thinks she's getting the better of you or is just too tight to put her hand in her pocket.

You sit there with an empty glass. And wait. You shut down conversation to yes no answers, you don't start conversation. If she goes and buys just herself a drink. You say nothing and just buy yours. You do not by her a drink again ever...you've split the round

With food you just as the waiter to split the bill when you or even see asks for it.

TheBers · 22/09/2026 22:19

Well we had a friend who made out we were all in a similar (financial) boat.
We shared a sense of humour, the blokes we dated and similar sized houses. We all worked in similar jobs so we were undeprepared for the grifter amongst us.

Honestly it's hard when your friend is lovely and you realise that she's booked a restaurant special deal ( hey we're all broke right) but then ordered stupidly expensive cocktails, or found cheap flights and hotel but then no expenses spared on joint things like taxis and restaurant meals when its awkward to bring it up ( hey we're only away three days right).

I did bring it up and she was fine about doing her share of driving, paying the difference in her drinks and splitting things more evenly. But then she got a massive inheritance ( (parents still alive) and got herself all new friends anyway. 😁

Lararoft · 22/09/2026 21:58

It’s always the richer people who are tricky with money like this I’ve found!!

So I always make sure I only pay for my own drinks & food, although if I’m going for a meal with other people I’m the one who usually ends up paying the service charge / tips even though I’m always on the lowest wage, as literally everyone I know is too tight to step up for that & it gets embarrassing..

Going forward I would definitely insist before going out that you will all go to the bar & pay separately; it’s a pain but it’s the only way!!

I only buy coffees / drinks for really really close friends who I know will return the favour.

CurdinHenry · 22/09/2026 20:20

How do you deal with this?

"New rule Julie, we're all buying our own drinks from now on. I'm pulling in the purse strings and saving for Christmas, so I'll get my own drinks and you can get your own......."

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 22/09/2026 21:25

i just can’t imagine how everyone continues to buy Susan drinks when she’s not getting a round in. I’d buy my round and then quite happily sit there with an empty glass until she either got up and paid her way or time was called and we all went home! But fuck enabling her.

But I guess if she’s worked out that no one’s brave enough to call her out on her behaviour and she’s not embarrassed to carry on drinking for free, then fair play to her! If you don’t like it, don’t enable it 🤷🏻‍♀️
