To think this is a perfectly reasonable amount of legos?

Hi!

For context, I was told a few years ago that my kids didn’t have enough toys, so I went ahead and bought them more.

I thought the amount of toys they’ve had since then was perfectly reasonable, until a few days ago when I complained to my friend that my eldest doesn’t really play with toys. He is autistic and not into imaginative play. He used to be very into trains, but not anymore, so now he mostly just listens to his Toniebox and Yoto.

She said it was because they barely have any toys. She then pointed to the box of Lego Duplo they have and said they couldn’t really build much or do much imaginative play with it.
I was quite surprised. I admit it made me feel bad, but is it really not enough? Should I get them more toys for Christmas?
My kids don’t really understand the concept of Santa or asking for presents, so I can’t ask them what they would like.

My kids are 4, 2, and 2 months old. My eldest also has regular-sized Lego.

I wouldn't rush to Lego, they can play with Duplo for ages and it's less of a choke hazard for the younger two.

I would get a big base plate so they can build houses/castles/towns etc, some more mixed bricks and some people. Maybe some flowers and trees too.

Do you build with them?

The magnetic blocks (they look like Minecraft cubes) are really good, ours are used multiple times a week and I’ve used them with kids I volunteer with and they’ve been a huge hit. You do need a lot of these things, same with Magnatiles, to make really cool stuff. My two like to make big sprawling castles and things.

What? I think it's plenty. I do have a tip for duplo though. They play with it much more if you get some of the flat thin base tiles to build onto. Same with lego really, for imaginative play rather than following instructions, anyway.

Hundreds of kids don't play with Lego properly any more anyway...they follow instructions and that it. No inventing. Just following printed instructions.

I think this is a chicken/egg thing though TBF. Most of the Lego stuff now is sets to build rather than boxes with a decent selection of bricks to free build. Lots of quite fiddly bits and if you go wrong it just doesn't work.

My son is 6 and he sort of does a mix - he loves the mini figures and will build say, the ship from the instructions, but then loves building his own "bases" and mixing everything up for his games. But we had to get him a bundle of bricks of marketplace for that bit!

@Muntoru I agree if your eldest doesn't enjoy the imaginative elements of play, building from the instructions and displaying them might be a bit more of a hit?

Thank you, my eldest has two of those large yellow boxes (one classic set and one with lego friends) + the rc cargo train set as well as two small sets (Mickey mouse campervan + firefighter set).
TBH I struggle with gauging how much is enough and when they need more.

I realize now with the answers above that the reason they don’t touch their Magnatiles is because they have so little.

If that's all the toys that's a tiny amount and I say that as someone who was pretty restrained about toy buying

Doesn’t look like a lot to me tbh, I’d get more. Mine had moved on from Duplo by 4 and were playing with normal Lego.

It's not much but ok if it's one of many things they have to play with. What's the rest of their toy collection like?

Well possibly but why just Lego? What other toys has he got? Do you read to him? What about colouring books and sticker books? What about “doing” toys like experiments? Galt produce fun ones. Does he have a railway set? What about Playmobile? Mine liked letter jigsaw puzzles and toys for manual dexterity like play doh.

It’s not many for three children to share, it’s fine for a two year old on their own but between three is a bit stingy if I’m honest. Doubt your two month old is joining in though, I wouldn’t buy any more I’d buy normal Lego for your four year old now.
