Of course they were. In November 2022, the Tory government started sovereignty negotiations with Mauritius, but stopped them a year later, after a paper by three academics said transferring the islands would be a "major self-inflected blow". And yet...

I’m surprised that anyone who has read about this shameful episode in the UK’s history would not be bothered by it.

I’m FB friends with a Chagossian who lives in Sussex (there’s a small community of Chagossians there). I wrote to our MP about 15 years ago, who told me then that there hadn’t been a change of policy towards the Chagossians, but there had been a change of attitude. We want to keep the base. The land is not ours. We can continue to keep it if we pay. Otherwise it goes to international court and we either pay more, lose the base, or behave like Putin in the Crimea. The Telegraph/Farage/Trump stuff is just a toddler having a tantrum because the decision is difficult: I don't want to go to bed AND I want to stop feeling tired.
