TW: abortion, would you complain?

Hello all

Regular user, name changed.

This is going to be long so if you reach the end, thank you so much.

I have children already, still being treated for PPD 13 months on from my youngest being born. Contraception failed, found out I was pregnant. Due to mental health, lack of space in our home and finances, we made the difficult decision to abort.

I booked in for a surgical abortion due to personally not wanting to take the tablets and see/experience what comes away whilst awake. I travelled almost 2 hours to the clinic. Now some of you may have read about my experience there. I’ll make it a shorter version for new readers: I was given a tablet under my tongue to encourage cervix to dilate. Around 3 hours later I suddenly realised that I’d felt a huge gush of blood, I’d leaked through a maternity pad, my trousers, the seat and onto the floor in the waiting room which was also full of men waiting for vasectomies, I then was rushed into a side room and rescanned and pregnancy was still there, I was stood half naked whilst they tried to mop up blood etc then a sheet was wrapped around me and I had to walk back through the waiting room to the operating room.

Now bear in mind, this was an ultrasound guided surgical abortion.

I’m in a bit of a dazed/sad/traumatised state so forgive me for getting timelines potentially wrong but I spent the next few days bleeding very heavily and passing clots. I went to A&E after feeling really unwell all day and passing a clot the size of a kiwi. I was scanned and my womb was filled with blood. They let me go home after some monitoring and said a dr didn’t have time to see me and I’d probably bleed out the rest.

Long story short, I ended up back in hospital again due to losing lots of blood and clots. They admitted me and I was scanned. Now they could see a large amount of tissue, blood, free fluid leaking into my pelvic area and clots.

After 2 nights in hospital on oramorph for the pain, I had an ERPC. Whilst in the operating theatre, it should have took 10-20 minutes and I was in there for 1.5 hours. They had left parts of the baby still inside of me, tissue was embedded into my womb lining and once they had done an ultrasound guided suction, they called another one/gynae surgeon in to scrub in and help do a D&C instead, cutting away at my womb lining to remove the tissue. I bled heavily and had to have manual compression on my stomach to stem the bleeding which has resulted in quite extensive bruising.

Luckily, I did not need a blood transfusion. I am now out of hospital with 7 days of blood thinning injections and 10 days of antibiotics.

I am deeply traumatised. The surgeon said they would have had to be blind to miss what they removed from my womb. My only comfort now is that I signed for babies remains to be cremated and spread at our local crematorium woods which had a “garden of angels” for babies and where my previous miscarriages were scattered too, so I have somewhere I can go and take some flowers and try and dull some of my grief.

I was feeling sad and guilty anyway but was also very strong in my belief that my children here matter the most in this situation and I need to address my MH/OCD etc before we even considered having anymore (we were settled with 2 and DH booked in for vasectomy next week).

Do I complain to the abortion clinic? One part of me wants to make sure the chances of this happening to another woman are slim, the other part of me wants to just move on but I am plagued by nightmares, horrible nightmare of me giving birth to babies with no limbs and midwives screaming that it’s my fault and other dreams along those lines. I wake up in a cold sweat and have been given sleeping tablets to try and get some proper rest.

What would you do?

YANBU - complain
YABU - do not complain

I am so, so sorry for what you have been through. You should absolutely complain to the clinic if you feel that will help you. Do what is right for you. You are the one that matters here.

Mindgame · 23/09/2026 00:25

I’m so sorry that you had this horrendous experience. I’ve heard/read several similar stories. You’re not alone but I get the impression that abortion providers don’t always provide the best care and naturally many people don’t want to pursue a complaint.

Having said that, please take time to heal before you do anything. And then when you have the strength, think about complaining. It’s unacceptable that you’ve been put through this and the clinic needs to be called to account.

LadyInRainbow · 23/09/2026 00:08

Sorry clicked the wrong option you should definitely complain.

Fedupmumofadultsons · 23/09/2026 00:02

Oh you poor love complain and better complain that as an atrious way to treat anyone especially in such difficult circumstances. But you are totally correct your children here and your mental health had to come first x

EmailsaysOOO · 22/09/2026 23:45

Sorry to read what happened to you. At some point in the future you could consider filling a complaint but , if it were me, I would concentrate on resting and getting your body over what you've been through. Be kind to yourself, take the time to grieve, and then try and move on. Your family will need you to get over it. I doubt there is a time limit on the complaint. just how I think I would deal with it. best wishes.

feministmom4ever · 22/09/2026 23:39

I would definitely complain, it sounds like a botched job. I would also want the details of what caused it to go so horribly wrong (but that might just be me). I would wait until you’ve had some time to process and reflect though.

Mumofoneandone · 22/09/2026 22:02

What a truly horrendous experience. Glad you are getting some counselling.
Absolutely complain when you feel strong enough to. At the moment, just take it a day at a time.
You will get through this. Sending you hugs

abathofmilkwithladydi · 22/09/2026 21:12

I had a termination when I was 20, in a terrible relationship and without a penny to my
name.

The sonographer told me the “baby” was 13 weeks (I’d waited 4 weeks for a referral) a girl (I don’t know if they actually knew that) and that “she” had a very strong heartbeat.

post op, 2 of the 3 healthcare workers on the recovery ward where I came round were hugely pregnant and discussing baby names. Really unnecessary.

That’s always stuck with me. It was hugely cruel, not just inappropriate. @opI’m so sorry all of this happened to you; please do complain. I wish I had back then.

monymonymony · 22/09/2026 21:04

Someone should have explained to you that you wouldn’t have seen anything with the tablets, whereas needing a second intervention after opting for a surgical abortion is quite common.

I had a surgical abortion when I was very young, as tablets weren’t available back then. They accidentally left some remains behind, which led to septic shock, and I almost died. More recently, I opted for an abortion for reasons very similar to yours and chose the tablets. It was a breeze, and I didn’t see anything.

Personally, I would never choose a surgical intervention when the medical option is available. In my experience, it is a dangerous and barbaric procedure that should be avoided whenever possible.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 22/09/2026 20:55

I don’t understand why the sonographer said what he did. Surely that’s inappropriate.

I believe you can get a debrief type appointment where someone talks through your notes with you to help you understand what happened and why. That may help you process what happened.

I’m so sorry- that was an appalling experience and should never have happened.

Superbok · 22/09/2026 20:51

I'd concentrate on recovering and complain later. I'm surprised you had all that to contend with at 8 weeks, not my experience at all, no tablets or anything like that with a surgical abortion and it was no worse than a smear test. It sounds like you've had a really hard time of it.

Merryoldgoat · 22/09/2026 20:45

You needed healthcare and were failed woefully. I’m so sorry and hope you start to recover soon.

I would make a complaint in the fullness of time.

NinaGeiger · 22/09/2026 20:38

So sorry you've been through this. It sounds horrendous. Even if everything went perfectly this situation would be very traumatic and difficult, without all the complications and poor treatment.

I would complain unless you think getting an unhelpful response would prolong the agony for you.

I remember your other thread and had wondered how you were doing. Sending all the positive vibes possible

Goodgriefisthatrue · 22/09/2026 19:54

I have just supported my DD to make a complaint against a known termination provider- who didn’t scan her properly, told her the baby wasn’t viable and so many other things. She had a reaction to the tablets in the mouth (waiting for a surgical procedure under anaesthetic) and collapsed in the toilet - it was horrendous. She waited 6 months to make the complaint- she had support etc first so she could figure out what she wanted to do about the experience. Be kind to yourself- focus on you and then make your decision. Take care xxx

Sereine · 22/09/2026 17:49

You need to talk through carefully what happened and why. I'm wondering whether you perhaps had that extreme reaction to the medication because the pregnancy was not viable anyway?

I thought the same but whilst scanning me to check if the pregnancy had already come away, the sonographer let me know that baby was measuring 8 weeks and had a strong heartbeat which made me sob. I should have walked away then. Part of me will always regret that I didn’t walk out of that clinic and all I keep saying is I’m sorry over and over when I wake from yet another nightmare hoping that maybe somewhere they can hear me. I’m absolutely traumatised and wish we had of been in a position to keep the pregnancy despite not planning to ever have a third.

Thank you everyone. DH super supportive and is a brill dad and Husband. I’ve been able to rest lots, not worry about housework or getting older DC to preschool. Helps that he’s self employed. I will concentrate on therapy for a while and see how I feel in a month or 2.

I am so sorry tryingtoforgivemyself.
That made me cry and I can't imagine going through it. It does sound really traumatic.
I would want to complain but at the same time not want to re live it.

ForRedPoet · 22/09/2026 18:02

A complaint can wait. Concentrate on yourself at the moment.
Is your partner supportive with this and the kids?

Catza · 22/09/2026 17:55

You have loads of time to make a complaint so I wouldn't rush into anything right this moment. Your priority should be addressing your trauma and I am glad to hear you are starting therapy. Once the dust have settled, you can consider whether a complaint is the right step for you or if this is going to re-traumatise you further.

Floppyearedlab · 22/09/2026 17:49

This is a horrible story, but complaining and most lily getting no reply or a completely unsatisfactory one is not going to help you at all. Please take care of yourself and in time seek some counselling.

Sereine · 22/09/2026 17:49

IHaveAFeelingWeAreNotInKansasAnymore · 22/09/2026 17:20

At the moment I would make some detailed notes about what happened, and then give yourself a few weeks before you decide if you can cope with making a complaint.

You're absolutely within your rights to, and I am so sorry you had that experience, but the most important thing now is your mental health and what you need to do to get you through for now.

You dont have to complain right away (or at all) if you dont feel ready yet.

tryingtoforgivemyself · 22/09/2026 17:19

Thank you @TheAmazingShrinkingWomanI start counselling tomorrow, I’ve gone private as I don’t trust anything to do with the abortion clinic now.
