Aibu to feel hurt by dh asking to go away so soon after my DM died

My dm died last Thursday night, she had been in hospital for four weeks with a cancer related complication, which she recovered from but suddenly deteriorated from an infection.
It felt sudden and unexpected.

Meanwhile, my DH has been planning a two night trip for an outdoor hobby for weeks, weather dependent.

He asked me last night if it would be ok to go this Friday and Saturday night as the weather looked good for it.
He did say that if I didn't want him to he would understand.

In the moment I was shocked he was asking me and it felt like I was going to be unreasonable to say no, because obviously he must have thought it was reasonable, why else would he even be asking??
So at first I said I'd be fine. But I wasn't really, which I told him later and he is now staying.

But now I feel bad he's not going and also annoyed that he even asked and put it on me.

For context with my mother:
When I was younger I had a complicated and difficult relationship with her, I moved away from my home country to the UK over 25 years ago.

I last visited my dm 18 months ago, but subsequently became disabled and unable to fly so wasn't able to visit her recently.

We've had periods of low contact due to her actions and I've said for years that if I lived nearby we would have been estranged years ago.

However in the last few years since her cancer diagnosis we've been the closest we've probably ever been, phone calls 2-3 times a week or more.

So my DH knows it's not a straightforward close relationship eg like I have with my own dd, but she was still my mum, I loved her, miss her and am grieving.

Aibu for being annoyed he even asked? Aibu for telling him I didn't want him to go so soon?

Also how can I stop feeling annoyed and responsible for him not going at the same time.

I'm sorry for your loss. But, I don't think your DH has done anything wrong by asking. He doesn't have a crystal ball - he asked so he knew what you wanted. You wanted him to stay at home, and he has done so. Unless there's a backstory with your DH he hasn't done anything wronmg here.

He shouldn’t even be asking you, he should’ve cancelled so he can be there to support you.

The hobby will always be there and he could’ve cancelled and arranged to go another time. You need him right now for emotional support.

@ForTooLongwhat difference does that make? She needs looking after!

Not everyone wants "looking after", though.

When MIL died two years ago, DH just wanted to carry on as normal - as soon as he heard the news he took the dog for a walk! He went back to work the following day and only had a day off for the funeral. He didn't want to talk about it (and still doesn't, except a quick mention on the anniversary).

You yourself said you had a difficult and estranged relationship with your mother - why do you expect your dh to care more for her than you did? From what he saw from your relationship, his lack of concern is normal.

Depends on the person. When DH lost his mum the last thing he wanted was me fussing over him and “looking after” him. I went away for a night a couple of weeks after. When he lost his dad he wanted to be with family (me, DC, his sibling and family) but again didn’t want to be looked after.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable of you to not want him to go. But I don’t think you should be angry at him for asking. It wasn’t unreasonable of him to ask.

I'm so sorry for your loss, OP. I lost a parent suddenly quite recently, it's difficult.

Perhaps your partner was just trying to gauge what you needed?

I think a mixture of emotions is normal when grieving. Nothing you feel is wrong, it's just where you're at right now.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 22/09/2026 14:57

I've voted YANBU as it's understandable that you're hurt, but equally I don't think he's unreasonable to want to go away - maybe he assumes you'll want to be with your family?

Annie890 · 22/09/2026 14:57

i think the fact he asked rather than just booking it and going shows he is kind hearted. And that it seems like he didn’t kick up a fuss when you said you’d rather him stay.
sometimes when people are grieving, the other partner doesn’t quite know how they’re feeling so I think he was testing the water

rubyslippers · 22/09/2026 14:57

Honestly it’s complicated I think
what will he do if he stays at home
do you have young kids
is there practical funeral planning stuff to do?
are you functioning etc or do you need him as you’re not coping
That changes it I think
my instinct was he should be at home with you

anpparent · 22/09/2026 14:56

I think you need to be kind to yourself, and if possible to him too. Amateur psychology, but your feelings of resentment towards him seem likely to be nothing to do with his behaviour at all. Of course you are grieving, but he can't fix that, and it doesn't seem unreasonable of him to want to go away, to me.

Savvysix1984 · 22/09/2026 14:55

Depends really. Everyones different. I’d probably be happy with my dh going away as I’d like time to myself or would spend it with family members.
if I had young dc that needed looking after then I think I’d be annoyed that ge asked.

ForTooLong · 22/09/2026 14:52

Do you have children with him that require looking after?
