AIBU to think this is an awful article?! It’s not the healthiest meal but trying to launch a campaign to stop the tradition is a bit insane!

I think it’s not always the most practical of meals as it’s very time consuming. And when you have little kids, or even older kids who need ferrying about, doing that with so much of your Sunday is probably a waste of time. Fine if the person cooking really enjoys doing so, but the kids don’t get much out of fancy meals so don’t do it because you think you should.

As a meal I’m sure it’s fine though!

Less exciting if you’re vegetarian (unless you take the trouble to make something like a lovely pie or wellington - but then that’s a different meal probably) but clearly that’s not everyone!

Roasties I guess but they’re the best bit!

I wouldn't say potatoes are stodgy, except maybe in mashed form. Even if they are, again, it's a plate with a lot of things on it and 'stodge' is only one part.

Whynottryagain · 22/09/2026 09:19

I love a roast and absolutely view it as healthy! We went rogue this week and had one on a Monday 😂 Which was good quality chicken, roast potatoes, homemade Yorkshire puddings, roast pumpkin, roast courgettes, broccoli and gravy made with the chicken juices. Delicious.

I don't really like most roasts in carvery places etc though, I find them dry, salty and stodgy, and agree that portions can be too big.

FrankAbagnalesLies · 22/09/2026 09:15

Life is too short to engage with rage bait.

ToffeePennie · 22/09/2026 09:08

I mean, it’s not the easiest meal to cook, not the easiest meal to buy, not the cheapest meal to make and not the healthiest meal out there. But I still attempt one every so often. Not on a Sunday though as we have WAY too much going on. It’s most often a Saturday.

Sartre · 22/09/2026 09:08

AlwaysExtraHot · 22/09/2026 09:06

I don't get all the talk about 'stodge'.
Yorkshire puddings, yes, but they're only a part of it (and not always).
What's 'stodgy' about freshly cooked meat or fish (yes, I count fish as suitable for a roast, sue me) and a range of fresh vegetables?

Does it even matter how unhealthy it is? If you’re only eating it once a week or less it really doesn’t and frankly, anyone eating it more than once a week has a lot of time on their hands. I always find it takes a good 3 hours to pull a good roast together hence being perfect on a lazy Sunday. Anyway, it’s a great meal so this whole debacle is nonsense.

BCBird · 22/09/2026 09:05

I rarely have a Sunday roast now, but we always had a roast when I was growing up. I would happily reinstate the tradition if someone was prepared to do it for me. I won't be taking any notice of an article. I remember something in the Guardian about traditional puddings dying out. Perfect accompaniment to the delicious roast. My death row meal

Mirroredclock · 22/09/2026 09:05

I love a roast dinner. It’s normally my main meal, timing wise we eat it too late, now weather is cooler will do an afternoon roast. In summer I don’t roast as oven on gets house too warm.

Dontcallmescarface · 22/09/2026 09:01

I haven't read it but, to me, a Sunday roast isn't all that special anyway.

Dollymylove · 22/09/2026 08:59

ThatBoilsMyBagels · 22/09/2026 08:36

The only unhealthy thing about a Sunday roast is the meat, surely, unless you use tons of vegetable oil or animal fat for the potatoes. A nut roast plus loads of vegetables and some potatoes roasted in olive oil is full of nutrients!

A nut roast may be full of nutrients. Its the fact it tastes like shit that is the problem 🤣🤣

AmethystDeceiver · 22/09/2026 08:59

randomchap · 22/09/2026 08:27

I'm going to try roast beetroot on my next one. Thats a great idea

I do them in parchment with olive oil and cumin seeds. Not traditional but delicious 😋 Especially if you get a veg box and need to eat as much veg as you can with every meal!

Meadowfinch · 22/09/2026 08:51

The traditional Sunday roast was a celebratory weekly meal, when meat or sufficient food was not always readily available the rest of the week. Portion sizes were smaller. I can remember a roast chicken serving seven of us.

The article is hardly a campaign to end the tradition, just an observation that portion sizes are getting silly. Having seen the "three meats sunday roast" at a local pub, I agree.

Sereine · 22/09/2026 08:51

If the government launched a campaign to get rid of the Sunday roast, the Telegraph would go bonkers. People are right, this is just clickbait.

As for the calories, if we have a full Sunday lunch I find I can't eat an evening meal, so it all evens out.

CuriousKangaroo · 22/09/2026 08:49

It’s just click bait nonsense to make people angry and drive engagement - and thus advertising. And it’s working given you have made a post about it on another platform and you are inviting people to click on it.

Clearly a once a week roast is generally fine for health. I doubt even the author disagrees, it’s just her job to get people clicking and engaging.

I agree with pp, btw, linking to the Twitter link rather than the Telegraph link was unwise - the racist comments pop up immediately and are depressing as hell.

Westfacing · 22/09/2026 08:44

thefeelingofbeingalive · 22/09/2026 07:25

I’m not talking about the comments. I’m talking about the article.

I'm not on X so if I follow a link usually read the few comments that I can see out of interest

No matter how interesting that article is, and I love a Sunday roast, the comment about next for the oven is unbelievable, WTF!

MeowDoku · 22/09/2026 08:43

All this has done is make me fancy a roast 😂
The X comments are disgusting but it's why I don't use the platform anymore, it's a cesspit

Jc2001 · 22/09/2026 08:42

It's good to see the Telegraph focusing on the important things that are going on around the world.

Newbutoldfather · 22/09/2026 08:42

@DebbieSavage ,

‘Sunday roast is disgusting and stodgy, but then again so is pretty much all of our food. I am so glad for multiculturalism because I could not bear the thought of eating yorkshire puddings my entire life, yuck! 😣’

A well cooked Sunday roast is delicious! It is designed to be the only meal you eat that day and goes well with a morning long walk or run.

Which multicultural meals are less stodgy:

The traditional Chinese duck pancakes followed by sweet and sour pork and egg fried rice?

The good old Indian, maybe some chicken Madras, cooked in a lot of ghee, some naan bread and rice on the side.

Or maybe a Moroccan Tagine?

Traditional English food may be boring but it is actually pretty healthy. (Although without foreign influences, it would be extremely boring).

SoupSoup · 22/09/2026 08:39

I haven’t clicked on the link, but I’m always baffled by the popularity of roasts. I genuinely don’t get the appeal. They taste like stodge designed to keep you warm in cold houses, which would have made sense in the past, but doesn’t now, and as if the primary aim is to leave you feeling full, which would also have made sense in the past.

Octosmugge · 22/09/2026 08:36

A roast is healthy, a roast is my favourite, this is clickbait. gavel falls
